it work for you

What exactly is barcoding?

• Barcoding is the process of labeling/tagging/marking “information”

• inventory items• employee badges• customer/vendor/job numbers• any information used to describe something

Page 3: Barcoding for control and profit!

What is the purpose of barcoding?

• Barcodes are used to:• Reduce errors in data entry by removing the

process of manual entry by a person• To track information through a process of steps• Control inventory of information

What is a barcode?

• A barcode is a series of lines of varying width, printed, as on a container or product, that can be read by an optical scanner to determine a wealth of information of an item:• Names/Descriptions• Addresses/Destinations• Cost/Price/Charges/Divisions/Types etc.• Any other stored information

What is a barcode? Cont..

• A barcode is simply a translated representation of characters and numbers. All a scanner does is translate the lines back into the character representation and sends it to a waiting field in software in the same way entering characters on a keyboard does.

Why should I use barcoding?

• Barcoding’s primary function is to reduce errors!• Errors cost money to correct• Errors cost time to correct• Errors cause customer/vendor/technician ill will

Page 7: Barcoding for control and profit!

Why should I use barcoding? cont.

• Barcoding’s secondary function is to save time – and time is MONEY!• Save time entering data• Save time tracking information• Save time counting/logging information

Page 8: Barcoding for control and profit!

Where do I start with barcoding?

• Determine what information to barcode• How am I going to affix barcodes• Directly on items• On bins/aisles• Print barcode lookup books

• What other information do I want on a label and what size label do I want to use – this is mutually dependent on one another.

Page 9: Barcoding for control and profit!

How do I create barcodes?

• Once you decide what size label to use and what to print on it you have to create a layout of how it should look.

• There are numerous places in Ventus and VMS GUI to print labels – vendor/customer, inventory and purchase order.

• Enter the label edit function and enter the information to print and where to print it.

How do I print barcodes?

• There are two times to print barcodes• all initial items to label• maintenance or additional labels as data changes

• The initial run should be done with multi-row/column labels on a laser printer due to the sheer volume of labels.

How do I print barcodes? Cont.

• Initial printing may require sorting and printing labels by different groups• Main division vendor/customer/item/P.O. #• Inventory by location/bin/aisle

• A label printer should be considered for maintenance labels based on volume of labels needed – these range from small personal printers to expensive industrial printers.
