The East Harlem triangle represents the edge of Manhattan in more ways than one – physically in its location at the north edge of the city’s gridded fabric, economically as a fast gentrifying en-vironment racing to replace its building stock to match the rest of the city and also socially as a community that prides itself with a diverse subculture. “Common Ground” addresses these issues in a cohesive urban scheme that creates a new live-work-learn lifestyle that fuses together the functions of housing and a school and with an expansive library program linking them.

The project has a clear urban edge that and a landscape tail extending towards the East Harlem river enveloping 2 existing parks with complementary public program and activating zones that are currently isolated traffic islands. The idea of urban life in “in-between” spaces is a strong theme explored at all scales. Four built fingers with in-between public zones achieve high building density while maintaining porosity. At the scale of the individual class room or housing unit, much of the life of buildings lie in their amenity spaces zoned for specific shared functions.

This project capitalizes itself as a public-private-partnership model for densifying an existing Manhattan public school block to include affordable housing plus other public amenities.

How can architecture reflect values of inclusivity, universal access and create civic pride within a community?

“Common Ground” takes on these challenges by re-envisioning the regimental Manhattan city block as a porous, mixed use building typology that truly redefines the urban ground plane as much as it does the skyline of the East Harlem Triangle. Densifying an existing public school site with additional uses - housing and other public amenities - the idea of “in-between” spaces as social collectors is strongly programmed at all scales. Art zones, collective learning spaces, community kitchens and semi-public dining create unconventional programmatic adjacencies all through “Common Ground” that allow for more affordable and rich urban life. Additionally, landscape strategies weave together a public ground plane reflecting East Harlem’s vibrant, multi-layered culture. The project’s landscape tail extends towards the East Harlem river reinvigorating 2 existing parks with complementary public program and activating zones that are currently isolated traffic islands.

This Santa Monica Awareness and Relief Center is all about point of contact that connects people with the resources of the city in the event of a disaster. Within the site, there exists facilities that educate residents and visitors about disasters as well as several outdoor terraces that can transition into a staging ground in the event of a large scale disaster. The objective of this project was to construct a site in which people can be educated about disaster preparedness and retreat for aid in the event of a disaster. The two building typologies and terraced ground relief area are linked by both the landscape and the metro station. These three nodes can operate both independently and dependently during a disaster.
