There must be a special mold from whichcome all Western Canadian artists andtheir managers. Not one have we met thathas been overbearing nor positive that theirbeing on earth was for the reason of attain-ing stardom. Barry Allen is no exception. Both he and his manager Al Johnson areperfect examples of how to succeed andstill maintain respect for others. A welcomechange from some of the overbearing pushymanagers and their equally misplacedcharges.

Barry Allen is talented as his Capitolouting "Easy Come Easy Go" will prove. It all started back in Edmonton on July

29, 1945. That's when the Allen family welcomed a newson name of Barry. But it really didn't happen until thisblonde haired western Canadian youngster reached a heightof 5'10" and weighed in at 160 lbs and just happened to begoing to high school. His singing and guitar picking madehim the boy most desirable for a date but he was too busyplaying at the dances. His next step turned out to be a bigone. THERE

Dateline The Big Pine-apple: Another BMI help-ing hand by way ofWhitey Haynes has beengiven to two new youngtalents from the Torontoarea. Derek Durelle andEd Armstrong, to beknown as Derek and Ed,wrote four tunes andwith the expert adviceWhitey, cut the sessionat RCA Victor studiosin Toronto. HaroldPounds of Sparton Rec-ords was so knockedout with "Hum Drum"

that he has arranged an immediate release. They say absence makes the heart

grow fonder. As voted by the industry,Canada's Top Male Vocalist (RPM Award)Terry Black, has been off the scene fortoo long but bangs in with an LP release"The Black Plague" that could establishthis talent back on the Top Forty roster.

The Brian Browne Trio, late of ournation's capital, have taken up residencein Toronto and will be holding forth in thePlaza Room of the Park Plaza Hotel.Their PAs will shortly get a big push withthe release of their first on RCA Victor.

Gerry Wolff, the Prez, of Wolff Rec-ords announces that RCA Victor will belooking after distribution of his releases.Dee and The Yeomen with "Say Baby" andRita Curtis' "Spring Rains" will be re -serviced to radio stations. It's of interestto note that "Say Baby" has been listed asNo. 28 on the "Tri-State Distributors HotPops" chart out of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Nice to see full page ads in the USTrades for "Shakin' All Over" by TheGuess Whos. The power of advertisingpays off, as the more progressive mindedrecord companies will attest to.

The Variety Club has moved from theold familiar Prince George Hotel to themodem Colonnade in Toronto's uptownarea. Lee Cournier a familiar face at theTowne Tavern for the past fifteen yearswill be the new host in the fifth floorquarters.

Radio stations in Canada are indeedfortunate to have a hustler like Al Allbutof Leeds Music (Canada) watching out forthe interests of Canadian artists. By spec-ial arrangement he will be sending out thenew Don Francks single "Nobody KnowsYou When You're Down And Out". Don iscurrently playing Toronto town and it wasthrough the many requests by fans thatprompted Al into this good -will promotion.RPM will shortly be doing a front pagespread on the popular Don Francks. It'salso of interest to note that Al sent outthe now much in demand hit "It's Not Un-usual" by Tom Jones on Feb. 1 and it wasmet with cool reviews. At the same timehe sent out "Baby Please Don't Go" byThem which was also not considered goodhit material. But, and again LAZY PRO-GRAMMING comes into play, now that thenod has been given to these records bythe prophets of the business

"The Greatest Story Ever Told" aUnited Artists release hit Toronto (Apr 1)to mixed reviews. One critic classified itas a "4 hour religious bore". The sound-track is excellent however and shouldprove to be a fairly good mover. Torontorecord bars report action already.

A new fan mag will shortly be makingthe Canadian scene. "The Most" put outby Robert Stone Associates will be giving2

forth with pix and bios and fan club list-ings on Canadian and international re-cording artists. This will be a bi-monthlypublication and Bob advises that he hasalready set up Canada -wide promotion forgiveaways on radio stations.

Dateline Calgary: Johnny Harlow isfast making the big impression on thisBIGLAND of ours with his Arc release of"Let's Take A Chance Tonight".

The Stampeders with their Sotan re-lease of "House Of Shake" has been mak-ing it locally. Travellers from the CABmeeting in Vancouver advise that the boyshave a good sound.

N.L. Davison, manager of the S'Quiresnotes that "Green Surf" has made theboys a very popular item in the southernAlberta area with demands for many ap-pearances in Lethbridge and Calgary.

Dateline Edmonton: Barry Allen isback home after a successful trip to theeast. Response and co-operation fromradio stations in Montreal and Ottawawere just great. But when he showed up inhogtown it was a little different story. Oneof the major complaints from DJs is thelack of personal appearances of artists atradio stations. Here was one of Canada'sgreatest up-and-coming artists availinghimself to radio stations and was all butignored. Our thanks to Bob McAdorey ofCHUM for extending the courtesy of hisstation to this western Canadian artist.RPM was indeed grateful that Barry andhis manager Al Johnson took the time todrop around and say hello.

Dateline Fort William: Ed Kukkee ofFireside Records sent along a new re-lease by Gene and The Strangers. Bothsides "My Hideout" and "Miss NewLove" have been getting good reactionat the lakehead.

Dateline The Maritimes: MaritimeRecords have released "I'm Leading AHappy Life" by Ron Goodwin and "DownEast In Old N.B." by The Henchmen. Re-ports have it that both releases havebeen well received on the eastern sea-board.

Dateline Montreal: Danco Records isestablishing a great sound from our Bi-Bicity. Carl Schmidt, the prez, has released"Bars On My Window" by Don Kirklandwith The Jordanaires along with "LittleBoy Lost" by Carl Danco and his ork.Billy Mure and his group come up with agood sound "Mon Coeur-Brise (My BrokenHeart)". Danny Villa's release of "Pieta"is also gaining ground for Danco in LaBelle Province.

From RCA Victor comes a plan notmany retailers would turn down "Buy oneDynagroove stereo album at regular priceand choose a second for only $1.00." Alsofrom Victor comes news that with successcomes security guards for the successful.J.B. and The Playboys have been havingtheir portion of "this thing called suc-cess". Every appearance they make nowrequires the assistance of the local gen-darme and hired security to keep the boysintact. They apparently made appearancesin Upper Canada and demands for theirreturn appearance at the Hawks Nest inToronto are now an everyday occurence. They will be returning but as a part ofthe Rolling Stones show.

Marty Hill drops a note that his "TheGreatest Love" on Columbia has beenchosen "Canadian Pick Hit" on CKGM.Dave Boxer has flipped this disc andfinds that "You Made Your Choice" ismuch more popular and has jumped up to

No. 30 on the "Like Young" chart.Marty's success has made him front pagematerial for the "Canadian Music News"out of Ottawa. The weekend of Apr. 10 sawMarty appearing on the John Poser TVer(CJOH-TV) and the popular teen spotThe Oak Door.

A call from Phil Najovits, GeneralManager of Allied Record Corporation, fillus in on the appointment of Dave Leonardas production co-ordinator. There aremany big plans in the offing from thishighly progressive company. With the ac-quiring of the Roulette line for Canadacomes some of the big names in the busi-ness. The Detergents with "Double -0 -Seven" and The Hullaballoos with "Be-ware" are presently making headway.Watch for Canadian Allied productions tocome from this company.

Dateline Burbank: Billed as the 18year old barefoot phenomenon from Eng-land Sandie Shaw has become the hottestfemale vocalist in the UK and is fast ap-proaching this stature on this side of thepond. Six months ago she was working anadding machine in an auto factory inDagenham England and suddenly decidedto do something entirely different. Sheliked to sing and sounded even betterwhen she was barefoot which accounts forthe success of her first rdlease of "Al-ways Something There To Remind Me"and the follow up "Girl Don't Come". Herthird release is being readied.

Dateline Ottawa: The nation's capital,no slouch when it comes to independentlypublished record surveys now sees threeof these charts combine and come out as"The Swing Set". Contributors are DougMcKeen of Canadian Music News, IanConnerty of ALCO and George Pollard ofCPMI possibly putting an end to a situ-ation that was getting out of hand. TheOttawa Journal reprints this survey, based on retail sales, in their weekly teensection.

Dave Britten, popular young manabout the teen recording set in Ottawa, isoff to Nashville for a recording date forCapitol Records.

Record Jottings: Paul White comesback from a holiday in Mexico to a fullhouse of Capitol successes. Jack Lon-don's "Our Love Has Passed" has metwith the approval of broadcasters acrossthe country. Adam Faith crashes onto thescene with "Talk About Love" which willget an additional shot in the arm via"Shindig". Also from across the pondcomes "Reelin' and Rockin' " by theDave Clark 5 already showing signif-icantly on the UK charts. The Romper orbetter known now as Bluebird Hawkinssigns in with a good follow-up "Goin' ToThe River". Getting the nod from everypossible point comes Bobby Darin's"Venice Blue". Some stations in Canadabeat the gun by somehow latching onto acopy of The Beatles "Ticket To Ride".Maybe the jet -set is made up of eagerradio station personnel willing to drop$400.00 for a quick trip to the UK to getthe drop on their competitors. The Seekers'"I'll Never Find Another You" is a chartitem on most Top Forty stations and listedon many of the GMP stations acrossCanada. Freddie & The Dreamers havebeen galloping home like winners onmany of the charts with their "I'm TellingYou Now". The new dance craze "TheFreddie" will make sure that these teenpleasers are around for quite some time.

Al Allbut of Leeds Music (Canada)

Page 3: BARRY'`* · 2019. 7. 18. · BARRY'`* * ALLEN There must be a special mold from which come all Western Canadian artists and their managers. Not one have we met that has been overbearing

sent along a copy of "Fanny Hill" byPaul Griffin with "101 Strings". This is ajazz type instrumental reminiscent of"Gravy Waltz" and could become a TopForty item with proper GMP exposure.

From London comes a new label andan equally pretty sound by The Chessmen. The Vancouver based group could easilymake the national scene with "She ComesBy Night"

From Columbia comes an actionsingle that could command the lead."Carmen" by Bruce and Terry is gettingthe token play treatment but spotty enoughto look like a winner. "Roses And Roses"an Andy Williams' offing is off and climb-ing the charts as is the Canadian entry byKenny Chandler "S.O.S." (Sweet On Sus-ie). The Scotians (formerly The Beavers)will be releasing an LP shortly. MartyRobins comes up with another ear bender"Turn The Lights Down Low". A popularcut "I'll Be Alright" is currently beingplayed like a single in Upper Canada.

"Mrs. Brown You Have A LovelyDaughter" by Herman's Hermits was animmediate smash as a single in Canadabut wasn't being considered for release inthe US other than as a cut on their newLP. Reliable sources have it that inter-ested US jocks gained an interest in thisdisc through RPM and played the cut fromthe LP which made for immediate pressureon the record company to release thesingle.

One of the many pleas-ures of reading periodi-cals etc. is the lettersto the Editor. In ourcase a great deal of im-portance is attached tothe letters we receive. It is the encouragementexpressed in a fewwords by people from allparts of Canada and theUS that makes our exis-tence as a trade paperthat much more impor-tant. The following areexamples. Mel Mac fromCKYL Peace Riverwrites "Greetings

Walt: Just thought I'd like to tip my hat toproducers of the Canadian label calledRED LEAF. In my humble opinion, theywill be THE record company in the future. These guys are on the way up. I think theproduction of each record coming from RedLeaf is unsurpassed. And if other recordcompanies (Canadian) don't pull up theirbritches, they'll be late for the races."

Allan Young, Production Manager ofCKSA Lloydminster writes "Dear Walt: I

would like to add to the letter I noticed inRPM the March 15th issue. I think CharlieBrown from 'YL has a good point and I'mglad he has the guts to bring it out so thestations could see it and now buy a sub-scription to RPM. I think it is great tohave a magazine in Canada that promotesCanadian talent and it also gives the DJ'sa chance to sound off on little things thatbother them. Like when Charlie Browntook a trip across Alberta and only foundtwo or three stations playing Canadiantalent. Now more stations are playingCanadian talent, not because of Charlie'slittle note but because one station doesn'twant another station to get ahead of themso they go all out when they find out what

the other stations are doing. AnywayCharlie you have a good point. Go get themtiger. We here at CKSA are behind RPM100%".

From Stephen Kimber of the HalifaxMirror. "Dear Walt: Re: the letter fromDavid Reynolds concerning the state ofmusic in Canada (RPM Mailbag Mar 15)I'd like to make a few observations. Noone need get alarmed over his attitudewhile controlling the radio media. Mr.Reynolds says 'since most of the Canadianstuff is of poor quality, I refuse to subjectmy listeners to it.' From what I've heardhis listeners refuse to be subjected to him. They listen to Canadian talent on otherBETTER stations."

"Dear Walt: In answer to the youngman who wrote you from CKCW, which is inMoncton, by the way, I wouldn't want any-one to get the impression all Maritime DJ'sfeel this way. CHNS and myself have, forthe past six years, an envied record inpromoting Canadian talent. I don't mindbragging about it. And it's not out of asense of so-called nationalism, it's arealization that we have some damn goodtalent in this country, and it is not re-ceiving proper exposure. It is characterssuch as this one who are dragging ourheels. I would suggest he try some Canad-ian records out on his audience. Halifaxteens have taken to Pat Hervey, BobbyCurtola, Terry Black, the Girlfriends etc.with great enthusiasm. I think either thiscat hasn't played any Canadian discs, orhis audience is such a bunch of hicks thatthey don't know a Canadian singer from anEnglish one (although I admit sometimesit gets confusing). I also suggest that if hefeels that he can't get the American prod-uct from Canadian companies quickly e-nough, he should write to Bill Gavin or anyother American service. Most large Canad-ian stations are getting American samples. We cannot hope to compete with the largeAmerican powerhouses in getting new re-leases. The Teens in Halifax are used tohearing newies shortly after their release, whether they be American or Canadian, andthey don't give a tinker's damn for Ameri-

can radio, even though we receive a totalof about twenty stations here at night. This letter of his set me off, so I'm spill-ing my head to you. If you choose to printall or part of what I have said, feel free todo so, at least I speak for most Maritimedee jays. (Signed) Frank Cameron, CHNSHalifax.

RPM... an open forumWith countless criticscombining to supressthe editorial policy ofRPM, and a "patsy"already self-appointed,we must take the timeto remind the hurt andwronged that RPM hasan equal time policy.Constantly the telephonewill ring in your editor'soffice and after "get-ting it off their chest",we may suggest thecritic drop us a line."Your viewpoint is most

important". As often as this has hap-pened. That often have we heard the lastfrom the quick to answer. Never has ananswer to an editorial been suppressed. The freedom of the press so dear to all ofus will continue to dominate RPM's openforum. Your views are appreciated.

For twenty years now the soft sell, hail fellow well met policy has achievednothing. It is the time to ask questions, and those who have nothing to hide willhave answers. Canada's music industryhas never had it so good, and if completeabandon on the part of few small minded"cry babies" for a favour or two is goingto end our progress, then go to it.

It was indeed a greathonour today to receivea letter from AndrewStewart Chairman of theBoard of Broadcast Gov-ernors. Dr. Stewart iswell aware of the situ-ation in Canada and toquote, "It has becomeevident to us at ourpublic hearings that a

considerable number ofCanadian radio stationsnow place an emphasison the playing of Cana-dian recordings in theirprograms which couldscarcely have been ex-pected two years ago. I

feel sure that in this development yourown publication of RPM,of which we havea complete file in our program records, hasmade its own substantial contribution."Dr. Stewart expressed a keen interest inour new directory of Canada's music in-dustry and added "I am sure that this willindicate our very live interest in the workyou are doing to encourage the developmentof the Canadian recording industry."

Dateline The Big Pineapple: CFTO-TV presented a special "Inside TheToronto Symphony" produced and directedby Peter Macfarlane. The magnitude ofthe show itself was stupendous and agreat tribute to both the independent net-work and the Toronto Symphony. It wasalso a crowning finale to the outstandingtenure of Walter Susskind as Director ofthe Toronto Symphony a post he has heldsince 1956. This sixty minute programwhich included an informal voice-overdescription by the maestro of his reasons

for the musical selections and explainedhow each piece is treated from rehearsalto public performance. The camera tookthe viewer from his piano to full concertperformance. Mr. Susskind also examinedthe role of the conductor, his personalinterpretations and the subsequent presen-tation of concert music. The program in-cluded Overture, "Tannhauser" by Wagner,Eleanor Calbes, Soprano with the CanadianOpera Company, performing "Mussetta'sWaltz Song" from "La Boheme" byPuccini - Slavonic Dance No. 1 byDvorak, Eleanor Calbes, "Voices OfSpring" by Strauss and Tschaikovsky'sFantasy "Romeo and Juliet". On thecountry end "Night Hawk" by Gary Buckand "Texas Leather" by Bob King are thefavorites. The Arc LP "Oh Oh Canada"by The Brothers -In -Law has been getting atremendous amount of requests for airplayand is a runaway seller in the musicstores.

Dateline Peace River: Here's somefood for thought from Mel Mac the unbreak-able jock at CKYL. Mel has a complaintthat perhaps other DJs would like aired."Record Jackets without any holes in themiddle". Thestation now changes the record jackets.Chuck Benson PD at 'YL sends along acoverage map of his station and theirsister station CKNL.
