Editor:

I’m Dennis and as an agent for the Works I have been distributing the Works local to your homes for many years, so it is likely that you may have seen me on my rounds.

I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine.

For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed- please email [email protected].

As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting a company’s business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

Summer picnic Sunday 26 June was a glorious day for a picnic! Live music with Alex Chapman, ice cream from Tartaglia, cakes from Vanilla Pod and a BBQ complemented the hot sunshine as local residents joined us in Elmbridge Formal Gardens for the afternoon. Gloucester City Council & Neighbourhood Management Services offered great support, together with the City Planning team who provided information and collated local thoughts and feedback. Gloucestershire Police representatives were on hand with advice, and Gloucester Folk Museum kept little ones entertained with a variety of toys and games. The afternoon was a simple and friendly affair, and a chance to learn more about the city and neighbourhood in which we live. The event could become an annual item if local residents feel they would benefit and all thoughts are welcomed by the Committee.

Seating for Armscroft Park We have secured funding for some new seating in Armscroft Park. With the expert advice of the British Trust of Conservation Volunteers we will be procuring between two and four benches, to be installed early in 2012.

Railway Triangle Development - local impact A planning application for a Morrisons store has

been submitted (ref 11/00902). Plans include

rainwater run off through Armscroft Park. Local

residents are invited to share any concerns either

directly with the Council or with the Partnership.

Windfall Way

Sadly there have been several house break-ins & an act of vandalism to a resident’s car during 2011. Local residents are working with the Police & City Council to establish possible options to protect property.

Funding City Council funding has been

reduced this year and is dependent

upon successful applications. A

maintenance grant of £1,000 was

awarded in July 2011; a community

grant of £1,000 was awarded in

August 2011.

Local notice board & website The Partnership has a notice board (shared with Longlevens) located between the Co-Op and The Balti Hut which it uses for local information, meeting dates and requests. We also maintain a simple website at www.elmbridgenp.com

Annual General Meeting – 18 January

A date for the AGM has been set for Wednesday 18 January 2012 at 7pm at

Lonsdale Methodist Church Hall. The agenda will include a summary of the

Partnership’s ongoing projects, the outlook for 2012 and a full account of

funding arrangements. The current Chair will be stepping down due to family

commitments and new volunteers will be invited to continue the work of the

Partnership.

We look forward to seeing you at our AGM.

Until then, we wish residents .… Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year

Flower bed project This year two Committee members have

worked hard to improve the raised flower

bed opposite the Co-Op on Old

Cheltenham Road. Having secured funding

and energy our two gardeners have cleared

the bed and planted shrubs and hundreds

of spring bulbs in preparation for 2012.

We have also had the help of a local 17-

year old who volunteered earlier this

summer. His efforts have been greatly

appreciated, and new hands are always

welcome.

Local estate agents Farr & Farr generously

donated £200 as sponsorship. We have also

secured a 10% discount with Trioscape

Nursery and thank them for their continued

support. Let’s look forward to a brighter

spring next year!

Sign of the Times – REES Sandwich Bar &Deli

Once again the economic downturn has found another casualty in one of our newest local businesses. Olives , a delicatessen, opened in March earlier this year, however, the turnover and profit expectations of the owners failed to materialise as quickly as required and resulted in the business closing its doors for the final time in August.

However, a s quickly as Olives closed; the REES Sandwich Bar & Deli immediately replaced it. Andy Rodway and his partner, Marie Urch, who happen to be expecting their first baby at the end of this year own the new business.

Andy is known in the community for his C&R Landscaping business and it is from working in the local area that triggered the idea that during the day somewhere to purchase sandwiches and snacks was needed. Having seen the premises in Cheltenham road, Andy identified it as an ideal opportunity to set up a family business based on his original idea.

Initially, REES will focus on establishing the Freshly Made Sandwich and Snacks business.

Special sandwich deals are offered, daily, to promote this initiative which aims to attract local residents, students and passing trade also. Andy and Marie are very keen to establish the deli side of the business also and would like to hear the views of their customers about the products they would like to see in the shop.

Finally, let us as a Community help these small business owners to make a success of their venture and hope that there is a long term future for the REES Enterprise.

At Last! A NEW FORM OF HEATING FROM GERMANY

Simple to install, Powerful, and no more servicing - EVER!

In Germany and Austria it can get as low as -20, even -30ºC and a single snowfall can be as

much as 3ft or more overnight. To deal with this severe cold they need powerful heating able to

cope with sub zero temperatures and sudden climate change. They need excellent control and

above all - low running costs without the need for constant servicing and replacement parts.

The solution, incredibly... is electric! This incredible

heating could be the answer to help beat ever increasing

energy costs and amazingly, it is not gas or oil, or solid

fuel - but clean electric! All you need is standard supply

and NO special tariff like economy 7.

All over Europe more people are choosing to heat their

homes and offices with this very special form of electric

heating in preference to oil gas or E7. In our area, more and more of our customers are making

that same decision and when you see this incredible heating for yourself you could be next! The

heating looks just like conventional radiators, but STOP! it is very different! Put simply, that

clunky central heating boiler needing constant servicing and replacement parts isn’t the only

choice anymore!

Now you can heat your homes, offices, extensions or conservatories with these incredible

heaters providing individual control over every room without the need for a central control or

wasted boiler space. This incredible German heating simply plugs in! Job Done! You can do

just one room or the whole house! This heating, whilst quite NEW in the UK has been

mainstream for a very long time in Germany and Austria. Sunflow Ltd. offer a complete solution which can include disposing of your old central heating

system, even oil tanks! Discover for yourself this incredible German heating.

Barnwood Primary School

As Christmas approaches could there be a better time

to look at the “Good Will” being generated by our local

primary school?

In keeping with its Christian ethos the school is actively

pursuing several initiatives, which are geared to helping

others who are far worse off than themselves, whilst being

prepared to share their knowledge, experiences and understanding with the people of other

countries.

Continuing Indaba Project

What is Indaba? Indaba is a Zulu term meaning “the coming together for meaningful

discussion”.

The Indaba Pilot is a Gloucestershire Diocese project which brings together

representatives from different Continents and Countries to provide a

medium for the establishment of relationships, continuing discussions about

such critical topics as Poverty, Resources, and Youth and Intergenerational

issues. It is considered a “wonderful opportunity “where both faith and day

to day life experiences are shared, where the different participants “Listen

respectfully” to the views of their counterparts.

As part of this a multi-faceted Gloucester group, Head Teacher Anne Davies, considers herself

fortunate to be selected to fully participate in the project, which includes visits to the dioceses

of El Camino Real in California and Western Tanganyika in Tanzania.

In February, the groups from America and Tanzania are due to visit the UK, and it is intended

that a Tour of Barnwood School, would be an important part of the Itinerary. Everyone at the

school is eagerly looking forward to this meaningful event.

Comenius Project

As budgets at all levels of education are being reduced the school is delighted to have again

been selected for a new International Comenius project based on “Skills for Life”.

It will involve participants from Poland and Italy who were due to visit Barnwood in late

November. The school council were busy preparing ideas and a programme of activities and a

presentation for the inaugural visit and everyone was looking forward to setting up successful

working partnerships in the school’s sharing environment.

Seeds for Africa

During the Harvest Festival service the children learnt from each other about the Seeds of Africa

Charity. The objective was to generate funding for gardening equipment, tools, and plants

which would allow a family to create its own food source. Tree saplings and vegetable seeds

would be provided to form Fruit Orchards and Kitchen gardens at schools. The food grown,

including beans and maize often forms part of the children’s midday meal. During October the

school raised over £300 in contributions to this worthwhile cause.

Operation Christmas Child

Finally Operation Christmas Child was completed during November, where shoe boxes were

filled with practical gifts by Pupils and then donated for distribution amongst the less fortunate

members of our global society. This initiative has again proven to be a successful exercise with

between 80 -100 shoe box donations.

This alternative approach to Christmas brings home the importance of appreciating what we

have personally, even though we ourselves cannot escape the current economic downturn!

Let us all congratulate Anne Davies and all at Barnwood Primary School for their charitable

actions and wish Anne, her Staff, Children and Governors a healthy and happy Christmas and

New Year.

TThhee CCrroossss KKeeyyss –– AA FFaammiillyy PPuubb

A recently developed trend both in Gloucestershire and throughout the UK generally, is the For Sale Sign attached to many of the Public Houses (Pubs) you come across.

In Barnwood, however, Patrick Evans has decided to “buck the trend” and as Landlord of the Cross Keys Pub, he has taken on the challenge of turning this former Sports bar into a facility to which all families will be welcomed.

Since moving into the Cross Keys in March this year and in collusion with Enterprise Breweries Pat closely supported by daughter Debbie are in the process of transforming this former “ mans” pub into a place where females and families can visit without the intimidation or discomfort.

There is now a demarcation between the Games bar and the expansive but comfortable Lounge bar areas, which are ideal for functions. Already Family Birthday, Retirement and Engagement parties have featured and Hen nights have also been successfully accommodated.

The transformation started in the summer with the Beer Garden which now includes an aviary which cages a variety of birds and is an added attraction for the children. The Cross Keys offers ample parking at the rear of the pub when required.

Although lots of changes have been made to the Lounge, Pat is understandably frustrated with the Brewery because the work is not quite complete; however, it has not reduced the enthusiasm of either Pat or Debbie. Both remain adamant that this is certainly a long term family venture and as such are prepared to be patient in order to achieve their goal of creating the “Family Pub”.

The Kitchen has recently been refurbished and is now operating. Already Sunday lunches are available and a Curry Night every Friday is proving most popular. The meals are prepared by the Evans family using locally sourced produce and a simple daily menu is proposed from early December.

Pat is keen to attract new customers from the community areas around the pub. He is looking to provide an alternative to the “TV” by offering a comfortable environment where couples can relax, have a drink and order a meal if wanted - without having to drive to and from the pub!

Already a number of new clientele are visiting to check out the new pub and so far feed - back is favourable. “ Regulars” have welcomed the initiatives and are equally keen to see the pub succeed.

Sports teams for both Females and Males are proposed including Darts and Pool, however, for the partners who do not wish to play, the separate lounge bar provides an ideal place to catch up on the latest news or gossip. Quiz nights is another feature planned for the near future.

Pat is keen to retain the sports theme but believes that he can achieve the right balance between the Games room and the Lounge areas to keep everyone happy. In the lead up to Christmas there will be themed nights including a Mulled Wine Evening and New Year’s Eve will be open to everyone- It will definitely not be a ticket only affair!

Pat’s venture in to the Licensed Bar Trade follows over 30 years employment with the Post Office and following his retirement early this year he decided to take on this new venture . However, his family are fully supportive of Pat’s project which he is thoroughly enjoying in his new found role as proprietor of the Cross Keys Pub.

Why not give it a try by visiting the Cross Keys and deciding for yourself how near Pat and Debbie are to achieving their Community “Family Pub”!

DAVE’S TOP TIPS

Types of sealant

Silicone sealants

Silicone sealants are not water based so they do not need to dry to go hard, they go hard through a chemical process occurring as a reaction with air. This process is called curing. Silicone sealants are waterproof, can be used outdoors for a variety of waterproofing jobs and come in many colours including clear.

Water based sealants

These sealants and fillers are water based and usually used for gap filling down the sides of architraves or in the top of skirting boards. Again they are supplied in many colours and can be over-painted, some can be sanded and the white ones can sometimes be stained but check on the tube if this is the case.

Roofing sealants

Roofing and gutter sealants are highly flexible, completely waterproof and can be used, as the name suggests, for sealing leaks in gutters and flat roofs. The surface must be absolutely free from dust to get the best possible seal.

Dave Stevens.
