BLARNEY  2­6  CLOUGHDUV  0­7 

The Blarney Under 13 hurlers defeated Cloughduv to win the Mid­Cork Final on  Tuesday,  the  23 rd of  August.  Although Cloughduv  opened  the  scoring, Blarney were soon in their stride with points from Christopher Nagle, Owen O’ Connor (free), Darren Dineen and a peach of a goal from Shane Jordan. Cloughduv  did  reply  with  two  points  but  Blarney  continued  to  pile  on  the pressure  and  were  rewarded  with  a  Kevin  McNamara  goal  to  leave  the score at the interval 2­3 to 0­5 in Blarney’s favour. Blarney had the first point of the second half with an Owen O’ Connor free. Cloughduv  did  take  the  fight  to  their  opponents  but  a  defiant  Blarney defence  kept  them  at  bay.  Paul  Hallissey  in  goal  made  two  fine  saves denying Cloughduv a much­needed goal. Captain fantastic Barry Phelan at centre­back  led by example and was ably assisted by Michael O’ Sullivan, Tommy Looney and Kevin Hyland. Two great points from Barry Phelan and Diarmuid Casey ended the game as a contest.

BLARNEY  2­8  DRIPSEY  2­7 

The Blarney Junior A hurlers defeated Dripsey in the third round of the Championship at Coachford on Saturday, the 7 th of August.    Blarney  started  brightly when Sean Harrington  pointed  a  free  and Eamonn Kennedy  doubled  on  a  long delivery to put Blarney two points in front within a minute.  However, almost immediately Blarney conceded a soft goal but equalised through a Sean Harrington free after six minutes.  The Blarney defence was again breached in the 12 th minute when Dripsey scored their second goal.  Nevertheless, Blarney slowly clawed their way back into the game with points from Peter Ahern and a long distance free from Sean Harrington.  Then, in the 21 st minute, Blarney regained the lead when Brian Deasy smartly fired a ground stroke  to  the net.   Dripsey did score a point before  the break  to  leave Blarney leading by 1­5 to 2­1. Dripsey flew out of  the blocks in the second half and notched up  three points from play.  It  took Blarney until the 12 th minute to register  their first score of the half when Eoin Hallahan picked up a loose ball and fired over.   Blarney now came more into the game and Peter Ahern scored a great point from distance to level matters.  Then in the 20 th minute the game turned  in Blarney’s  favour when Sean Harrington’s  long  free went all  the way  to  the Dripsey net.   Eamonn Kennedy added another point from play and Blarney looked home and dry.  Dripsey now threw everything at the Blarney defence and scored three unanswered points.  But try as they might they couldn’t get the all important equalising score and Blarney held on for a very satisfying victory. Best for Blarney: Sean Walsh, Kevin Downey, Michael Horgan.

BLARNEY  1­13  BALLINORA  0­14 

The Blarney Junior A hurlers met Ballinora for the third time this season in the semi­final of the Mid­Cork Championship at Ballincollig on Friday evening, the 26 th of August.  After five minutes, it appeared that Ballinora would run away with this contest having raced into a four point lead.  Although, Sean Harrington registered Blarney’s first score with a free in the  7 th minute,  Ballinora  continued  to  dictate  and  lead  by  0­6  to  0­1  after  ten minutes.   However,  Blarney’s  fortunes improved when Eamonn Kennedy was fouled in the square and Eoin Hallahan rifled the resultant penalty to the net.  For the remainder of the half, both teams battled valiantly and exchanged four points a piece with three of Blarney’s points coming  from the unerring  free­taking of Sean Harrington and  the  fourth, a well­taken point  from play by Peter Ahern leaving the score at the interval 1­5 to 0­10 in favour of Ballinora. 

Blarney began  the second half much better  than  the  first but  failed  to convert a number of opportunities, particularly when Eoin Hallahan’s bullet­like ground stroke was saved by the Ballinora goalkeeper.  In the 10 th minute, Peter Nodwell scored a  fine  individual point  from  the  right wing and Peter Ahern added another point  four minutes  later.   However, Blarney were  finding  it difficult to draw  level as Ballinora continued to add  to  their tally.   Then, in  the 17 th minute, the game exploded into life from a Blarney point of view with points from Sean Harrington (free) and David O’ Callaghan, who was to make his presence felt after being moved into full­forward.  Blarney continued to turn the screw and added two  further  points  from Eoin Hallahan  and Peter Ahern  to  leave Blarney  leading  by  two.   Then,  in  the  25 th minute  a Ballinora player was sent  to  the  line for a foul on Paul O’ Leary and Sean Harrington fired over  the resultant free.   A minute later, David O’ Callaghan scored a great point from an acute angle after dispossessing the Ballinora full­back and Blarney were on their way to victory.  Ballinora did add a point in added time but the Blarney defence stood firm to book their place in the final.

To Darragh McSweeney who won a Munster Championship Under 21 Hurling Medal with Cork at full­back.   Darragh also starred in Cork’s defeat by Galway in the All­Ireland Semi­Final on Saturday, 27 th of August.

BLARNEY  0­6  CLONDROHID 0­8 

Blarney were defeated narrowly in the third round of the Mid­Cork Junior A Football Championship by Clondrohid in a fiery encounter at Coachford on Tuesday evening, the 26 th  of July. The game ended on a sour note with players from both sides receiving their marching orders. Clondrohid were quickly into their stride and by the third minute, they held a three points to nil advantage. Blarney slowly came more and more into the game but could not translate their possession into scores and had to wait until the 22 nd minute for their opening score, a pointed effort from Johnny Hurley. Indeed this was Blarney’s only point of the first half and at the interval Clondrohid led 0­5 to 0­1. In the second half, Blarney stormed into the game and soon found their shooting form with points from Johnny Hurley, a splendid Dave McCarthy effort and a pointed free from the boot of Dermot Crowley. Clondrohid kicked their first point of the second half  in  the 41 st minute but Blarney continued to attack with scores  from a Crowley free and  the equalising score from Ronan Byrne to leave both sides level on 0­6 a piece. At this stage of the game Blarney looked to have the measure of their opponents and a victory looked on the cards. However, an injury to a Clondrohid player held the game up and as both teams became restless, tempers began to flare. As the final whistle loomed Clondrohid kicked the lead score and three minutes into injury time they increased their advantage from a pointed 45. Blarney went in search of a goal but could not penetrate a determined Clondrohid rearguard. Best for Blarney: Stephen O’ Donoghue, Danny Cronin, Johnny Hurley and Dave McCarthy.

Blarney Junior A Footballers who defeated Naomh Aban but lost to Clondrohid in the Mid­Cork Championship 

BLARNEY  3­13  GLEANN NA LAOI  1­4 

The Blarney Junior B hurlers had a comprehensive victory over Gleann Na Laoi in their first outing of the Championship at Cloughduv on Saturday evening, the 13 th of August.  Blarney played into the wind in the first half but quickly got into their stride with some nice points and led at the interval by 1­05 to 0­4, the Blarney goal coming from the excellent Cian O’ Mahony.  In the second half, with the aid of the wind, Blarney upped the ante and pulled away with Mark Lee, Howard McDermott and Cian O’ Mahony scoring some delightful scores.   The score of the game came when William Meehan grabbed  a  high  delivery  and  kicked  confidently  to  the Gleann Na  Laoi  net. Stephen Forrest  then  ensured  a Blarney victory when he goaled with a great ground stroke. Best for Blarney: James Duggan, Stephen O’ Riordan, Cian O’ Mahony, Sean Twomey, Mark Lee.
