4 | WCTE Close-Up

This is the 50th Anniversary of PBS! In 1970, when Julia Child went on the air, who could have imagined the

media landscape we navigate today? While you can access content on multiple devices, including your computer, cell phone and on-air broadcast television, one thing that remains a constant for PBS is the quality of the content delivered with accuracy, authenticity, accountability and trust.

Our senior senator from Tennessee, Lamar Alexander, recognized the importance of PBS when he honored, from the Senate floor, documentarian Ken Burns and the gift he has given to our American public.

“Ken Burns has become America’s storyteller, a skill much more difficult than it would seem. He tackles the subjects that divide us, like the Civil War and Vietnam, and he presents them in a form that allows us to travel through those wrenching experiences gathering the information we need to form our own opinions. One could argue that Ken Burns is our most effective teacher of United States history, a subject woefully under-taught in our schools. The lowest scores on high school advanced placement tests are not in math and science. So I’m glad to know that there’s more of Ken Burns’ work to come…. producing these films must cost a lot of money, but in my view every penny the public broadcasting system and private contributors have spent has been worth it.”

Partnerships make a big difference for both PBS and for WCTE.

Thanks to many funders, PBS Learning Media (available for all teachers, parents and caregivers for free) now has the Ken Burns

Classroom, which includes lesson plans and content specific for students 6th through 12th grade for all of Ken’s documentaries and those to come. What a wonderful gift!

WCTE has many strategic community partners who broaden the reach and impact of our work. They are in content creation, education, public safety, government, media, small

business, corporations and foundations. They sponsor programs, provide services and serve us, the citizens of the Upper Cumberland, and beyond.

You will notice their names on the air, on our website and in this magazine. Please thank them. They, along with our members, provide unduplicated service in education, public safety, civic leadership and amazing content. We could not exist without them, and the thought of that is unacceptable. We need PBS!

The WCTE staff are often recognized nationally and because of that, we recently received special guests from the PBS Foundation and a supporting agency (check out Brian Reddington’s article on page 5) to experience the importance of public media first hand in a rural region. One consistent thread in our beautiful WCTE tapestry that came to light in this visit was the amazing collaborative partnerships we have.

So a special Happy New Year to our strategic partners, as well as to our sponsors, members and viewers. Our winning edge is you!

With a Grateful Heart, Becky

A lawyer with more than ten years’ experience as a litiga-tor at two of the country’s premier law firms, Marie Ben-edict found her calling unearthing the hidden historical stories of women.

Her mission is to excavate from the past the most im-portant, complex and fascinating women of history and bring them into the light of present-day where we can finally perceive the breadth of their contributions as well as the insights they bring to modern day issues.

In Janaury, look for her new book, Lady Clementine.

FEBRUARY GUEST

))

I recently had the pleasure of visit-ing Cookeville – for the first time. The visit allowed me, as well as my

traveling companion, Mary, a program officer with a major private foundation and one of our funders, to gain some insight into the workings of WCTE and, by extension, rural America.

Mary and I wanted to see the ways in which a small, rural PBS member station, WCTE, functions amidst a rapid-ly changing media environment and, in some measure, an America seemingly divided by a deep urban/rural chasm.

During our visit, we saw PBS tools and resources at work in a lively fourth grade classroom; had a thoroughly engaging conversation with some members of the local university’s leadership team; dropped by Ralph’s Donuts, where Mary, Becky Magura and I were quickly and enthusiastically absorbed into the locals’ conversa-tion and deluged with delicious and decadent donuts; observed the workings of the station’s Community Advisory Board, all followed by a lovely and engaging dinner with members of WCTE’s board. The next day, over breakfast and lunch with another set of board members and community partners and myriad sidebar conversations, Mary and I gained more insight into the impact the station is making.

We found WCTE to be vibrant – an organization deeply immersed in and of the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee – and responsive to it. Under the leadership of Becky Magura, WCTE has been a vital com-munity resource – as a magnet, a convener, a mirror, a force for good. Community and customer service are the DNA of Becky, her entire team and organization’s board members. They care, and it shows.

I think what most impressed Mary and me is the impact WCTE continues to make in the Upper Cumberland, and it is able to do so in large measure by the important alliances and partnerships it’s been able to forge to make and extend that impact. It is impressive and inspiring.

We were also impressed by and felt the community spirit and sense of pride, and wanting us “big city” folk to have some window into the ex-perience these warm and wonderful people live out every day. WCTE and PBS member stations all across the U.S. find themselves tightly woven into the fabric of their communities, making a difference each and every day. Perhaps through more storytelling and understanding, that urban/rural chasm can become a little less prevalent.

WCTE’s October Haunted Half Marathon is ideal!  Fall races have the benefit of training during usually better weather than Spring races.  The course is well marked and controlled, the course elevation is moderate, the number of participants is 300-500, making it very manageable with easy parking and access race morning.  Best of all, it is right here in your own neighborhood, so you have the support of family and friends.

For those already running regularly, 3 months is recommended to prepare for half marathon distance. For those new to running, a base of 6 months of running and building endurance is best.   Good training programs for all levels can be found at wcte.org/haunted-half.

The New Year is a great time to set a new challenge for yourself, like running WCTE’s Haunted Half Marathon?!

In Always in Season, descendants of the victims and perpetrators of lynching are working together to heal a violent history. Blending observational foot-age with first-person testimonies and expert input, the film examines the lingering impact of lynching and the link between this historic form of racial terrorism and the racial violence that exists today.

ZOOMING IN FOR A CLOSE-UP

Jan/Feb 2020 | 11

*subject to change

TUES, JAN 7 - 10pm

Dave Chappelle is an internationally recognized stand-up comedian and actor whose trademark wit and sharp, irreverent social commentary explores race, popular culture, sex, drugs, politics, and fame. Arguably the most-touring comic on the circuit, Chappelle has performed more than 1,600 concerts worldwide in the past four years, selling out shows within minutes of their announcements.

Chappelle could always make people laugh. As a 14-year-old student at Washington, D.C.’s Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Chappelle crafted his stand-up comedy act out of the realities of his life growing up black in the nation’s capitol. He was the mastermind behind the 2003 sketch comedy hit, The Chappelle Show—one of the high-est rated programs on Comedy Central.

Before receiving the Mark Twain award, the multiple Emmy Award® winner told NPR that stand-up is his “favorite mode of expression” and that he calls it “an American phenomenon.”

“It’s the best part of the First Amendment to me that I’m able to express myself this way and make a viable living doing it,” he said. “And it’s not necessarily an easy living but it’s worth everything that I’ve been through — especially to get a night like tonight, and have people just recognize it’s not an easy thing to do. And it’s humbling to get an award.”

10 Episodes Premieres WED JAN 15 - 9pm

“In Expedition With Steve Backshall, the audience is given a glimpse into some of the incredible parts of the world that have yet to be explored. The world is full of surprising discoveries and journeys to be made, and we hope to spark viewers’ curiosi-ty and ignite their spirit of adventure.

The series follows adventurer Steve Backshall, his team of world-class experts and his film crew, as they venture into undiscovered worlds. To be suc-cessful, Steve and his adventurist experts – includ-ing cave divers, kayakers and mountaineers – have to rely on each other and the power of extraordi-nary teamwork.

The first episode sees Steve check out the Desert Canyon in Oman. From free-diving in underground river systems and descending deep into the caves of the Maya underworld, to kayaking Himalayan whitewater and scaling unclimbed Arctic peaks, these expeditions push Backshall and his expert crew to the limit.

“There are still countless expeditions to be con-quered and world discoveries to be made, and I am honored to have had the ability to be among the first to set foot in these incredible places,” said the intrepid host. “It is thrilling to not know what you will find next. That’s what exploration is all about.”

ZOOMING IN FOR A CLOSE-UP

TWO HOUR SPECIALWED, FEB 5 - 7pm

Hosted by renowned paleontologist Kirk Johnson, the film takes viewers on a dramatic and surprising adven-ture from pole to pole and back in time—650 million years ago to present day—to uncover the extraordinary story of the Earth’s poles and their changing climates.

Of all the fresh water that exists on Earth today, 70% of it is frozen, held in glaciers and ice caps, most of it in the Arctic and Antarctic—but Earth wasn’t always like this. Hidden in the rocks and trapped under the ice are clues that reveal a planet totally different from the one we know today. Following a trail of strange fossils found in all the wrong places—beech trees in Antarctica, alligators in the Arctic—Johnson finds evidence that the Arctic was once covered in a subtropical forest and dinosaurs once lived near the South Pole. A journey to the hot Death Valley desert uncovers rocks that could only get there by glacier, revealing another very differ-ent age, when ice sheets extended from pole to pole, turning the entire globe into a giant “snowball” Earth.

Featuring stunning footage from some of the most remote locations on the planet, combined with rich, 3D graphics of long-lost landscapes, Polar Extremes immerses viewers in a scientific quest to explore the unexpected secrets of our planet’s polar past. Why were the North and South Poles virtually ice free for much of the last billion years? Which triggers turned a balmy “Hothouse” Earth—home to dinosaurs for more than 150 million years—into a frozen “Icehouse” landscape? What drives the poles to such extremes? And, can the stories of the past reveal what will happen to the poles—and the rest of our planet—in the future?

ZOOMING IN FOR A CLOSE-UP

TUES, FEB 25 - 8pm

Miles Davis. The quintessential “Renaissance Man” known for his restless artistic aesthetic, is widely regarded as one of the most innova-tive, influential and highly respected figures in music. He changed the course of music five or six times, remains a fashion and cultural icon, and his globally recognized artwork continues to resonate with multiple generations.  He was an extraordinary artist who sacrificed everything for his music –the man with a sound so beautiful it could break your heart.

In this documentary, award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson delves deep into the world of a beloved musical giant.

With full access to the Miles Davis Estate, the film will feature never-before-seen footage, including studio outtakes from his recording sessions, rare photos and new interviews.  Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, Wayne Shorter and Ron Car-ter are just a few of the luminaries weighing in on the life and career of a true visionary, an innova-tor and originator who defies categorization and commands respect.

“Miles was a man apart – in life, in love, in music – a singular artist who never looked back and who changed everything we thought we knew about jazz, about music, about life, several times over in his career. With this film, I hope to unpack the mythology that surrounds Mr. Davis and present a definitive account of the man behind the leg-end,” said Stanley Nelson.

PREMIERES SUNDAY, JANUARY 12 at 8pm

Jane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817,

when she turned her thoughts to a happier subject. She started work on a witty and delightful novel set in a sea-side town. She never finished it. Now, noted screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Les Misérables, Primetime Emmy® winner for Little Dorrit) picks up Austen’s plot and takes it in a glorious and satisfying direction, on Sanditon.

Playing the head of the Parker family, Kris Marshall stars as Tom Parker, an enthusiastic and happily married man with a vision of putting Sanditon on the map. Full of energy and charm, Tom’s a risk-taker although his un-bending belief in his venture could see his obsession land him in trouble.

Tom Parker is obsessed with turning the sleepy seaside village of Sanditon into a fashionable health resort, and he enlists the backing of local bigwig Lady Denham. Through a mishap, Tom makes the acquaintance of the Heywoods and invites their eldest daughter, Charlotte, for an extended stay at Sanditon.

Rose Williams stars as Charlotte. Excited by the promise of adventure that Sanditon offers, Charlotte is a young woman of enormous energy who builds a reputation as an integral part of the new town. Open and optimistic in spirit, she’s excited by the changes the nineteenth century promises and she’s ready for a new life; she’s a truly modern Austen heroine. Confident in her opinions but unfamiliar with the rules of high society, Charlotte’s self-assurance is knocked when she meets Sidney.

Will Sanditon give her somewhere, and someone, to love?

At Sanditon, the sensible Charlotte observes hypochondria, avarice and attempted seduction run amok. Lady Denham, a widow, is playing match-maker for her destitute nephew, Sir Edward, who is determined to se-duce Lady Denham’s ward, Clara. The arrival of wealthy, mixed-race heiress Miss Lambe, under the protection of Tom’s upright brother Sidney, adds an interesting complication. Eligible men naturally find Miss Lambe fascinating, while Charlotte is intrigued by Sidney.

Theo James plays Sidney, a man never the same from one moment to the next. Unpredictable, roguish and restless — seemingly never settling

in one place for very long — self-made man Sidney finds his responsibilities to his family in Sanditon somewhat tiresome. And yet his cynicism masks a sensitive soul wounded by a broken heart that has never fully healed. In the company of Charlotte, Sidney must rediscover who he is and crucially, learn to trust again.

With many promising loose ends and romantic possibilities, how will the young people pair off? Who will Lady Denham designate as her heir? Will Tom’s tourist spa finally catch on with the public? Where will that lead? Andrew Davies imaginatively enters this world of Georgian-era suitors, hustlers, and health cranks and boldly tells us what happens next.

Remarkably, even as Jane Austen was succumbing to the ravag-es of her fatal illness, she chose to lampoon the contemporary fad for tonics, sea water cures, and other medical remedies. Undiagnosed at the time, her malady was probably Addison’s disease, which today is easily treatable. Jane Austen died at age 41, on July 18, 1817.
