Dear Friends and Cattlemen,

We both welcome and invite you to our sixth annual Barker Cattle Company Bull and Female Sale. As most of you know we have been a partner in the annual “Quest of the West” sale in Spanish Fork, Utah. We have elected to move our share of the sale closer to our home ranch in Southern Idaho, and are excited to offer you a great selection of bulls.

As we have prepared for the sale there have been preparations to make and issues to address. We want to discuss one of those issues and inform you of how we have elected to handle it. It is regarding the issue of the potential susceptibility of HIGH ALTITUDE DISEASE (Brisket Disease) which may cause cattlemen ranging at high altitudes serious problems. It is not our purpose to lecture or teach you about High Altitude Disease. There is plenty of information on the internet, in veterinary journals, etc., to accomplish that for yourselves. Let us briefly tell you what we have done in preparation for past sales, what we have currently learned, and what we are prepared to do now to better serve you, our customers that may have a concern on this issue.

In the past we have PAP (Pulmonary Arterial Pressure) Tested all our bulls and have provided a PAP score for each of them at sale time. Through consultation with the leading specialists, researchers, and veterinarians, in the field of High Altitude Disease we have been advised that testing at altitudes less than 5000 feet is not sufficient to obtain a reliable test. We have been further advised that the bulls must be kept at an altitude of 5000 feet or above for at least three weeks to obtain a reliable test score through PAP testing.

It would be highly impracticable and nearly impossible to move all our bulls out of their present surroundings, location, feed, etc., and move them back to the home ranch where they were raised at an altitude of approximately 5200 feet for the required amount of time to facilitate accurate PAP testing. However, to better serve you our customers and provide more reliable PAP scores, and honest representation we, again through professional advisement, have decided to do the following: (1) Move 30 selected bulls to the required elevation for the required time for adequate adjustment. This selected group will then be PAP tested and the scores will be available at sale time. (2) We have submitted a list of all sires of our bull offering to the appropriate professional data base for High Altitude Disease tendency evaluation. If there is sufficient data to support this evaluation we will compile an ordered list, as far as the data allows, with respect to sires expected potential for transmitting High Altitude Disease. If this evaluation is successful the information gathered will be available on sale day to assist in selec-tion of bulls that may not have been PAP tested. (3) Anyone who may purchase a non-PAP tested bull may take the bull home and have him PAP tested, at our expense within thirty days of purchase, and if the test score does not meet the minimum ac-ceptable standards of certified PAP testing veterinarians we will (a) replace the bull with one that does meet the standard if we have one available, (b) Allow the purchase amount as credit, minus salvage if disposed of, toward a bull at next year’s sale, or (c) accept the return of the bull within 35 days of purchase and we will refund the original purchase price.

We think this is a fair solution to this issue and trust it will be satisfactory with all of you. We are looking forward to meeting & visiting with you on Sale Day.

First Breeding Season GuaranteeAll bulls selling for $2500 or more are guaranteed for the first breeding season. A breeding season is defined as the 90 day period following the first turnout of the bull. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided or if the buyer prefers, credit toward one bull will be given in the following sale, less salvage value of the injured bull. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. Sight Unseen Guarantee/Absentee Bidding: We realize it can be difficult for many of you to get away in the spring and we provide the following service to assist you. A 100% satisfaction guarantee for cattle purchased in your absence is offered if a designated representative of Barker Cattle Company makes the purchase for you. Delivery: Free delivery on any bull to a central point up to 300 miles. Free delivery on 5 or more bulls pur-chased up to 500 miles to a central point. All other de-liveries made at cost. All cattle will be delivered at the buyer's risk and within a reasonable length of time after the sale. Females delivered at cost. Terms & Conditions: All Bulls & Heifers will sell under Suggested Sale Terms & Conditions of the major breed Associations. Terms are CASH. Breeding Guarantee: Open Female Guarantee-We guarantee that all breed-ing age cattle sold by Barker Cattle Company are fer-tile to the best of our knowledge. If an open female is determined as a non-breeder by a licensed, agreed upon vet, we will credit you the purchase price of the female (minus market salvage value) as credit to the ranch or the cattle from the same ranch in the next sale. You must notify us before you cull any infertile animals.

Angus + Bulls: Several of the prominent beef breeds have provisions for registering percentage, cross-bred or composite cattle. The American Angus Association does not have such a provision. Seed stock producers have created the term Angus + to identify high percentage Angus or purebred Angus from unregistered dams. Barker Cattle Company maintains three specific breeds ie. Angus, Simmental, and Maine Anjou. With this type of operation, com-posite cattle are easy to come by. We have thirteen Angus + bulls in the sale offering.
