Lindsey Montileaux, a student at the University ofSouth Dakota, won first place in the 21st annualNative American Essay Competition sponsored bythe Institute of American Indian Studies at USD.
Montileaux, of Vermillion, received a $1,500 firstplace prize for winning the competition that wasopen to all USD freshmen, sophomores and juniors.
Prizes were also awarded to students finishingsecond and third in the contest, which was judged byUSD faculty and staff for originality, style andrelevance to the announced topic. Samantha Taft, ofNorris, SD, received a $1,000 prize for second placewhile Tyler Stolsmark of Hartford, SD, and TylerJordan Smith of Sioux City, IA received $750 each ina tie for third place.
All four winners of the competition are NativeAmerican students and they were announced at theTiospaye Wacipi powwow at the DakotaDomerecently.
Students entering the essay competition wererequired write at least 750 words and defend theiropinion on a recent editorial in the Rapid CityJournal that proclaimed South Dakota as a “state thatreadily advertises its Native population but regularlyignores its presece.”
The contest also required students to explain howthey would try to change the situation if they were ina position of authority in their community.
According to Emily Haddad, acting chair of theNative Studies Department at USD, the amount ofstudents entering the competition exceeded last yearby about five times the entries received.
“The essays were so good that the facultycommittee reviewing submissions ended up awardingfour prizes rather than the three that had beenadvertised,” she said.

Montileauxawarded top prizein essay contest Katie Pacza, a graduate student from theUniversity of South Dakota, was awardedfirst place at the South Dakota District
National Association of Teachers of SingingArtist Award (NATSAA) competition atNorthern State University in Aberdeen onMarch 24.
Pacza, of Holstein, IA, received first inthe Graduate Classical Division andqualified for the North Central RegionalCompetition in La Crosse, WS, on April 22.Natalie Campbell of Sioux Falls finishedsecond in the Graduate Classical Divisionand will serve as the alternate to Pacza atthe North Central Regional Competitionnext month.
Pacza is a student of Tracelyn Gesteland,D.M.A., assistant professor of music(voice/opera at USD) while Campbellstudies with Brandon Hendrickson, D.M.A.,assistant professor of music (voice/opera) atUSD.
NATSAA, designed to assist singers
prepared to launch their professionalcareers, is a young artist competition wherestudents are required to prepare 60 minutesof music, including a portion that’sperformed before a panel of three judges.
Several USD students participated at theNational Association of Teachers of Singing(NATS) competition that was also held atNorthern State University on March 24.Aubrey Sea of Sioux City, Iowa was awardedfirst place in Women’s Musical Theatre andsecond in Sophomore Women’s Classical.Matt Black of Yankton received first place inMen’s Musical Theatre.
Students awarded second place at theNATS contest included Amanda Rich ofSouth Sioux City, NE, Senior Women’sClassical; Cody Perk of Yankton,Junior/Senior Men’s Classical; JordynBangasser of Sioux Falls, FreshmenWomen’s Classical; Jared Mogen of SiouxFalls, Sophomore Men’s Classical; BrianRasmussen of Sioux City, IA, Freshmen
Men’s Classical; and Hannah Lambertz ofYankton, was awarded second place inWomen’s Musical Theatre.
Additionally, Kristin Edwards ofAberdeen received third place in Women’sMusical Theatre, and Ashley Hogarth ofSioux Falls received honorable mention inWomen’s Musical Theatre. In all, there were122 entries from USD, South Dakota StateUniversity, Northern State and Black HillsState University.

USD music students take top honorsfor singing at regional contest March 24
The USD Jazz Ensemblesunder the direction of Dr. C.J.Kocher and Dr. Tim Farrell willpresent a concert on Friday, April13, at 7:30 p.m. in Colton RecitalHall in the Warren M. Lee Centerfor the Fine Arts.
The concert will feature specialguest Scotty Barnhart, who hasbeen a trumpet soloist with theCount Basie Orchestra for the last20 years. Barnhart is a two-timeGrammy Award winner with theBasie Orchestra and hasperformed on three criticallyacclaimed recordings by pianist
Marcus Roberts and over 10recordings with the likes of TonyBennett, Diana Krall, Ray Charles,and Tito Puente.
Scotty recently released hisdebut solo CD with Unity Musictitled Say It Plain. Acknowledgedas one of the authorities on thehistory of jazz trumpet, heintently researched and wrote theground breaking book The Worldof Jazz Trumpet - AComprehensive History andPractical Philosophy.
