NOFIT STATeWe celebrate the contradictions within ourselves and our work. We create beautiful carnage and organised anarchy. We endeavour to be seriously exciting and classically fresh.

NoFit State was founded in 1986 by five friends. During a politically charged time, in a recession, and as a creative reaction to the world around them, the circus was born.

Contemporary circus combines live music, dance, stage design, text, and film with traditional circus skills. It is rooted in the travelling community who turn up, pitch a tent, drum up an audience, and then leave with only flattened grass and a memory to show they were ever here. The circus are the strangers who live amongst us – and if we run away to join them we are throwing off our inhibitions, our conventions, the rules of settled society. We are taking to the road knowing that there is no destination – only a journey.

Today, NoFit State is the UK’s leading large-scale contemporary circus company, producing professional touring productions and a wide variety of community, training and education projects for people of all ages.

Over the last five years NoFit State’s touring productions have visited 15 different countries, played to audiences of over 250,000, have been critically acclaimed and won numerous prestigious international arts awards.

In 2010, NoFit State Circus was approached by the 9 members of ZEPA (European Zone Artistic Projects) to become their UK associate company and was commissioned to develop a large-scale performance. NoFit State created Barricade, which reflects the company’s journey through this Artistic Zone and is inspired by the territories of the nine different partners.

BARRICADeSpectacular circus, spine-tingling aerial, stunning imagery, thrilling live music and theatrical chaos in celebration of the mighty human effort required to overcome our fear…

Two trucks block the town square. They disgorge their contents of wires and tyres, creating an obstacle to normal paths and daily routines.

Suddenly, the wind is rising. People are constructing defences to protect themselves from the storm. They hurry to bring tyres, ladders and other objects in impossible volumes. The barricade they build, a spectacular aerial playground, sets the scene for a maelstrom of breathtaking circus. In this powerful story of separation and unity, acrobats, aerialists and tightrope walkers explore the mighty human effort required to overcome the walls, barriers and defenses we find or place in our path.

Barricade invokes a glorious spirit of resistance to empower its people to fight for freedom. A freedom of their own fear, doubt and suspicion.
