A Message from Greg GicziPresident and GM, WNIT Public Television
Hello WNIT Viewers!
Happy 2020! Let’s make it a great year for everyone. My resolution comes from a cue from Mr. Rogers. I plan to be kinder to people. Our WNIT staff should be happy about that!
Thank you to the many of you who responded with a gift during our December membership drive, end-of-year gift request, or Giving Tuesday. Perhaps you did all three! We’re community owned and community supported. The extra boost really helps. January and February tend to be lean months for us.
I hope you enjoyed all of our holiday programming in December. We don’t intend to let up on providing you top-notch programming on all three of the WNIT program services, channels 34.1, 34.2, and 34.3. We know you will likely be watching more WNIT during our winter weather.
We start out Wednesday, January 1st, with Great Performances from Vienna New Year’s Celebration. It’s at 9pm on channel 34.1, just about the time you get burned out on football games.
Our first Legends of Michiana documentary of the New Year will premiere on Thursday, January 30th at 8pm. We’ll tell the story of a local couple committed to education, Virginia and Richmond Calvin. Ken Burns: Country Music will be back in a weekly format. Each Friday, during January and February at 9pm, should be “appointment television,” on 34.1.
Our channel 34.2 is our “plus” channel for PBS programming. Love the cartoon “Garfield” the cat? We will be featuring a documentary about his creator, Jim Davis, produced by Muncie PBS, WIPB. Celebrating Black History Month, our 34.2 channel programming will be rich with additional programs about the African-American experience in addition to those carried on our main channel.
South Bend Civic Theatre is beginning a 10 year series of plays written by August Wilson. SBCT will produce one play per year, beginning February 22nd. To “set the stage,” so to speak, WNIT on both 34.1 and 34.2 will air American Masters: August Wilson – the Ground on Which I Stand. The program was brought out of retirement and had to be specially licensed. Watch this documentary, go to the play!
Our 24/7 PBS Kids Channel on channel 34.3 is doing great! Sit down with your kids to watch an episode of one of our new series, Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum. Its creator is one of my favorite novelists.
I have notes about so many more new and worthwhile programs coming up on WNIT channels 34.1, 34.2, and 34.3. Explore your WNIT Planner and pick your favorites.
Thank you for your viewership and support. They are both important to us!
Best wishes,

August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning work celebrates the stories of the working-class; his plays make our common struggles both epic and heroic. Our commitment, with THE AUGUST WILSON PROJECT, is to produce all ten of of the “AMERICAN CENTURY CYCLE” plays over the next ten years. These stories of the African-American expe-rience aligns perfectly with the mission of the CIVIC.

The Legends of Michiana documentary series focuses on the people and organizations that have been influential to the growth and development of the Michiana area. In the newest installment in the series, WNIT will take you inside the life of a couple, Drs. Virginia and Richmond Calvin, whose lives have been synonymous with education in the South Bend region.
Dr. Virginia Calvin served as Superintendent of the South Bend Community School Corporation for 7 years and Chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College – North Central for 10 years. Dr. Richmond Calvin had a 30- year
career as a teacher and administrator at IU South Bend. Each have served in numerous board and advisory positions, all aimed at strengthening our community and many focused on improving our educational system.
Calvin stated about education, “We know through research that education is the one link that changes lives. It has a greater impact on how we behave as citizens, an impact on healthcare, and how we take care of ourselves.”
Giving back is not something Virginia & Richmond Calvin simply do……it’s a way of life. When asked why giving back is so important to
them, Richmond recalls that a professor who mentored him and Virginia in graduate school told them, “Don’t worry about what I’ve done. I’m glad you thanked me, but now you go out and help someone yourself.”
Join WNIT Public Television on Thursday, January 30 at 9pm on Ch. 34.1 as we bring you the remarkable story of a Michiana couple who are “Legends” to so many area individuals they have served and impacted over the years. Encore presentations will be Sunday, February 2 at 6pm and Thursday, February 6 at 10pm on 34.1, as well as, Wednesday, February 12 at 10pm on 34.2.

LEGENDS OF MICHIANA: Richmond and Virginia Calvin
WNIT to Partner With South Bend Civic Theatre on “The August Wilson Project!”
August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning work celebrates the stories of the working-class; his plays make our common struggles both epic and heroic. Beginning February 2020 and continuing through 2029, South Bend Civic Theatre will produce all ten of the “AMERICAN CENTURY CYCLE” plays over the next ten years as part of THE AUGUST WILSON PROJECT.
Wilson’s crowning achievement is the ‘American Century Cycle,’ his series of ten plays that charts the African-American experience throughout the 20th century. Radio Golf was quoted as saying, “With these 10 plays, Wilson explores a century’s worth of African-American struggle and triumph, beginning with the complex narrative of freedom at the turn of the century.”
This dual-focus educational and performance series aims to enrich and create community through the examination of the past through our modern lens. With the cycle’s commitment to the city of Pittsburgh, SB Civic Theatre believes the South Bend community will feel a resonance with these post-manufacturing “Rust Belt” stories.
As a partner of the series, WNIT will air the PBS documentary on August Wilson, “American Masters: August Wilson – The Ground on Which I Stand,” Monday, February 3 at 9pm & Saturday, February 8 at 11pm on Ch. 34.1, and Wednesday, February 5 at 10pm on 34.2.

WNIT would like to recognize the following Honor Roll Members for their loyal support!
Honor Roll Members
WNIT is honored to turn its spotlight on Rebecca Stoltzfus and Kevin Miller. Rebecca and Kevin recently moved back to the area, are new Directors’ Circle members and Rebecca recently joined WNIT’s board of directors. They strongly believe in independent media that aims to seek the truth and looks to gain many perspectives. Rebecca and Kevin can be found watching PBS News Hour, Washington Week, and our local documentaries.
Life has come full circle for this couple. They met at Goshen College while getting their undergraduate degrees and they returned in 2017 for Rebecca to take on the role of President. Rebecca was vice provost for undergraduate education and professor of human nutrition at Cornell University before returning to lead her alma mater. Before joining Cornell, she found her passion in human nutrition and taught at John Hopkins. Kevin has worked as a nurse, a public health practitioner, a community health researcher and a church administrator. They have two children, one who is a graduate of Goshen College and one who has one year left.
Rebecca (Becky) enjoys gardening, walking and cooking. Kevin enjoys all sorts of projects, hiking mountains (he grew up in Colorado) and eating Becky's food. They both enjoy music--both making it and listening to it.
SupporterSpotlight Rebecca Stoltzfus and Kevin Miller
Directors’CircleThe WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
