The House that Tatay Built

With his blood, toil, sweat, and tears." Tatay was bom on May 30,1896 in Lipa, Batangas, the second child and eldest son ofFausto Dimaano and Evarista Lucero. He had his early schooling in Lipa. For college he went to Jose Rizal University, the first business school in the country established in 1919. He obtained the degree BS in Commerce in 1923. He taught in Batangas High School in the late 1920s where he met Mama who was also teaching in the provincial high school after graduating with a BS in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of the Philippines in 1924. They got married in 1931 and settled in Taal. He gave up his position in the Assessor's Office in Cebu, and engaged in the embroidery business pioneered by the Ban-ions. They had six children born one after another from 1932 to 1940. Tatay saw the need for a bigger house to accommodate his brood. He shared his house with some Benedictine Sisters who evacuated to Taal during the war years, as well as with a survivor of the Death March and friends and relatives who sought shelter during the war. Tatay sent his children to the best schools, notwithstanding the expense. There was a time when all six children were in college in Manila—Ateneo, UE, St. Scholastica's, UST and San Beda. He worked hard to afford good education and good food for his family, to the best of his ability. His children of course knew that there was not much extra money in the house and never made undue demands. He made sure that there was enough for schoolbooks and school activities, as well as for a few luxuries and parties. His children appreciated everything he provided them. He was always proud of our littlest accomplishments in school and inspired us to be the best of what we could be despite our limited resources. All he expected of us was to do well in our studies. The incentive was simple but attractive: any one busy with schoolwork was exempted from household chores. He was not bom religious but he prayed and attended church regularly with the family. He loved his relatives and his friends. He gave of himself and whatever meager resources he had that he could share with others. He served his adopted town of Taal as a municipal government employee during the administration of his brother-in-law, Fernando Barrion, Taal town mayor during the Japanese occupation. At home, he disciplined his children in his quiet way, never raising his voice; he just looked at us and we knew that he was not pleased with us. He had such high regard for Mama that during their whole life together he never spoke her name. That was sacred to him. After his youngest son had passed the bar and gotten his first job, Tatay passed away. He must have felt that he had accomplished his mission on earth. Tatay died on July 28, 1962, 32 years before Mama crossed the Great Divide. He was heard to say when he was still alive that he would prefer to go ahead of Mama, as he could not bear living without her. His death left a void in our lives. How his children wished that he had lived long enough to witness our little successes in life. We still miss his good counsel during times of personal and family crises. Tatay is gone, but he lives on in our minds and hearts. We will always remember him as a giving and kind father. We like to think that his sacrifices have paid off—we are trying hard to make sure of that. The house that Tatay built is a memorial that once upon a time lived a good man who loved his family very much.
