Editor:
I’m Dennis and as an agent for the Works I have been distributing the Works local to your homes for nearly three years, so it is likely that you may have seen me on my rounds.
I am now looking to submit some interesting articles, which I hope, will complement our already popular magazine.
For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed- please email [email protected].
As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting a company’s business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS
How to cure an air lock
If no water, or a spluttering supply, comes out of the hot tap when its opened, the likely cause is an air lock. If you have an automatic washing machine, and have both the hot and cold supplies connected, an effective remedy can be implemented quite easily.
The cold water to at least one of the downstairs taps will be connected directly to the mains (this is generally the kitchen sink tap). The washing machine will be connected to this run of cold pipe as it needs mains pressure to work properly. The mains pressure of the cold water is much greater than that of the hot water and we can use this greater pressure to push any air locks back to the hot water storage tank.
Disconnect the cold water hose from the back of the washing machine (Turn the valve off first). Disconnect the hot water hose from the valve on the hot water pipe. (Turn this valve off first also). Now connect the free end of the cold hose, to the free, hot valve. Turn on the hot water valve and then the cold water valve. This will now allow the greater pressure of the cold water to push any air back up the hot water pipe.
Leave both valves open for approximately 30 seconds and then close, cold first. Now check the flow from the hot tap at the kitchen sink and the air should have been dispelled.

Dave Stevens.

The Perils Of The Perils Of The Perils Of The Perils Of HomeHomeHomeHome Made Wills By Made Wills By Made Wills By Made Wills By Martin RobertsMartin RobertsMartin RobertsMartin Roberts I’m dealing with a case at the moment where an elderly man, living in supported lodgings, decided one day that he ought to make a Will. He did this firstly because he never saw any of his family (he didn’t have any close relations anyway) and secondly because he wanted his fellow residents at the lodgings to benefit from his estate and he knew that unless he made a Will they wouldn’t.
The matter was complicated by the fact that the man had a history of mental illness and in fact many years before (when it’s accepted his mental health was much worse than it was when he made his Will) a Receiver had been appointed by the Court of Protection to look after his financial affairs – the Receiver was not a relation of the man.
The man had a conversation with those closest to him (his carers) and one of them agreed to get him a “make a Will” kit from a local stationers. He did that and with some help from the carers, he completed a Will in which his fellow residents were to benefit from his estate. It wasn’t a very large estate but it turned out to be large enough to warrant a fight after his death about the validity of the Will.
The evidence is that although the man’s affairs were dealt with under the supervision of his Court of Protection Receiver he almost certainly had the legal capacity required to make a valid Will. Certainly the existence of a Receiver isn’t evidence of lack of capacity to make a Will, even if the Receiver had only been appointed shortly before the Will was made. In fact in this man’s case it was many years before and the reality was that the arrangement had been left as it was for convenience; because it worked perfectly well. The man’s mental state was probably such that at the time he made his Will he didn’t need a Receiver.
After the man’s death the executor needed to obtain a Grant of Probate to the Will and that’s where his problems started. The application was blocked by a caveat which had been entered by one of the family members; someone who would have been entitled to a share of the estate had there been no Will – someone who had taken no interest at all in the deceased man during his lifetime. This was the start of a dispute about the validity of the man’s Will, the result of which will most likely be a deal under which the family get a significant share of the estate and a much reduce amount is available for the people the deceased really wanted to benefit.
The key issue in this case is that proper legal advice wasn’t sought at the time the Will was prepared - solicitors weren’t involved. Had they been I’m reasonably confident that the Will would have stood up to scrutiny. The moral – there is no substitute for proper legal advice about Wills. In the long run it can save an awful lot of trouble and expense.

Hypnosis and the therapy within
When you think of hypnosis, what is the first thing that springs to mind? Spiralling eyes? Swinging pendulums? People being taken over by a dark force that can control their every move as they have a sudden desire to cluck like a chicken, dance on a tabletop or believing they have turned into a dog etc? As amusing as the fictional tv displays of eyeliner-clad characters leering over an unsuspecting person chanting 'look into my eyes, look into my eyes, not around the eyes but into the eyes' can raise a giggle or two, it is a far cry from the calm, relaxed experience that is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is a contract between two people, the client and the therapist. When a person comes into my office my job is to make him or her feel comfortable and relaxed. I need to fulfill my part of the contract by finding out in detail what my client needs from me and where he or she wants to be within themselves. The clients part of the contract is to be open and honest, allowing me to work thoroughly. When the outcome desired has been decided we then go on to induce 'trance'. This can seem like quite a daunting word but the reality is that we all go in and out of trance many times a day. It is merely a level of consciousness where we focus more on one particular thing, like reading a good book, losing yourself in a movie, driving on auto-pilot to work!! When the client has relaxed sufficiently we are able to allow the therapy to work at a deep level of the mind, all of the time the client can hear and remember everything. When my client is in trance I would not be able to make him or her do or say anything that they do not want to. The client remains in control at all times. Hypnosis is not yet regulated in the UK. There are many lists/registers that people can join and even call themselves a hypnotist after reading a non-validated course or script online. Research well and make sure your therapist is fully insured and qualified. At Summer Hypnotherapy you can be sure of excellent care. I am fully insured, qualified in NLP and Hypnosis and registered with the GHR who ensure I carry out regular CPD training and attend peer support meetings so I can provide you with the best therapy. So, what can hypnotherapy do for you? Some of the many things that can be tackled with hypnotherapy are: Smoking cessation, weight control, exam/interview nerves, emotional or relationship problems, stress and anxiety, agoraphobia, fears and traumas, self control and motivation, sports motivation, confidence, sleep problems and relaxation. If you or someone you care about is not living their lives to the full, if they are being held back due to matters of the mind then give me a call. I'll always do my very best to help you regain control of your life. Lets see what 2011 can bring! Jacqui 07811 265 351 [email protected] www.summerhypnotherapy.co.uk

Barnwood Primary School: Comenius Project
As we commence the New Year it is an opportune time to check the progress of the Comenius project, which is ongoing at Barnwood Primary School. This International project involves the cross fertilisation (exchange) of ideas and cultures by schools from the participating countries within Europe. Schools representing England, Italy, Greece, Spain, Poland, Sweden and Hungary are all involved. As the Project Coordinator, the Headteacher Anne Davies has successfully overseen the project since its inception in 2009 and is proud that the school’s achievements have been recognised by the British Council, primarily for its pro active approach to the Life Long Learning Process. The project focuses on the sharing of ideas, culture and philosophies from each country. A forum of staff representing each school meet 2 / 3 times per year in a different country to report on their actions and progress before deciding on the next phase of the project. It appears to be a most successful approach as the staff involved are both enthused and motivated by the numerous ideas generated from their group discussions. Staff are also conscious of the valuable experience they are gaining from seeing first hand the way that education and schools operate in other countries. Currently the project theme is the Landmarks of your Country. The school at Barnwood is focussing on several well established landmarks in London, the children have been busy making some excellent model replicas of several famous landmarks including: the Royal Albert Hall, Big Ben, Nelson’s Column, St Paul’s Cathedral, Hampton Court and the more recent London Eye. This activity depicts not only the enthusiasm for the project but also the undoubted talents of both staff and pupils. An important facet of the project is the strong Communication links now set up between the different schools at both staff and pupil level. Power Point Presentations, regular planning meetings and use of e-mail allow immediate and regular communication access for staff whilst the children are encouraged to exchange emails, letters and cards with their peers in other countries. This effective communication network is undoubtedly a major factor in the success of the project so far. The visit to Sweden before Christmas was an enlightening and heart-warming experience for Deputy Head Chris Trout. Her recollection of the school in Sweden being lit up by candles throughout has had a profound effect on her and is an example of the personal benefits being gained from project experiences. Chris is currently preparing the school’s application for re-accreditation to the British Council’s International Award for Schools. An action plan has been submitted and subsequently approved. A portfolio is now being prepared for evaluation, which will focus on specific areas of expertise, and will emphasise the impact that the Comenius project has made on school life. An example from the portfolio of these ideas in action will be the Day devoted to French Culture planned for Pupils in Year 3 and 4 and due to take place in July. This particular project is due to end later this year however, everyone at Barnwood School is optimistic that further Comenius projects will be undertaken. I think that the Barnwood school should be commended for this project work in which everyone in the school can openly contribute to the sharing of knowledge and ideas within our European Community.

Over Christmas The Salvation Army in Gloucester prepared 250 food and 250 toy parcels for the needy in Gloucester. Major Adrian Altman the commanding officer said. “The demand was 25% up on previous years. This involved a great deal of work from our members but we could not have managed without the generosity of the people of Gloucester and we would like to thank everyone for their support at Christmas and throughout the year.”

Elmbridge Junior School: “Dealing with Adversity” What a start to the New Year for the Elmbridge Junior School! Glen Tharia and his Staff have emerged from a turbulent period that could have had a devastating impact on the children at the school. The problems started in the early hours of Christmas Eve when the Site Manager alerted head teacher Glen to the issue of burst water pipes. Investigation revealed that ruptured water pipes on the upper floors was causing water to pour into two classrooms and a cloakroom at ground floor level. Their immediate action of transferring books and materials from the affected areas, this action undoubtedly saved the school substantial replacement costs. To further compounded the problem the schools heating system failed which was certainly affected by the initial flooding. All in all a series of issues which a lesser school might find difficulty in resolving! A Working party, including the Chair of Governors, was established, which during the period between Christmas and New Year physically tackled the problems associated with getting the school ready for the return of the Pupils in early January. Health and Safety issues were prioritised to guarantee the safety of Children and Staff with the affected areas completely sealed off to prevent access and allow the workmen total freedom to repair and refurbish the flooded areas without disruption. Contingency planning involved utilising the music room and library as temporary classrooms, with a section of the school hall used as a storage area for coats and books. The team’s objective of completing this part of the contingency plan was very successfully achieved. So much so that when the children returned to school, apart from some minor changes to classroom location they were oblivious to the serious incident that their Head, Teachers and Staff had effectively dealt with. The repair and refurbishment work is planned for completion in mid February in time for the children’s return from their half term break During this stressful time, a positive approach has been adopted by everyone involved. The children’s parents and guardians have given their total support to the school and not one negative comment has been recorded! Undeniably the school has addressed this incident professionally and will be stronger for it. This Unity indicates that irrespective of the adversity any problem can be resolved when addressed by the right people, with the right approach, in the right way! We should congratulate this school for getting everything back together so efficiently and with the minimum of fuss. A school, which our Community should be proud of! Finally, having met Glen Tharia, Head Teacher, on one previous occasion I have found him to be both motivated and enthusiastic about the progress the school has made since his arrival in early 2008. This incident has highlighted his leadership characteristics and I feel sure that this experience will only strengthen his determination when promoting future initiatives as part of the schools development plan.
