PEGGY IN PECKHAM On Friday 13 November, the deputy head boy
and deputy head girl, together with Year 7
students Jennifer Scourfield and Grace
Raphael, accompanied Ms French,
Mrs Hodgkin and, driving the mini bus Mrs
Hale, to deliver our harvest festival packages
to Peggy in
Peckham.
We started the day
organising the
donated tins and
packets of food into
boxes, which we
then loaded onto the
minibus. Grace won
the competition for
finding the tin with
the longest best before date (September 2020
no less!) and so our journey began.
No thanks to the satnav, we eventually found
our way to Peckham where we were met with
a lovely welcome from the famous Peggy and
her friend Lily. Our donations filled the
shelves almost to breaking point, and it was
nice to see the difference we made. Lily’s
granddaughter had made us the most amazing
fruitcake and we ate far too much!
Meeting Peggy, aged 104 years, was a
pleasure and we thoroughly enjoyed hearing
her stories. We were surprised to learn that she
had taken no less than three buses to get to us
that day all on her own! She was a real
inspiration and I think we all agreed that we
would love to have her
passion for life if we
ever reached 104.
We said a fond farewell
to the ladies of
Peckham, and due to
heavy London traffic,
we had to embark on the
long journey home.
Several sing-a-longs
later and beautiful
renditions of Frozen songs from the both of us,
we arrived back at school.
It was lovely to meet the woman we’d heard
so much about as we progressed through
school and it was nice to see where all our
donations ended up.

ANTI-BULLYING WEEK The tagline of this year’s
national Anti-Bullying
Week is to “Make a Noise!”. We, as a school,
are making sure that every student feels
comfortable with sharing their feelings or
experiences with someone who is ready to
listen.
A dramatic, light-hearted assembly from
Year 12s (led by Mrs Sims, Beth Edwards,
James Glen and Amy Bowen) last Wednesday
illustrated that bullying comes in many forms,
and can be taken in many ways; many thanks
to Cleona Freemantle, Henry Hutchins, Kane
Dodd, and Gabriel Foley. At the end of the
day, we aim to convey the message that there
is always a trusted teacher, friend, or House
Head willing to make sure every student is
content during their time at St Bart’s.
Despite this week having a particular national
focus on anti-bullying, we don’t bind the
practices to just a week; we feel that its ethos
should be echoed throughout our St Bart’s
community, throughout the academic year.
Our school policy reminds us that bullying is
never tolerated in any form, whether that be
online, at home, or within school, socially,
physically or verbally.
A poem read and written by Megan Easton
concluded the assembly, making the whole
school reflect on the very raw and real reality
of bullying. “Making a noise” doesn’t have to
come from the person being bullied; we are
encouraging every St Bart’s student to take
responsibility, and actively take a stand against
any form of bullying they experience or
witness.
50% of young people reported in the 2015
Annual Bullying Survey said that they had
been bullied at some point in their lives. Here
at St Bart’s, we aim to ensure that all students
feel entitled to learn in a safe, inspiring and
happy environment. The first step is to just
“Make a Noise!”
By Amy Bowen, James Glen and Bethany
Edwards, Year 12.
Bullying isn’t necessary! I’m back in a corner all alone,
Curled up in a ball, feeling like stone.
Being kicked and pushed, wanting to hide,
Even though I know I can’t inside.
They think it’s right, but I don’t agree,
Oh I wish they didn’t bully me.
Trying to find out my past,
I hope this bully is the last.
Horrible words being aimed at me,
Oh I wish I wish I could be free.
All these words making me feel down,
I feel like I’m wearing a broken crown.
I feel like I’m being towered over by a bear,
There isn’t a happy feeling in the air.
I feel like I want to run,
Because I feel like I’m going to be shot by
a gun.
My heart is beating really fast,
Why do they want to know my past?
A cold feeling, chilling me to the bone,
I’m backed in a corner all alone.
Megan Easton, 9D1

GIRLS’ PE Netball Results and Players of the
Match v Trinity
Y7A won 18-5 Maddy Ettridge
Y7B won 12-1 Ella McCarthy
Y8 won 16-2 Daisy Dijksman
Y9 won 15-8 Sophie Stancombe
Netball v Park House
Year 8 and 9 had league matches.
Year 8 won 24-6 and Daisy Dijksman was
awarded player of the match
Year 9 lost 11-2 and Emma James was
awarded player of the match
Year 10 played a friendly match and won
24-10
Y9 v Park House
The girls knew Park House would be a tough
match as we have always been evenly matched
in the past. The team worked hard to move the
ball to attack but some good defending and
very fast attacking players from PH saw them
take an early lead. Unfortunately Ellen Grace
(GA) fell in the second quarter and injured her
ankle which left the team unsettled and down
to six players. Team spirit didn’t fail and the
six battled hard to deny P.H. Kindly Melissa
Congerton from Year 8 stepped up as GS, the
shooters moved the ball nicely within the
circle with help from Ottilie Sanderson and
Emma James. Despite some good interceptions
by Emily Mayo and Izzy Sutton we were
beaten 11-3. We have moved away from the
match with some positives and things to work
on to improve for our next two matches.
Player of the match was awarded to Emma
James (C). Sophie Stancombe
Y7B v Trinity
On Tuesday 17 November, two teams from
St Bart’s went up against two from Trinity in
the Berkshire league. It was a game with
halves of 10 minutes each.
St Bart’s got off to a cracking start winning the
first quarter with them only having one goal.
We had an amazing attacking side of the team
with the defence taking the ball off of them at
every opportunity, meaning that they only had
the chance to score right at the start. Overall
we all played amazingly and have kept up our
winning streak by winning 11-1.
I would like to say a massive thanks to Louise
Gubbings, Sophie Cunningham, Jennifer
Scourfield, Zoe Quarterly, Rebecca Harris,
Ella McCarthy, Nina Faithful, Olivia Spatharis
and Aimee Robinson for being an amazing
team so far. Keep it up.
A special well done to Ella McCarthy for
being player of the match.

Y7A v Trinity
The netball season is coming to an end with
only two more netball matches. It was the
Year 7’s first match away from home at the
Trinity netball courts. There was a slightly
different format with two halves each
containing ten minutes. The girls started well
with shot after shot going into the net and the
defenders were intercepting all the Trinity’s
passes. The midfielders were aware of the
spacing and used the netball court wisely to
receive strong, accurate passes. At the half
way point St Bart’s were winning 9:2, there
was a little change to the team with Erin Rees
coming on at WD and Lottie Day moving to
WA. Once the new positions had been sorted
the umpires whistle blew and the game had
begun! The attackers were great at running in
to receive the centre pass and the shooters
were on fire scoring goal after goal or catching
the rebounds. The defenders were great at
blocking the shots and bringing the ball back
down the courts were the WA or C could do a
great feed into the shooting D for the shooters
to score even more goals. After a fast game
St Bart’s won 18:5.
A huge well done to GK Neve Scarr, GD
Imogen Pemberton, WD Lottie Day, C Luci
Robertson, WA Bianca Vicaria, GA Maddy
Ettridge, GS Maisie Lainsbury and Erin Rees.
A massive congratulations to Maddy Ettridge
who got playeY7B

Year 7
Year 8
On Tuesday 17 November the Year 8 girls
played a league netball fixture against Trinity,
away at Trinity. Although it was a cold, damp
and windy day the girls still played well and
kept going. It started off being a struggle, both
for St Bart’s and the Trinity girls, as where
they were placing the ball was difficult to
predict due to the horrendous weather. The
game set off as being evenly matched with a
narrow score, half time St Bart’s had the lead
at 5-2. In the second half the St Bart’s girls
dominated in all areas of the court, each player
found space, progressing the game well,
demonstrating great agility throughout.
The final score was a solid win at 16-2 to
St Bart’s. Player of the match was awarded to
Daisy Dijksman.
Daisy Dijksman 8C3
Year 9 Netball v Trinity 17 November 2015
It was a great game!
Due to sustained injuries we had a different
team structure that we were slightly
apprehensive about however the team worked
very well in their new positions. All players
worked excellently together only conceding
three goals in the first half and scoring seven.
The defenders did well trying new tactics of
marking which supported some great turn
overs by interceptions from Emily Mayo and
Izzy Sutton. The attackers gave some really
lovely balls ahead of player to ensure that they
had time to run onto it, this created a great
flow throughout the game. Interceptions,
flowing passing down court and some great
shooting secured a win for St Bart’s 15-8.
Congratulations to the team: Alice Lansley
(GS), Sophie Stancombe (GA), Ottilie
Sanderson (WA), Emma James (C), Sienna
Edwards (WD), Emily Mayo (GD) and Izzy
Sutton (GK). Player of the match was awarded
to Sophie Stancombe.

TO ENJOY LIFE MORE
Time to Talk is offering mindfulness training to young people in West Berkshire. The
courses will be run by a qualified and experienced coach; Davina Nicholson.
ANYONE CAN LEARN AND PRACTISE MINDFULNESS, IT’S SIMPLE, YOU CAN
PRACTICE IT ANYWHERE AND THE RESULTS CAN BE LIFE-CHANGING.
MINDFULNESS IS RECOMMENDED BY NICE (National Institute for Care
Excellence)
The course will be on Tuesdays from 5pm to 6.30pm
At Broadway House in Newbury, Starting on December 8th
(Full list of dates:- 8th, 15th & 22nd December,
5th, 12th, 19th & 26th January & 2nd February)
WHAT IS MINDFULNESS:- By focussing on your breath in a particular way
mindfulness helps you to become more ‘in’ the present moment. Using our breath in
this way means we can always have a safe internal ‘place’ to go to. We can also focus
our attention mindfully on other things both inside and outside ourselves.
THIS COURSE INCLUDES SESSIONS ON:- Intention, attention, attitude, gratitude,
resilience, kindness to self and others and purpose. Each session has some learning
about how our brain works, some movement and some mindfulness practice, as well as
sharing, stories, videos and FUN!
WHAT IS MINDFULNESS CONTINUED:-
Often in everyday life we are caught in our thoughts and not awake to the present and
our thoughts can be negative and frightening and can cause anxiety or other
uncomfortable feelings, by practicing mindfulness we can learn to calm our mind and
release tension in our body.
Mindfulness has developed over 2,500 years, originally from Buddhist
meditative traditions
Mindfulness brings a moment by moment non-judgemental awareness of
the breath, body sensations and other happenings within us as human
beings
Mindfulness helps to connect mind and body
Mindfulness feels good Would you like to know more?
