An evening view of the golf course.

Hidden away just an hour north of Atlanta, Georgia andsouth of Chattanooga, Tennessee in the scenic foothillsof the Blue Ridge Mountains is the undiscoveredparadise that is Barnsley Gardens Resort. As you drivethrough this quiet and rural area on your way to theresort, it’s hard to believe there is a world class, luxuryresort which is included in Southern Living Magazine’sHotel Collection located around the next turn. Until youarrive at the perfectly landscaped grounds andmeticulously groomed driveway with a firmly closedgate and a pleasant guard manning it who politely asksfor your name and checks your reservation before heever opens the gate.

After driving through the gate, you will traverse the roadback to the registration area, marveling at the emeraldgreen golf course, incredibly lush landscaping ofbeautiful maintained shrubs, trees and lush flowers thatare everywhere on the 1,300 acres of this unique andlovely property.

The 18-hole golf course.

Barnsley Gardens Resort is not your typical resort, butone with a unique and fascinating history. The originalManor House, called Woodlands, was built by GodfreyBarnsley for his beloved wife, Julia, on land that wasonce inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. The ruins ofWoodlands, which were severely damaged by atornado and the Civil War, still stand on the property, carefully restored and maintained as a unique locationfor weddings and other events.

Godfrey Barnsley came to America from England in1824 and became one of the most affluent men in the

South through his shipping business and the cottontrade. In 1828 he married the beautiful JuliaScarborough from Savannah, and began constructionon an Italianate villa and elaborate gardens for hisbeloved wife, inspired by the work of Andrew JacksonDowning, a landscape designer of Italianate and Gothicrevival architecture in the 1840s. Unfortunately, Julianever saw the estate, as she passed away after anillness.

The Rice House Restaurant.

Because of his six children and for future generations ofhis family, Barnsley determined to finish the estate, andin 1848, the estate and gardens of Woodlands werefinally completed. The modern, luxurious Manor Housefeatured modern plumbing, marble from Italy andFrance, and beautiful furnishings from all over theworld.

But the Manor House of Woodlands, directly in the pathof Sherman’s army, was severely damaged during theCivil War; in 1906 a tornado tore away the roof.Although descendants of Barnsley occupied the estateuntil 1942, the gardens and manor house were indisrepair and it was finally auctioned. In 1988 PrinceHubertus Fugger of Bavaria purchased the estate, expanding the gardens and restoring the Manor Houseruins.

Today, Barnsley Gardens Resort is a different sort of

One of the resort’s many lovely cottages.

A girlfriend and I visited Barnsley Gardens Resort in thesummer, and it was an ideal time for a stay as all thegorgeous flowers on the estate were in full bloom. Westayed in one of the charming four-bedroom cottages, each of which is uniquely designed. We had a lovelyroom with a huge soaking tub in the bathroom, and acommon living room area which was furnished withcomfortable furniture and a desk area, where you coulduse the free and very fast Wi-Fi connection. Thecottage had a large front porch, which was wellfurnished and had a fabulous swing. Some of the largercottages also have a kitchen, which would be handy forwhipping up a meal or even just storing snacks anddrinks in the fridge, especially if you were staying forseveral days.

Perfect place to relax!

Be sure to visit the spa, which is located in a beautifulbuilding beside the salt water pool. The spa has anextensive menu, including everything from a hot stonemassage to a radiant skin treatment to a relaxing spapedicure. All guests enjoy full spa privileges, withaccess to the whirlpools, steam room and sauna. Thereare also lower prices available during the week, so besure to check those out. Our massage and pedicurewere perfect and relaxing; then we relaxed even moreby the salt water pool. Feeling lazy and enjoying thesun and the pool, we realized we could order from theWoodlands Grill menu and have it delivered poolside,so that’s exactly what we did!

The wonderful spa!

Among the best of the many wonderful experiences wehad at the Barnsley Gardens Resort were the meals, each better than the last. Lunch at the Woodlands Grillis the perfect place for a casual, unpretentious meal, dressed. We also enjoyed the wonderful buffetbreakfast there each morning; it offered a largeselection of breads, fruits, cereals and a fresh omeletand waffle bar and was the perfect start to each day.

Dinner one night at the Woodlands Grill was equallylovely, as candles had been lit and the restaurant madejust a little fancier, so dress-up clothes were perfect. We ate on the screened-in porch overlooking the golfcourse and had the most delicious and perfectappetizer I have ever tasted – fried lobster! One of oursweet golf cart drivers had recommended that we trythis dish and he was absolutely right. My grilled shrimpsalad was prepared to perfection; carrot cake topped offthe dinner.

This is definitely the place to try fried lobster.

The food at the Woodlands Grill was lovely, but it wasdinner at the Rice House Restaurant one night thatreally overwhelmed us; it is truly a gourmand’s delight. In one of the original buildings with stone fireplaces anda lovely sun porch, the Rice House is an elegantplace for an evening meal. The menu features thefinest cuts of beef, wild game, beautifully preparedseafood dishes and produce from the garden on theresort grounds. We feasted on soup, scallops, steakand the most wonderful, rich, and beautifully presentedchocolate dessert.
