SHAMROCK Street this week went through somemajor restoration with the laying of an asphaltoverlay by the Department of Main Roads. The upgrade to the running surface, the road

between the two white lines, was funded by thegovernment department as part of a wider regulatedproject; relaying the asphalt on main roads in all thecommunities in western Queensland.

Blackall Tambo Regional Council CEO Ken Timmssaid Council had contributed over $200 000 to theextensive road restoration, to ensure that the nishedsurface was absolute and tidy. The work conducted by the Main Roads crew

consisted solely of the running surface. Councilfunded the necessary work to be carried out on theremaining areas of the main road.

Mr Timms said, The option for us was to do thecar park area on the side of the road, the middle part

of the road running alongside the garden beds and abit in the middle of an intersection, orbe left with abig lip in some places, he said.

For example, in the middle of the road, if it wasntresurfaced along with the rest of the main road, water would just lie there and eventually soften theroad edge, and create potholes.

Mr Timms went on to say that the works wereinitially meant to be carried out on Saturday andSunday to minimise the disturbance to tourists andbusinesses but broken machinery in Tambo haddelayed the program.

It is very unfortunate that the businesses have feltthe impact of the works, Mr Timms said.

Council Manager of Works Paul Martin said that themain roads are resurfaced approximately every 15years, in order to maintain them in good condition.

The Barcoo Independent, Friday, June 25 2010 - TV GUIDE

Send your dates in! I have attended the third annualCouncil of Mayors meeting in Canberraat the end of last week. As part of theRAPAD group, we have an OutbackRegional Roads submission before thefederal Minister for Infrastructure andPlanning Anthony Albanese. Should webe successful, this submission would increase the totalnew funding for roads in the central region to 15 millionper annum for ve years.

Canberra was cold and bleak with little joy in themoney department, however with a submission fromthe Blackall Tambo Regional Council we will share inthe $100 million set aside for local Governments this

year. I was able to speak with both the Special Ministerof State Joe Ludwig and the Hon Anthony Albanese ofmatters which are specic to our region. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council will be making

submissions to the fund and look forward to receivingat least $30,000 to go towards a project in the region. Achallenge to all local governments was issued by the HonMaxine McKew to ensure there was a conscious effort tohave at least 50% of women in all local governmentsand administration. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council does rather well

in this area however I am of the opinion that the verybest applicant for whatever position should get the jobbe they female or male.

An interesting suggestion came forward at one ofthe sessions I attended from Western AustralianLocal Government after the 40% mining tax was beingdiscussed. The suggestion was that all companiesmaking super prots should be taxed on the super taxbasis!

When you come to think of all the multinationalcompanies who do business here in Australia not tomention banks and fuel companies then there couldbe a case for a super tax. I am not sure if it should be40% food for thought! Many ordinary Australians aretaxed up to 48% through our tax system. It does bear agreat deal of discussion!

We welcome Colin Duffy and Lester Schumaker tothe Blackall Tambo management team. I know both

will bring their extensive expertise and skills in theirrespective elds of nancial and business management.I know our welcoming and friendly community willensure both they and their families will settle into the

wonderful lifestyle of both Blackall and Tambo.FOREVER EVERLY, a tribute to the Everly Brothers,

will be entertaining at the Blackall Cultural Centre onSaturday, June 26. Nostalgia at its best!!! Great musicand a two course buffet meal will be included in thevery reasonably priced ticket. Dont miss this greatopportunity to Walk Right Back! July 12 will see the Queensland Youth Orchestra

arrive in Blackall for a week of music and outbackexperience. Members of the Big Band will be working

with the schools in both Blackall and Tambo and givingFREE concerts in Tambo at the Tambo Shire Hall on

July 14 at 6.30pm and in Blackall at the Cultural Centreon July 15 at 6.30pm for 7pm start. Do come along andenjoy the experience of a Big Band in our region.

Taxi service to hit the streetsRight and below:Blackall Tambo RegionalCouncil councillorGraham Schluter, mayor Jan Ross andManager of Works PaulMartin welcomed thenew vehicle to town lastweek, and look forwardto the taxi service

A LOCAL taxi service will be available toresidents of Blackall once again aft er August 1,according to Blackall Tambo Regional CouncilCEO Ken Timms. The last taxi service operating in Blackall

terminated in 2002 and last week Council welcomed the arrival of a new Toyota Hiacevan for the job.

Mr Timms said that the government hadadvertised in the community for a tenderto operate a taxi service, but had had noresponse.

Council then took up the tender because wedidnt want to lose the opportunity, he said.We know that we may have to support it but ifthere is the need for some form of transport toget people around, then we will help that .

Mr Timms explained that while Council iscurrently sourcing the best way of operatingthe service, it is likely that they will lease it outto someone in the community.

He predicts that the main users of the servicewill be those without a current license, thosewith a disability and for transfers to and fromBarcaldine.

THE June-July school holiday youth program looks set to keepeveryone busy and entertained overthe two week period.

Blackall Tambo Regional CouncilSport, Recreation and Youth OfcerLisa Goodman said the free programsare important because they will helpkeep young people engaged.

Although a lot of young people dowork, it is good to have a release fromschool and work and just have somefun with their friends, she said.

It is also a chance for youngpeople to have some structure to

their holidays and for the council toactively engage with young people

within our communities and helpbuild strong relationships. The youth program kicks off on

Saturday morning at 10am on June26 with a photo scavenger hunt atthe Blackall Memorial Hall. That night there will be a

Schools Out Disco at the Blackallshowgrounds from 6pm. Lisa saidthe disco, organised in conjunction

with the Blackall Pony Club, is tocelebrate the end of term 2 and tobring in the June July holidays.

On Monday, June 28 there will bea spotlight and sardines night at theshowgrounds from 5pm. Later in the

week on Friday night, the memorialhall will be buzzing with a techno/board game night from 6pm.There will be a movie night at the

    To the Editor

It is good to see the camping areanear the river is still open! When I sawthe posts going in it didnt look good forthe camping tourist. I have travelled alot of Australia over the past ve yearsso am aware of the wants of a moderntraveller. Talk about Blackall, on theroad, and I am greeted with a positiveresponse. We are recognised as afriendly, tidy and safe town.

A lot of travellers now have theirown apartment on wheels, equippedwith more mod-cons than the averagehouse. Caravans are no longer asmall box with a makeshift bed andhalf a kitchen.

There are a growing number oftravellers who only want a quiet, uncrowded and safe space for a few

days so they can look around. If thereis a tap for potable water and a dumppoint nearby, then that is a bonu s.

A small fee for this site is expectedand acceptable. The money saved inhigher fees is spent in local businesses(fuel, food or doctors etc) in thesefriendly towns.

Also some travellers will only stayin caravan parks and will ring aheadto ensure a suitable site is available. If all are forced into caravan parks at$20 plus a night, then most will justdrive through and spend nothing inthat town.

Some caravan parks now havecabins which are competing directlywith motels and hotels. A lot of caravanparks in Australia have become very

greedy; they see a caravan and expectit to come to their park. Caravan parksneed to look at the travellers needsand update the services offered. Allbusinesses have to do this to survive.

Blackall has achieved its statusas a RV Friendly town. We shouldendeavour to help the council to keepthis reputation. Well done to counciland their staff for providing this cleanmowed area.

The river bank does meet the wishesof our modern day tourists. This isadding to the income of all Blackallbusinesses.
