Mark Barden’s music understands sound as a fundamentally physical phenomenon. By emphasizing the violence of sound-making—with all its gripping, striking, and scraping—he invites the audience not just to listen, but to feel their own bodies listening and engaging with sound and, vicariously, with the musicians‘ bodies as their muscles and breath vibrate the air. Recent works marry virtuosic execution with noise-based sonic material, striving for an inward-turned complexity that, like microscopic views of cells or atoms, is both life-affirming and dizzying in detail.

Barden (b. 1980, Cleveland, Ohio, USA) studied composition with Lewis Nielson, Rebecca Saunders, Mathias Spahlinger, Jörg Widmann, and Roger Redgate. He holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory (USA), Hochschule für Musik Freiburg (Germany), and Goldsmiths (UK). He has given masterclasses and guest lectures at music conservatories in the US, Germany, Estonia, Austria, and England and joined the composition faculty at Fondation Royaumont for the Voix Nouvelles summer program in 2019. For his compositional work, he has received numerous international awards including a Composers’ Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, the GEMA German Music Author’s Prize, a scholarship to the Darmstadt Summer Courses, residencies at the Berlin Academy of the Arts and the German Studies Center in Venice, as well as the sole annual Commission Prize from the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 2016.

His works are regularly performed by leading musicians such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble intercontemporain, ensemble recherche, the Mivos Quartet, KNM Berlin, Ensemble Mosaik, Nicolas Hodges, the Arditti Quartet, and many others at contemporary music festivals such as the Donaueschingen Festival, Wien Modern, and the Witten Festival. His first portrait CD is available on Col Legno (2016) and a second will be released on Wergo in 2020. His works are published by Edition Peters. Mark Barden lives in Berlin.

Mark Bardens Werke verstehen Klang als ein grundsätzlich physisches Phänomen. Indem er die Gewalt von Klangerzeugung betont—das Greifen, Schlagen und Kratzen—lädt er das Publikum ein, nicht nur zuzuhören, sondern den eigenen Leib wahrzunehmen, wie er zuhört und sich mit Klang und—empathisch—mit den Körpern der Musiker befasst, deren Muskeln und Atem die Luft zum Schwingen bringen. Neuere Stücke verbinden Virtuosität mit geräuschbasiertem Klangmaterial und streben nach einer nach innen gewandten Komplexität, welche, ähnlich wie Mikroskop-Ansichten von Zellen oder Atomen, zugleich lebensbejahend und von einem schwindelerregenden Detailreichtum geprägt ist.

Barden (geb. 1980, Cleveland, Ohio, USA) komponiert Konzertmusik und Klanginstallationen mit und ohne Live-Musiker. Er studierte Komposition bei Lewis Nielson, Rebecca Saunders, Mathias Spahlinger, Jörg Widmann, and Roger Redgate und hat akademische Abschlüsse vom Oberlin Conservatory (USA), der Hochschule für Musik Freiburg und Goldsmiths (UK). Er hielt Meisterkurse und Vorträge an Musikhochschulen in den USA, Deutschland, Estland, Österreich und England und war im Sommer 2019 Dozent in Komposition bei den Voix Nouvelles Ferienkursen an der Fondation Royaumont in Frankreich. Für sein kompositorisches Schaffen erhielt Barden zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, u. a. den Komponistenförderpreis der Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, den Deutschen Musikautorenpreis von der GEMA, einen Stipendienpreis von den Internationalen Ferienkursen für Neue Musik Darmstadt, Aufenthaltstipendien von der Akademie der Künste Berlin und dem Deutschen Studienzentrum in Venedig sowie die einzige jährlich vergebene Auftragskomposition von der Bayerischen Akademie der schönen Künste in 2016.

Seine Arbeiten werden häufig von führenden Musikern wie Klangforum Wien, Ensemble intercontemporain, ensemble recherche, dem Mivos Quartett, KNM Berlin, Ensemble Mosaik, Nicolas Hodges, das Arditti Quartett u. v. a. bei Festivals wie den Donaueschinger Musiktagen, Wien Modern und den Wittener Tagen für neue Kammermusik aufgeführt. Seine erste Porträt-CD erschien 2016 von Col Legno und eine zweite folgt 2020 auf Wergo. Seine Werke werden bei Edition Peters verlegt. Mark Barden lebt in Berlin.
