From the Editor

It was so good to get home to “Byrgenna” after a three week absence due to wet weather and attending the Local Government infrastructure conference in Brisbane. We still have a problem with frogs and mice, however the garden is responding well to the recent moisture and to the cooler weather. It has been much cooler with the change of season to autumn.

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council has received an initial funding amount of $3.2 million to attend to emergent works on the region’s road network. Specialist assistance has been engaged as there are even more detailed assessments to be undertaken to ensure the validity of the flood damage assessment as the Queensland Reconstruction Authority and the Federal Inspectorate expect to receive value for money as Council proceeds to reconstruct the damage created from an unprecedented year of rainfall.

The Blackall Cemetery Columbarium is due to be constructed this week, weather

permitting of course. This is an additional option to the services the Blackall Tambo Regional Council offers to the Blackall community.

The Tambo Cenotarph upgrade is ready to commence, again weather permitting. It will be installed by Anzac Day 2011.

The Historic Blackall Woolscour will receive assistance from the Blackall Tambo Regional Council to ensure their insurance premium is honored for 2011.

A much needed new chair lift has been ordered for the Blackall Aquatic Centre. Council staff will install the hoist as soon as it arrives. The provision of a disabled toilet will be considered

in the 2011/2012 budget. The Blackall Aquatic Centre as

the heaviest user of electricity within council’s infrastructure will be the recipient of the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program Funding to install solar power.

On Friday March 25 the GDL Multi Vendor Bull Sale held at the Blackall Sale yards was well attended and resulted in a total clearance of the bulls on offer.

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council is seeking quotes on a new computer system for the sale yards. This is to ensure the continuation of the upgrades along with the rebuilding of thirty nine pens and associated walkways, and water facilities. Revised fees and charges for the sale yards are to be forwarded to the Blackall Sale Yards Advisory Committee meeting for their comment. I would also like to congratulate Paton Fitzsimons of Ray White Rural on his election as president of the Blackall Livestock Agents Association.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

The footy season is off and running with the Magpies first game this weekend, and the calendar is filling up with all kinds of workshops and events.

We are especially lucky to have so many events for such a small town, and I’d like to encourage everyone to get involved in all that Blackall has on offer. In some ways, opportunities are easier to access out here than in the city. For example, we’re privileged to

be able to attend free exercise programs and cooking classes, and to get involved in a wide range of activities.

It’s great to hear about all these wonderful events and opportunities around the district, so make sure you get in touch with me and let me know what your organisation is up to so that I can give it the coverage it deserves.

As always, I encourage people to keep sending in their news, sports

results, letters to the editor and anything else they would like to see published. Sports photos are always appreciated to accompany the sports results that you send in to the paper.

If there’s anything you’d like to see more of in the Barcoo Independent, please let me know as I am always interested in receiving feedback from readers.

Colour and digitally manipulated images will join monochrome shots for the first time at the Blackall Heartland Festival photography exhibition and sale scheduled to open in May.

Given a black and white theme last year, the exhibition is expanding its range to give photographers around the state a wider choice to play with.

Opening at the Grassland Art Gallery in Tambo on May 14 and running through to June 10, the Tambo Arts Council will be presenting the exhibition as a Blackall Heartland Festival partner.

Event organiser Alison Shaw said the Arts Council was excited to be a part of the festival and was looking forward to presenting the exhibition.

“We are anticipating a wide range of works if 2010 is anything to go by,” she said.

“The exhibition this year will include colour images which will add another dimension to the display, and the theme of ‘Lighting up the West’ really gives photographers a wild card to let their imaginations run riot.”

The exhibition and sale was held in Tambo in 2010 for the first time as a standalone event from the Heartland Art Show, due to the increasing number of entries each year in the photography medium.

The committee is encouraging images that portray the lifestyle of the region in traditional and contemporary ways, exploring the theme of Lighting up the West in terms of showcasing their craft as well as types of subject matter.

A live music performance by Les Chansons singers from Brisbane will enhance the exhibition opening planned for the afternoon of Sunday, June 5.

Visiting Tambo as part of a

tour taking in Rockhampton, Longreach, Muttaburra and Goondiwindi, Les Chansons, which includes former Tambo local Barry Cochrane, sings popular and classical music including many well-known favourites.

“They will be sure to enhance the atmosphere and add to the ambience of the opening,” Alison said.

Other important dates for exhibitors are Friday, April 29, when entries close, and Friday, May 6, which is the latest day that entries can arrive in Tambo.

There is an entry fee of $15 per artist for three items then $20 per item after that.

Entry forms can be obtained from Alison by phoning 0428 546 107 or by downloading them from www.blackallheartlandfestival.com.au

Fundraising is continuing for the Shockwave festival with over $800 raised at a fundraiser held last Thursday night in Brisbane.

Approximately 50 people attended the fundraiser evening and sausage sizzle held at the Shooting Gallery art space in Spring Hill.

The evening featured performances from singers Melinda and Bree Wells and Fresh Elements dance studio as well as art and short films by rural artists.

The fundraising campaign has now raised over $3300 for the event, with organisers urging people to continue to contribute to the online fund at Pozible.com.

The festival organisers aim to raise a total of $19,000 to assist with the costs of the creative arts festival, which will see young people from across the central west region to Blackall on June 4-5.

Festival organiser Brooke Newall said Pozible was a new and interesting way to raise funds for community projects.

“It’s actually also a great way of marketing and promoting the event,” Brooke said.

Events being held during Youth Week at Longreach including a skateboard and scooter competition, a fluoro party and laser skirmish will also raise funds for the event.

The Blackall Campdraft Association recently held a practice and fun day before their annual draft. The day was well attended with over 15 current and new members participating in various aspects of drafting.

There was a high quality of horsemanship and skill on display, both with horse and beast. Junior and mini members also tried their hand in putting horses through the camp and course.

A quality line of cattle thanks to Peel Pastoral Inverness Blackall ran extremely well making for some great rounds.

Thanks must go to Rodney Kings Inverness Blackall for organising

the donation of these cattle.Another thank you goes to Scott

Choyce for the cartage of the cattle once again.

Due to the success of this day, the Blackall Campdraft Association is planning more of these fun days throughout the season to use the facilities at the showground to their full potential.

Next weekend will see plenty of action with the annual Black Stump Campdraft in full swing from 1pm Friday.

Saturday night will feature a meal and live music provided by Tambo band Court in Session.

Local artists will have the chance to discuss, explore and swap ideas leading to developing community arts projects when Tambo plays host to one of this year’s Arts Yakka Workshop on May 28-29.

Arts Yakka workshops will also take place in the Atherton Tablelands, Beaudesert, Moranbah and Dalby.

The workshops are designed to increase the understanding of how the arts can meet the challenges in rural and remote communities.

Participation is open to artists, volunteer community culture and recreation groups, local government, business, special interest groups and media to plan a resilient future while recording memorable stories of past successes.

Teaming up with Queensland Arts Council to facilitate the workshops is Dr Ros Derrett OAM. Ros has had an ongoing connection with regional Queensland communities. Ros was formerly the Head of the

Office of Regional Engagement at Southern Cross University, NSW, has worked in education, community development and arts administration in Australia and overseas, and was co-founder and administrator of Theatre North.

Representatives from state and federal arts agencies may also present at some workshops.

ArtsYakka workshops are free to all participants thanks to the valued support of the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund.

ArtsYakka is an initiative of Queensland Arts Council, the state’s peak body for regional arts. ArtsYakka provides online resources and community workshops that focus on developing and supporting arts and cultural projects.

Local artists were able to test their skils at mono printing and lino printing last week under the tutelage of visiting artist Metka Skrobar.

Eight people attended the three day workshop, which saw participants learn techniques involved in mono printing and lino cuts.

Metka has run a range of artistic workshops in the

Blackall district previously and this latest workshop followed on from her last workshop held in July.

During the RADF funded workshops, artists produced prints to use on cards, in collages and as part of canvas artworks.

The group was able to take time out over the weekend to enjoy lunch at local Blackall cafes.

41,000 kilometres in eleven days? Whatever would anyone be able to clearly recall about their travels in such a short time? To prove me wrong, Bill and Carolyn Hauff have written a chatty and informative small book on their travels from Brisbane to Townsville and back. They give three reasons for their odyssey- Bill’s urge to revisit the Hauff family hometown of Blackall, the need to escape the noisy fanaticism of Gold Coast car racing, and most all, to help boost tourism in country towns.

Obviously written before the drought broke in the west, it shares thoughtful insights into government policies that have gradually and effectively decimated the bush. It calls on city dwellers to enjoy the serenity of the bush and the stoic and

distinctive character of its people, who they say “deserve better than the shabby treatment” by both the Queensland and federal governments.

Blackall and its environment are described lovingly and in detail; our town compares favourably with Mitchell, which they dismissed saying, “It will never be a tourist mecca.” The photos of their trip are well chosen and evocative.

Did I enjoy this book? Would it entice city folk to drive the same area? Yes, it gives tantalising insights into the differing focus of each town they visited, and their dry humour made it easy reading. I hope their plea for outback tourism will encourage others to sample “Da Best” that country folk can offer their city cousins.

In Memory of Florence June Kelly 16.09.1916- 12.03.2011

On Friday March 18, a large number of the Blackall community gathered at the Uniting Church, Blackall to farewell long time resident Florence June Kelly, better known as June.

June was born in Blackall on September 16 1926, to Leslie and Ada Kupfer. Leslie was a boundary rider at Isis Downs at the time and enjoyed a happy childhood there with her brothers Ken, Jack and Wallace and sisters Audrey and Belva.

During those early years to continue her education, June lived for some time with her grandmother Winifred Pattel in Hawthorne Street, before returning to Isis Downs where she assisted her sister Belva with her correspondence lessons.

On March 8 1945 June enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force as an Aircraftwoman, with her recruiting officer describing her as ‘quiet and well mannered, well groomed and full of enthusiasm’ and many life-long friendships were formed during the ensuing months.

On June’s return to Blackall following her discharge from the Air Force on September 20 1946, she commenced work at the Jacolyn Salon with Mrs Mary Williams where she plied her expert dressmaking skills.

June soon met a young man, Robert Francis Kelly. Bob and June were married on November 15 1947 in St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Blackall. They moved to 9 Daisy Street, which remained their life long home which they shared with their children Vivian, Neil and Lewis.

The expenses of a senior education for her children

necessitated June’s return to the workforce and she again worked at the Jacolyn Salon. Many happy times were spent in those shops under Tatt’s Hotel. June was very much a homebody, but always at the ready to help out whatever the need and enjoyed having a cup of tea with neighbours.

Bob had a keen love of gardening both fruit and vegetables along with glorious displays of flowers. June was highly involved with these and the prize winning entries in the local Flower Shows was an annual event.

June was a very active member of the Returned Service League Ladies’ Auxilliary, as treasurer for many years as well as actively helping with fundraising efforts, participating in Anzac Day and Remembrance Day activities and placing crosses and poppies on the war graves each Anzac Day.

A great sadness came over June’s life in 1994 when her beloved husband of 47 years passed away suddenly. Together they had faced so many of life’s challenges and were now ready to relax and enjoy the quieter life. However, in time, June mastered her aching heart and she continued to be an active member of Blackall society.

She continued her keen involvement with the Ladies Auxiliary of the RSL (being Treasurer for quite a few years), the Thrift Shop, she played a mean game of bowls, enjoyed the Seniors mornings at the RSL hut and loved her weekly shopping trips down town especially to buy that winning lotto or scratchie.

June was laid to rest in the war ceremony with her husband who was buried there exactly 17 years before in a RSL ceremony with poppies laid at the graveside.
