I WANT TO GO to the sea

«VOGLIO ANDARE AL MARE QUEST’ESTATE VOGLIO PROPRIO ANDARE AL MARE DEVO RIPOSARE QUEST’ESTATE DEVO ANCHE RIPOSARE VOGLIO ANCHE VEDERE LE DONNE BIANCHEDIVENTARE NERE nude... le tette nude LE VOGLIO TOCCARE QUEST’ESTATE VOGLIOPROPRIO ESAGERARE le tocco tutte quante VOGLIO ANDARE AL MARE PERCHÉ MI HAN DETTOCHE Là... sì che ci si diverte MI VOGLIO SFOGARE QUEST’ESTATE VOGLIO FARE INDIGESTIONE ...di donne e di sole... ...di donne da sole...»This song by [Italian pop singer] Vasco Rossihas been stuck in my brain for a while: I love theidea of the sea, the sun, the salt water ready to be plunged intoalone or with friends. It is an idea that does me good to thinkabout. Just thinking about untying the moorings and wander-ing off in my little boat lifts my spirits. A few more days to stressout like the Lehman Brothers and then, finally, we’re off! Finallyit’s August and we can escape in my little wooden craft up anddown the coastline of the Italian peninsula. We’ve been holdingour breath for six years now already. They went by in a flash, asif the world was suspended, waiting for who knows what.Everyone who has been in the boat business for more than fiveyears is waiting for the autumn boat shows to tell whether ornot the crisis is over and sales will begin to pick up again. Thecrisis no longer exists and we find ourselves simply transport-ed into another world, so we can quit holding our breath andstart to live again. Let’s take our boats out of the harbor andenjoy the most beautiful sea on the planet. Don’t be afraid, toquote a Holy Father. If you have not stolen, cheated, killed orenslaved someone to get the money for buying your boat, don’t

be afraid. What could be better than boarding your boat withyour family, dog, cat and canary and heading off to sail into thesunset? Try and tell me… (certainly not taking your placeamong the rows of beach umbrellas, forced to overhear your

neighbor’s continuing his workon his cell phone). I know, thedocument checks by theseven Authorities controllingthe seas are annoying. Westruggle every month againstthis waste of public money, butwe intend to address thetheme of how to make thegovernment pay attention tothis problem in upcomingissues more vehemently. For

now, let’s be content with the cancellation of the ownershiptaxes for craft under 14 meters and the reduction by 50% perthose under 20. Politicians are slow to pick up on things, butonce they get started, they either smash things like the unre-pentant ex-minister of finance, Vittorio Grilli, did, or they findband-aid solutions like his successor did. But let’s get back toour desire to go sailing. At a conference in China, the presidentof their shipbuilding association asked me to teach him the“boat game.” I told him that the most important thing in thegame was freedom: the freedom to leave whenever you want,to go wherever you want, to go with whomever you want, totravel alone or in company of plenty of others. Let’s take backthe freedom to be once again yachters in love with the sea andsailing. Last year fear kept us tied to our desks in our offices andadvised us to go stay in some cheap little guest house, perhapsunder a false name, since you never know. Remember thatpassage in that great book by Romano Battaglia called Sep-tember Stories? “The sea is at once father and son, and thedesire to return to him. The sea is the origin of life, of joy of com-pletion. The sea has long, protective arms, always ready toembrace you. The sea is a brother who gives of himself withoutreceiving anything in return.”Let’s rebel against fear and begin to live and, especially, to sailagain. Francesco Michienzi

«There is a prospect greater than the sea, and it is the sky; there is a prospect greater thanthe sky, and it is the human soul.» Victor Hugo, Les Misérables., 1862

“You may walk through country aftercountry, through lands and through hugecities you’ve never seen before, and over

the whole wide earth, and never learn as muchas you will from the sea” Pär Lagerkvist, Pilgrimat Sea, 1962. Carl William Brown

Andy Warhol.AmericandreamsMdM Museum di Promenade du Port,Porto Cervo-Arzachena (OT) This is the world premiere for this exhibition, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, dealing withthe notion of the American Dream from themid-1970s until the conservative takeover inthe 80s. The story is told through a series of works(about 70 of them), gathered primarily fromItalian private collections, comprising every-thing from one-of-a-kind canvases andworks on paper to LP album covers.

All of the works on display echo the kindof visual language that Andy Warhol isknown for: intentionally playing on obses-sive reproduction of subjects and thepotentially infinite reproductivity ofimages. The show is also an occasion to view a pre-viously unreleased video made by AndyWarhol and Peter Wise in May of 1982 dur-ing their trip from New York to Cape Cod,Massachusetts. The film is projected in partof the exhibition’s five sections. Admission isfree. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 6 pmto midnight. www.mdmmuseum.it

The tuna fish-es that live in the LigurianSea, of major proportions(they can weigh up to 150pounds), are very greedy ofanchovies: for this reason

It is a game in which,no matter how hard you try, no matter howmotivated you are, no matter how much youare willing to spend, victory is never certain.”These words of Sir Peter Blake (a real Ame-rica’s Cup legend, who passed away in 2011)are in the preface to the book Luna Rossa, about the 30th edition of the America’s Cup

(2000). And they are words that well describethe dedication that drives the yachtsmen who

Luna Rossa Challenge has

arrived in San Francisco with

a single boat, but without

doubt it will be the most

tested in view of the Louis

Vuitton Cup.

America’s Cup continues this tradition with even greater empha-sis, presenting a new class of boat, a 22-meter catamaran.

AC 72This 72-foot boat is propelled by an impressively tall (131 feetor 40 m) wing. It can exceed speeds of 45 knots (82 km/h) andits speed potential is four times higher than the 80-foot (24 m)boats used up until 2007. This is an unprecedented physicalchallenge for the 11-member crew, who will need to weigh outthe energy they expend in order to make it to the finish line. Thecatamaran flies over the water thanks to foils displaying anextraordinarily efficient combination of aero- and hydro-dyna-mics. The AC72s have been designed to meet the maximumand minimum limits specified in the “box rules” that define fun-damental requirements in length, width and sail area. Thesestrict limits have been set to assure that competing boats areas similar as possible so that it is the skill of the crew, rather thanthe performance of any individual boat, which determines vic-tory. In May, in the wake of the tragic accident which cost the lifeof a member of the Artemis Racing team (Andrew Simpson),the AC72 and their wings underwent structural revision, became subjected to limitations of winds between 10 and 23knots, and personal safety features were improved. Thirty-sevennew safety recommendations have been introduced during the2013 America’s Cup Summer of Racing.

How did the most famous race in theworld get started? After its first addition in England, the Cup has never missed abeat. The story begins in the Victorian era when the schooner,America, equipped by a consortium led by a group of NewYork businessmen, crossed the Atlantic Ocean to representthe United States at the first World’s Fair, being held inEngland. Before the fair, the schooner won a regatta aroundthe Isle of Wight, claiming a trophy called the £ 100 Cup(successively erroneously called the Hundred Guinea Cup). Afew years later, the last surviving union member, GeorgeSchuyler, donated the trophy, renamed the America’s Cup inhonor of the winning boat, to the New York Yacht Club, withthe recommendation that it become an on-going prize to beawarded following a friendly competition between nations tobe contended aboard two boats after a series of regattas. After claiming the trophy in 1851, the US continued to becrowned in what was to become the longest series of wins inthe sport’s history: a trail of success 132 years long, coveringtwenty-eight editions, spanning from 1870 to 1983, whenAustralia II finally snatched the America’s Cup from theAmericans.

Though it is officially known as the 34th America’s Cup, in rea-lity, it covers a number of events: the America’s Cup Finals, theLouis Vuitton Cup, the America’s Cup Challenger Series, theAmerica’s Cup World Series and the Red Bull Youth America’sCup. The semi-finals, scheduled for September 7 through 21,2013 in San Francisco, culminate with the grand finale, knownas “The Match,” in which the Defender will challenge the win-ner of the Louis Vuitton Cup. The first edition took place in 1851 but, despite its age, theAmerica’s Cup has always involved cutting-edge advances ineach aspect of the race, from the design and construction ofthe boats to the more strictly technological features. Theresearch carried out in terms of aerodynamics, hydrodyna-

mics and carbon fiber development have proved invalu-able to many other sectors, including airplane and auto-

mobile manufacturing. With the current edition, the

Hi-tech for spectators, tooAC LiveLine is a system based on graphic insertsthat have been applied for the first time to amovable platform. The idea was developed bythe same team that came up with the graphicsolutions for the world of American football andfor Nascar. The AC LiveLine superimposes usefulgraphic elements that help better understandwhat’s going on in the regattas by broadcastinglive images from the races to see who has takenthe lead at any given time.Guided by a GPS system that allows the route ofthe catamarans to be monitored with up to twocentimeters in precision, the system has made abig splash with the organizers, who decided touse it to handle the event right from the water. The telemetry is useful for moving the buoysrapidly and accurately and for controlling the farends of the field of the regatta, while making it

easier for the umpires to verify engagement andmake judgments as accurate as possible. For the TV format, instead, the aim is to take thespectator to where the action is, to be present atthe moment major decisions are being made, while the team is flying through the water at

speeds of over 50 kilometers an hour. Toguarantee complete coverage of the event, cameras shooting from a team of helicopters willbe flanked by a series of land- and water-basedcameras. There are also state-of-the-art, self-cleaning HD cameras with zoom capacity and 4-

directional mobility and highly sensitivemicrophones aboard each craft in thecompetition.On-screen graphics, including the ACLiveLine, help TV viewers to determinethe exact location of the competitors inthe field and provide tactical informationsuch as distance and speed, all in live,HD images. There is also, of course, theVirtual Eye, a 3D-graphics system thathelps understand what’s happening inthe race. The result is a truly “onboard”experience for fans.

In addition, the team that manages thetechnology for remote filming of the America's CupWorld Series live broadcast was also nominated for anEmmy.• This event will be held for the first time in theprotected waters within the San Francisco Bay, insteadof its usual venue in the open sea, as established in theDeed of Gift. The boats departed with a mistralwind around 10 knots and Cruising and A and B sailed towardsthe island of La Maddalena, they crossed the strait betweenPunta Marginetto and Barettini and then they left to starboardSpargi and then Barettinelli di Fuori. From here they returned toPorto Cervo passing off the Island of Monaci. The Cruising C,instead, came with the rest of the fleet to Punta Marginetto;hence, after rounding the island of La Maddalena, they returnedto Porto Cervo along the coast. The final day saw Salperton on the podium as the winner of theCruising Division B and as overall champion. In the Cruising Adivision the 25 meters of Pier Luigi Loro Piana's, My Song, cel-ebrated the victory and the American Bequia was awarded aswinner of the Cruising Division C. Who has never hadto call a telephone company, for example, to complainabout a malfunctioning or broken phone? Who hasn’thad problems with their TV? Or washing machine? Orfurnace? I bet that in each of these hypothetical cases, besides the stress of having a broken appliance, youalso had to deal with getting the run around from themanufacturer, either being passed like a ping-pong ballfrom one operator to another, or being kept inter-

be a real nightmare. If it’s an engine breakdown, it’s evenworse: you’re stuck in the middle of the sea. In fact, it is nofun to be stuck in the middle of the sea, especially on acruise, but if your boat is equipped with a Caterpillar engine, you can relax: the company guarantees that within 48 hoursof your call, no matter where you are in the world (well, Iwouldn’t swear about Antarctica), you will have a technicianon board to solve the problem. This full-time, global assistance program called CatConcierge guarantees you total security at sea. Launched tocoincide with the market introduction of their nautical dieselengine, the Cat C32, the program began as an experimentbetween dealer and manufacturer, aimed to improve cus-tomer satisfaction among yacht owners. Nowadays, itscapacity to improve service quality has won them a muchlarger client base, including shipyards, brokers and owners.Nigel Parkinson, CEO of Caterpillar Marine Power Systems, decided to take the program up to the global level. “We rea-lized that our customers’ experience was having a positiveimpact on boat builders, Cat dealers and, obviously, also onCaterpillar sales.”Whether you own a 40-foot boat or a 129-foot one, the ser-vice offered is the same: free for the first five years for everyyacht purchased from selected, participating boat builders(as long as they are outfitted with a Caterpillar motor, of

For example,as Chris Gates, CEO of Princess, says “We have been enthu-siastic about Cat Concierge from the beginning because itmeshes perfectly with our customer service philosophy andrepresents the ideal complement to our own after sales ser-vice.” During the 2012 Global Superyacht Forum in Amster-dam, Jim Ruffolo, president and CEO of Burger Yachts,

The Cat Concierge program is slated to be extended tocommercial vessels as well. “As soon as they found out aboutthis service, commercial operators requested a similarprogram adapted to their needs,” says Shane Wright, globalmanager at Concierge, “the difference is that we were dealingwith the owners of fleets, for example Port Authorities with 100to 200 vessels, instead of private yacht owners.” Caterpillar hasjust completed a workshop on adapting the process to suit theneeds of key customers in the commercial nautical sector andthe program will be tested on two or three of these customerstowards the end of 2013.

affirmed that the service truly monitors the engine 24 hoursa day and that he engaged his own engineers to test thealarm system and to solve issues before they had a chanceto become serious problems.

AdvantagesCustomers no longer need to deal with reparation or main-tenance issues themselves. Just one call is needed to han-dle the entire question, beginning to end. New boat ownerscan also access free, initial, A to Z, sea- trial services. Duringthe trials, Cat engines are run at a particular RPM to evalu-ate the boat’s performance in ratio to its engine size. This orientation session aims to give owners a sense of confi-dence with Cat engines and its relative associated tools andinstruments. The technicians will explain the different com-ponents and systems of the engine, the types and modalitiesof lubrification to be used, when to schedule periodic main-tenance, what processes needs to be done on a daily basisand other relative arguments. But it is the access to assistance anywhere in the world thatconstitutes its major advantage: Cat Concierge has beenoperating worldwide since May 2012. One of the main chal-lenges to global operation has been to understand andrespond to the very diverse needs and expectations of cus-tomers coming from the four corners of the globe. To meetthis challenge, instead of relying on one head office, three dif-ferent headquarters have been set up in geographic areas indifferent time zones, employing local personnel with an excel-lent knowledge of the product and a profound understand-ing of every aspect of the procedure, thus reducing customerwaiting time to the bare minimum.

Caterpillar has set up headquarters in three different geographicareas (Singapore, Germany and the USA) with

a 3-person team at each location, supported by a vast network ofspecialists.

This is the context in which Marco completed his training, bothas a designer and a builder. The strength of Studio Arnaboldi lies in its ability to come upwith solid solutions. AB Yachts was an excellent training groundfor Marco where he learned to perfect exceptional boats andapply revolutionary building and outfitting techniques. Today hebrings these skills to an exacting clientele who demand light-ness, reliability and performance.

The ideas

An architect and naval engineer, Marco Arnaboldi was already hard at work at hisparents’ company, AB Yachts, while hewas still a student at the University ofGenoa. AB Yachts was founded by his father,Angelo, in 1992 to try out his own ideas for hydrojet-propelled speedboats and the development of light-weight ways to outfit them.

This 62-meter, 700-ton patrol boat can reach speeds of up 36

knots using 14,800 horsepower. It can function using one,

two, three or four engines without suffering any

cavitation. It is widely used in China and Japan

where waves average about three meters in

height and top speeds are almost always

required.

With four small engines, this foil cat catamaran can transport

300 people at 55 knots even in waves as high as 2.5 meters.

In October the Genoa Boat Show comes back, which forover 50 years is the favorite international exhibition of nautical companies to

show their value and their potential. The edition number 53 comes up withimportant changes that reflect a continually changing market.

It is the change time. Leaving the uncertainties in thepast, it is necessary to look to the future with a differentspirit, based on efficient and effective projects. The organ-izers of the Genoa Boat Show know it well, who in just fivemonths (and 47 meetings with groups of exhibitors from allsectors and all regions) have analyzed the needs and rede-fined the logistics and layout of the fair, to meet therequirements of all the operators and to optimize eachresource.

The protagonistsAnton Francesco Albertoni, Ucina President: "This formulawas adopted after having collected the needs of businesses, more and more attentive to a more complete, morestreamlined, interactive salon which responds to the currentmarket demand."Marina Stella, Ucina General Manager: "It is vital to appraisethe areas in the water and so we worked for a layoutdesigned to give more space in this direction and to give thevisitor a direct contact with the boat."Antonio Bruzzone, Genova Fair CEO: "We have created anadditional parking for 200 cars inside the Fair for exhibitorsand 4 new dining areas. There will be also an online ticketoffice which provides the purchase of the entrance to thesalon at a reduced price of 12 euro. "Sara Armella, Genova Fair President, "The Salone Nautico2013 will be very different from those that preceded it. Whatwe propose this year is an advanced formula of event, starting from its container, entirely revised, which will invite anew way to visit and use it. "

The areas on the ground have been linkedwith the marina moorings to offer the visitora guided "emotional" tour through all

the exhibition halls.

Genova 2013Events

The first major change concerns the duration of the show:five days. In this way, with a concentrated influx of visitors,it is easier to manage the staff attendance at the booth andto optimize the economic commitment. There has also been an architectural intervention that givesmore impact and style to the whole exhibition area and thatinvolves the entire fair industry. In this way it is possible toenhance the products making the visit more exciting, immersed in a setting that accompanies the visitors as theymove on land and at sea. This layout is banking on hisaquatic vocation and gives visitors an insight to the cultureof boating, creating the conditions for the revival of theindustry.

The unique style of an exhibition remains so important that

evolves in the use of space and settings.

Today more than ever, in fact, the Genoa event is a uniqueopportunity of confrontation with a real market: it is throughthe dialogue with visitors and the observation of competi-tors that products, in line with customer requirements, canbe delivered. Engaging the audience will be a must and forthis reason the marine environment of the fair will beexploited and expanded to give the opportunity to test theboats in their natural environment. It will be an interactiveand complete experience for the visitors and the opportu-nity to enhance the products of the shipyards. "Being ableto carry out sea trials for all the boats at the Show is a veryimportant value not only for the business of the companiesbut also to give the visitor the excitement of going to sea.For too long the boating sector has been associated withthe concept of unattainable luxury, while the products ondisplay are the result of our passion and feelings that onlythe navigation can give, "says Peter Vassena of BrunswickGroup and Ucina vice president.

The GenovaInBlu initiative reconfirmsitself, an event in the city to know and

appreciate the artistic, cultural and commercialcenter of Genoa to everyone, visitors, guestsand citizens.

A concrete rationalization of space stand offers more linear booths, ensuring visibility to the products that are the real stars of the

event and at the same time, allows a reduced investment for the companies.

«The economy ofour country has

It is our duty,of the producers, to findsolutions thatencourage customersto start to navigateagain and the GenoaBoat Show has thefeatures to presentthem at thebest», MassimoPerotti, Sanlorenzo Spa

«The briefformula meets

the needs ofcompanies: on onehand it allows aconsiderablesaving, on the otherhand it does not affectthe effectiveness ofthe fair as afundamental momentof business. They willbe very intense daysof work and we willbe pushed to do ourbest in everymoment», LambertoTacoli, Crn-FerrettiGroup.

t hasn’t always been smooth sailing, bringing the Hemisphere from the draw-ing board to the launching harbor. Herowner had spent a long time searching for just theright yacht for him and his family and over the yearshad rented many different boats, both sailboats andmotor yachts, until he felt he had an excellent idea ofjust what kind of vessel he was looking for. Initially, hewanted a 35-meter catamaran so it seemed obviousthat the choice would have fallen on the two award-winning designers, Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost,

based on their many years of experience in designing cata-marans (about 240 from 1984 to date!), including the BMWOracle, winner of the America’s Cup, and the 41-meterDouce France, just to name a couple.

A bit of historyConstruction began on the Hemisphere in the USA at theend of 2005, with a projected delivery date in 2007, butDerektor shipyard had some financial troubles that sloweddown production, eventually forcing the owner to considertransporting the two large aluminum hulls to another sitewhere they could be integrated into what, at 44 meters, wasto become the largest sailing catamaran in the world. In fact,as the project developed, its dimensions also increased, eventhough it never exceeded 500 tons. After a long and carefulselection process, the British shipyard, Pendennis, was cho-sen to complete construction. The yacht was moved to Fal-mouth, in Cornwall, in 2009 and a couple of years later madeher triumphant debut at the Munich Boat Show. The longwait and the owner’s patience finally paid off.

The designLet’s examine the main points upon which the two architectshinged this impressive project: the owner, an impassionedscuba diver who loves organizing group dives, requested atender large enough to carry all the members of a divingparty to the site of the dive at the same time, while the bigcatamaran had to be both elegant and sleek. Fitting a largetender into a sleek container is no easy feat. It requiredincreasing the size of the catamaran. After examining a num-ber of proposed solutions through 3-D simulations, the bestspot for storing the tender turned out to be in the stern, where a seagull-wing structure connects the two big hulls. This structure, which had been developed to solve sometechnical issues, turned out to be perfect for holding a ten-der over 8 meters long with its relative towing and launchingequipment. Two big doors open downward, like the trap-doors of a bomber, allowing the C-Quip davit to lower acapacious 8.30 meter Scorpion inflatable dinghy into thewater between the twin hulls. A complex engineering solu-tion: a suspended garage, designed by the experts at BmtNigel Gee Ltd. Mission accomplished!

The starboard hull is dedicated to service areas and housingfor a seven/eight member crew: it has three crew cabins plusthe captain’s quarters, a comfortable dinette and laundryrooms. Accessible from outside, this hull also houses a well-appointed galley linked to the grand salon by means of aninside stairway. The architects managed to create a rationalpuzzle, fitting in all the technical and storage areas for divingequipment, a windsurf, a kayak, a Seabob and water skis aswell as a garage holding the service tender, a 4.5-meter Cas-toldi dinghy. The portside hull also holds all the diving gearincluding a vast quantity of wetsuits, fins and tanks as wellas two compressors.

Technical data A 58-meter mast dominates the panoramic flybridge, a sun-bather’s paradise, which also houses two exterior helm sta-tions. The pilot station, located in the saloon on the maindeck, is equipped with a convenient console replete withmonitor, commands and chart table. Sailing performancewas not a key priority requested of the project, but thedesigners took care of this aspect as well, with a mainsail/jibratio similar to that used for racing catamarans. Under idealwind conditions, she can maintain 20 knots, while guaran-teeing a smooth ride for les sport-minded passengers. Thetotal surface area of the mainsail and jib is 856 sq m, with thegennaker bringing the total up to 1712 sq m. The mast ismade of carbon, there are no crosstrees and the stays aremade of kevlar. Motor propulsion is provided by twin, 490 hp Caterpillar C12engines. The ship’s three generators, with a total capacity of251 kW, are also made by Caterpillar. The Hemisphere alsohas another tender, a 16-meter fishing boat, outfitted forsport fishing. At the helm, advisor and representative of the owner duringthe Hemisphere’s construction, is Gavin Bladen, who isalready sailing her through the South Seas this summer. The catamaran, through rental agent Burgess, is availablefrom mid-August in French Polynesia (where she will remainuntil mid-2014) for 245 thousand dollars a week…but youcan dream about it for free!

ith its Vintage series, Code-casa dips back in time, revi-siting and reinterpreting the styles andfashions of yachting’s glory days, the20s and 30s, when aristocrats andtycoons berthed their luxurious plea-sure craft in the marinas of Capri,Portofino, Montecarlo, Saint-Tropezwhen they were still exclusive and hadnot yet become meccas of masstourism. The name itself of the series is

a clear indication of the company’s intent to play on our fasci-nation with the atmosphere of yesteryear. The first yacht in the series introduced by the Tuscan shipyard(from Viareggio), a harmonious, 42-meter model, was applaud-ed at its debut at the 2011 Munich Boat Show while a secondspecimen is slated to be launched shortly. The lines are under-stated and almost austere with just that touch of ostentationtypical of yachts of the era. The hull and superstructure’s navy-and-white color scheme emphasizes its sobriety. Externally, the yacht has a compact look, with high gun-wales, particularly at the prow, and tight superstructure vo-lumes. The vertical prow, designed to cut through thewaves with determination, blends harmoniously with thedesign of the stern, just slightly oblique, giving her aremarkable overall look of stately beauty. With her balanceof forms and volumes and her clean lines, the 42 Vintage

truly give the impression of being larger than her 42.5meters.

Exteriors and interiorsThe yacht is laid out on three decks plus a sundeck which, while not large, is perfectly appointed for taking in the view whileenjoying the open air. There are two indoor areas dedicatedto entertaining, one on the main deck and another on the upperdeck, both furnished with living and dining rooms. The maindeck sports a round table, shaded by the overhang of theupper deck, surrounded by comfy chairs with a large sofa si-tuated aft. A pair of symmetrical ladders leads from the cockpitto the bathing platform at the stern.

HistoryFew shipyards can boast a history, and especially aconsolidated family tradition, as long as Codecasa’s.Evidence of master shipwright Giovanni Battista Codecasa’sactivity in Viareggio was documented as long ago as 1825.The shipyard itself was constituted at the turn of the century,in 1902, when Giovan Battista Codecasa, descendant of along line of shipwrights, decided to set up his own company.Just a few years later, his was to become a highly-renownedshipyard. Generation after generation, the Codecasas havecontinued this family tradition. Since the early 1970s, FulvioCodecasa, flanked by his daughters and sons-in-law, hasbeen at the company’s helm: a company characterized by itsseriousness and reserve, by its capacity to incorporateinnovation into its products without compromising therecognizable style and elegance that have always madeCodecasa yachts outstanding.

Codecasa winks at the eye to thetradition, and it is able to propose a design

in balance between suggestions ofthe past and contemporary solutions.

On the upper deck the exteriors have been divided intotwo complementary zones: a dining area adjacent to anindoor saloon and a sea-facing terrace aft, graced withcomfortable sunbeds. Portside, a tender and its davit non-chalantly left in plain sight further recall a bygone atmos-phere, while an additional tender is stored, in accordancewith modern usage, in the large stern garage. A gangwayleads from the terrace all the way around the perimeter ofthe deck, passing in front of the lateral wheelhouses, whichprovide two external steering positions. These models havenot been designed with pools or hot tubs, but the shipyardcan accommodate owners’ customization requests toinclude them. The interior layout is classic with the great saloon on themain deck flanked by a generous L-shaped galley, whilethere is a small lobby starboard with stairs leading to the

upper and lower decks. All the passageways on each deckhave been kept quite narrow in favor of larger spaces avai-lable for the living and sleeping areas, although there areindependent passageways and stairways for guests andcrew to access their quarters. The large master suite, fea-turing a double dressing room and double bathroom, islocated forward on the main deck. Four guest cabins, twodouble and two twin, each of course with in-suite facilities, are instead situated below decks. Even the crew receive white glove treatment: large twin cabins,a galley and dinette and a service area replete with fridge, freez-er and washing machine take up a generous portion of the for-ward part of the lower deck. Returning upstairs, we find a dining room on the upper deckserved by a large pantry and, forward, a modern wheelhouseequipped with state-of-the-art navigational instrumentation.

The Group owns four shipyards in Viareggio and has alsorecently inaugurated a new manufacturing structure in theNavicelli area of Pisa. Two of the shipyards in Viareggio,Cantieri Navali Ugo Codecasa Spa and Codecasa Tre Spa,each cover over 7000 square meters, 6000 of which areindoor. These are dedicated to the construction of vessels upto 90 meters in length. A third structure, Codecasa Due,located in Darsena Toscana, one of the oldest in the city, iswhere the hundred-year-old tradition of the companydeveloped. Currently it is mostly used for maintenance andrefitting services, but the Ognitempo motorboats thatCodecasa produces for the Italian Coast Guard are alsomade there.

Codecasa Shipyards

The fourth manufacturing area in Viareggio is known asDR11 and is situated in the city’s new industrial zone.Covering over 1000 square meters (of which over 2/3 isindoor), it sees the construction of the 30 to 40-meter-long,high-performance open yacht series, made entitrely inaluminum. In the Navicelli industrial area, laid out along the impressivework of hydraulic engineering built between 1563 and 1575linking Pisa to the port of Livorno, stands the largest andmost recent of the company’s yards. Covering 25,000 squaremeters, with vast open areas and four enormous specially-equipped warehouses, the yard is designed to produceyachts of up to 80 meters.

FurnitureThe interior design is in perfect harmony with the exterior lines:a classically nautical style permeated by understated luxuryexpressed by the choice of materials and subtle touches ofclass. Franco and Anna Maria Della Role, Codecasa’s “histori-cal” architects, have taken their cue in designing the interiorsfrom the glamorous style reminiscent of cottages at the Hamp-ton’s, that Long Island sea-side location glorified in so manyHollywood films. The white, main saloon embraces a lovely bar on the right fac-ing a conversation area comprising a large, L-shaped sofaupholstered in navy and white striped fabric served by a dark, hardwood, colonial-style coffee table. The back of the room hasa more formal living room with a C-shaped sofa in light-coloredcapitonée leather, with a similar coffee table. The master suite is very comfortable and sophisticated, with itscarefully selected fabrics: a white bedspread with beige bro-cade and scarlet cushions. The red loveseat starboard and thedesk/vanity chair on the opposite side liven up the room. Bothmaster baths are also in white. They share a common shower, trimmed in white Carrara marble and adorned with large, beveled mirrors.

Production and projects

Codecasa brand is known for exclusive, custom-made, displacement, steel-and-aluminum yachts and open speedboats in aluminum alloys. Among its clienteleare some of the most influential individuals in the world, including top names in

fashion. Giorgio Armani has owned the Mariù and more recently the 65-m Main, whileDolce & Gabbana have been seen with their 51-meter Regina d’Italia in all the trendiestplaces. The Tuscan company is currently building a second model in the Codecasa 42 Vintageseries (constr. F 75), slated to be launched next summer, and will proceed with theconstruction of another in the Vintage fleet, a 50-meter model, set to be delivered inthe spring of 2015.At the same time, at the yards in Navicelli, Codecasa is working on the first in a series of openCodecasa 50s, continuing the line that already includes models of 35, 41 and 45 meters. Thismodel, totally constructed in light metal alloys based on a design by Andrea Bacigalupo, willbe ready in the summer of 2013.Other projects currently being defined by the company’s technical department include themajestic Codecasa 72 and a new version of the Codecasa 65.

Performance and enginesThe Codecasa 42 Vintage was not designed to be a rac-ing yacht. On the contrary, it is meant to be truly a pleas-ure vessel, dedicated to those who wish to travel long dis-tances in great comfort, relaxation and safety. With a high-ly-resistant stainless steel hull, its superstructure is insteadmade of 5083 H321 aluminum, with a 400-ton displace-ment when fully loaded. The engine room, consistent withthe general configuration of the yacht, hosts two toughCaterpillar 3512C engines that reach 1230 kW of power(1650 hp at 1800 rpm) and can take the boat up to speedsof 17 knots. The fuel tank has a 77,000 liter capacity andat cruising speeds of 11 knots, is autonomous for transa-tlantic voyages.

t is simplicity that is difficult tomake,” according to BertoltBrecht. This same concept must have beenat the heart of Philippe Briand’s thinking whenhe set his team of architects at Jeanneau todesign the Sun Odyssey 469. How to makethe best use of space on board? Simple: put-ting everything as aftward as possible. How?First of all by bringing the two ship’s wheelscloser to the transom. The designers man-aged this by eliminating the pilots’ seats, butthis doesn’t mean that you have to remainstanding to pilot the 469, just that the seats

don’t take up the entire transom beam width. The seats areL-shaped and nestled into the corners of the stern. No“hunchback” or bench and therefore no added volume tak-ing away from the space available for the cockpit. The sternsports only a transom hatch that can be opened out, becoming an ample bathing platform. Wheels, instrumentconsole and handrails are located externally aft, allowing fora very roomy, uncluttered cockpit. It measures 300 x 180square centimeters, which is a lot for a craft only 13.65meters long. Limiting the pilots’ seats to two corner bench-es not occupying the entire beam offers three other advan-tages. It makes descending belowdecks less steep thanusual. It makes for a roomier dinette, allowing the ladder tobe placed at a wider angle. This means the descent is gen-tler and easier. The second advantage is that the unclutteredcockpit allows for more room in the two aft cabins. Usuallythese spaces have a catacomb effect, with the cockpit’ssuperstructure intruding into the sleeping areas, taking up

space and air. This is not the case with the Sun Odyssey469, since the two helm wheels are as far aft as possible. Finally, this set up allows you to store the sails in a sail lock-er located at the tip of the prow. The below deck layout con-centrates most elements aft, as well. The master cabin is bigenough without extending too far forward. The head of theberth is wider than the rest leaving forward space free forstowing sails, fenders, ropes and safety equipment.Another characteristic, written into the DNA of these mod-els, is their cruising propensity. The Sun Odissey 469’s deckis laid out for top maneuverability. Everything is concentrat-ed in the cockpit, including the jib carriage. Halyard andsheets run under the deckhouse superstructure and outsidethe cockpit. Everything is neatly stowed, allowing for moreaccessible living space. The mainsail traveler is in fact locat-ed forward of the companionway. The halyard winches arekept near the two wheels, allowing the helmsmen to regu-late them without disturbing the other passengers. The sternpulpit railings near the two helm wheels are particularly wellplaced. They are, of course, made of stainless steel and theirdesign recalls the look of the wheels themselves, just tencentimeters forward of them. This means there is alwayssomething solid handy to grab hold of, while at the sametime keeping the structure light, vistas clear and onboardmovements unobstructed. There are other details that affirm the basic philosophybehind the boat designers’ choices. There is no door toclose the entryway to the cabins below deck, or, more pre-cisely there are two transparent folding doors that do nottake precious space away from the cockpit. Traditionally, thehatch was stowed in a locker, but every time you had to

111To gain onboard space, all fittings have been set as far aft as possible, with the wheels very near

the transom.leave the boat, it ended up buried under mooring lines, lifesavers, fenders and so forth making it difficult to get to. Alsodesigned to save space, the jib carriages are located in thepilot house and do not block the gangway. Should a jib bechosen which is larger by 140%, it will of course need to bepositioned on the gangways. Even though space and comfort are universally appreciated, each sailing enthusiast has his own particular demands. Pro-viding options for customizing, therefore, is essential. Start-ing with the sails, the range is decidedly vast. There are thestandard Dacron sails, of course, but you can also orderhigh-performance sails that are geometrically the same, butmade of taffeta, which is a lighter and more efficient fabric. The mainsail is available in a furling model, which reducesthe cloth to just a few meters. Various sizes of jibs are alsoavailable. In addition to the standard 106%, there is a 140%model and a self-winding flake smaller than standard. Thereis also the Code 0 option, a prow sail that can be used inwinds between 4 and 12 knots. It is ideally used with a106% jib. It makes less sense to use it with a 140%. What’sreally nice about the Code 0, besides the vast surface of thesail itself and that you can use it with jibs measuringbetween 60° and 120°, is that it comes with a closed-circuitfurling system leading back to the cockpit. It is directlyattached to the stemhead with a snaphook and so is acinch to roll up. The same way of thinking holds truebelowdecks. To meet any sailor’s possible needs, there arethree different layout options. Livability is optimum in everyroom but what impressed us most was the amount of light:

In addition to the model we tested, the “private” version with threecabins and two heads, the Sun Odyssey 469 is available with two

other layouts: with three cabins and three heads or a charter modelwith four cabins and four heads.

113there are plenty of windows, transparent hatches and port-

This means thatwhether you are sitting on a seat, a couchor a bunk, the lower windows are at eyelevel so that there is always a view.Whether you are seated or standing, while you are sailing you can always seethe wake flowing. And how much does it flow? We tried outthe Sun Odyssey 469 on a day with very little breeze. Thewind was only at about 10 knots, which was actually a goodthing, because it’s important to verify that the boat isn’t justa “dead weight” in the doldrums. A cruising sailboat does-n’t have huge sails but does carry quite a bit of weight (justthink of the water tank that holds more than 600 liters). Thesails on the model we tried were rigged for performance, therefore were made of taffeta rather than Dacron. The 469is no “dead weight.” Even with hardly any wind, she per-forms well. We particularly appreciated the Code 0. Sailingclose hauled, we got up to 9.4 knots. The sail was reallyeasy to use thanks to the furler and the commands riggedback to the cockpit. We also really liked the helmsmen’sseating. As we said, this does not consist of a single ele-ment running beam-width along the stern, but two cornerunits. They are quite comfortable and allow unobstructedviews of the sails and the prow. The performance of the

ere’s a great example of how a cri-sis can pave the way for an oppor-tunity, just as Einstein said. With this in mind,Jupiter considers the nautical industry particu-larly ripe with opportunity and, with Second LifeTop Yachts, intends to transform a niche sectorinto a concrete market necessity. The programwas formed to evaluate, manage and handlethe entire sales process of nautical merchandiseresulting from repossessed leased items whose

payments are delinquent, overdue or expired, guaranteeing fullyintegrated services, following the entire negotiation processthrough each successive phase. Their activity is supported by amodern, user-friendly web portal (www.secondlifetopyachts.it),accessible to registered members. The brand, launched in 2012 by Jupiter, a subsidiary of the CervedGroup and a major name in the field of programs for the man-agement of difficult credit, has already become a top player on aninternational level in the field of used nautical equipment and boats. Their success is verified by the number of vessels they have sold:in 2012, 66 boats were sold in15 different countries around theworld. This year that number is destined to increase, seeing thatSecond Life Top Yachts has greatly invested in increasing their vis-ibility in affiliated marinas, like the one in Rome, where an Assilea-

HStrong points• Quicker and higher values for resale of boats.

• Lower management costs (important partnerships with reliable dealers and eight marinas, asignificant number of boats being handled, giving our business partners a high enough volume ofwork to allow large-scale savings, commission-propelled incentives to assure maximum salesperformance in ratio to management costs).• Reliability and high service quality (well-prepared team, quick and streamlined sales process -there is an agent on call at the marina for each boat, flanked by a technical reference person inthe home office – clear and honest information about the boat’s condition and the company’sactivity).• Commercial network of carefully selected and highly-competent Italian and internationalbrokers.

sponsored convention was held. The convention examined ques-tions posed by the nautical market, with Assilea aiming to attractfuture clients and consolidate its identity. “The economic crisis has made this a particularly strategic sector,”according to Andrea Mignanelli, CEO at Jupiter, “and an increas-ing number of ‘problem’ boats means that ours has become ahighly professional and rapidly growing market. One of our goalsthis year is to increase the number of boats available by directlyinvolving private individuals.”In charge of the nautical division at Second Life Top Yacht is Mil-vio Ricci. We asked him to tell us something about the market andthe company’s development. How do you think these first 18 months of activity havebeen? This year and a half has gone very well, with many of our expec-tations and objectives being reached. The kind of work to be donechanged along the way from what we had predicted, but positiveresults quickly followed. At the beginning, we planned to dealexclusively with banks, but the platform soon lent itself to workingwith shipyards and private individuals. Cerved Group is a consol-idated name in the business, and together with Jupiter we havebeen able to move forward confidently. In 16 months we handledover 100 boats. Last year we closed 66 deals and so far this yearwe have already managed more than 40. My personal goal is toreach 100 by the end of 2013.

It is a three-step process.1.Repossession: location, repossession, transport.2.Restoration: berthing, refitting, storage.3.Resale: appraisal, remarketing, post-sales.Cerved Group business information know-how reinforces all three steps, matching the wealth ofeconomic information at their disposal with Jupiter’s expertise in the field of credit risk management. The marriage of these skills is the answer to a growing demand on the part of banks, financialinstitutions, companies and individuals for a more complete, integrated risk management system.

The Assilea conventionSecond Life Top Yachts organized the second annual

Assilea-sponsored convention, at the port of Rome, to discussthe current state of affairs in the nautical industry. Marketprojections were examined, with a particular emphasis on theresale of used boats. To relaunch the used boat market in Italy, the new closed registry procedures and the state of the art forsingle-registry for pleasure boats were also discussed. Therewere also in-depth discussions about insurance and what kindof coverage is best for fleets and for individual boats. For theoccasion over 20 boats, from 12 to 25 meters, from both Italianand foreign boat builders, were opened up to visitors. Amongthese was the Don Quijote, a 17-meter sailboat built in 1953that belonged to Eva Peron.Representatives from sector associations who participatedincluded managing director of Assilea, Gianluca De Candia, and Roberto Neglia, in charge of institution relations for Ucina,Eugenio Caropresi, coordinating officer for AssicurazioniGenerali and, representing governmental institutions, MiriamNardelli, from the Infrastructure and Transport Ministry.

Does this mean that you think that the market is not dead, but that it just depends on what you have to offer and howyou offer it?Exactly. It depends on what kind if guarantees you can offer yourclients. Unfortunately in Italy we are accustomed to “shooting our-selves in the foot,” practically boasting about our liabilities, insteadof focusing on the assets of our creativity combined with our manyskills. Our company is proud to be Italian. We introduce ourselvesas such and proudly flaunt our origins. Do you only deal in boats that have been repossessed by thebanks?Primarily, yes. Our company was born by acquiring this branch ofbusiness which supplied us with our initial portfolio. We continuedto grow and are now working with 10 or 12 different banks. Since banks don’t really know much about managing boats, there has been some risk of their depreciating due to lack ofproper upkeep. Has this problem been addressed? We are talking about short-term turnover and we have dealt withthe problem. We analyze what maintenance work needs to bedone for each boat and carry out the most urgent to maintain itsvalue.

The platform has eight marinas, whichguarantee the uniqueness of a boat

show open all year round. Each partner isselected based on the quality of the serviceand on the convenience of cha rges.

Are you working only with banking institutions? No, in the sense that, while the bulk of our clients effectively arebanks, we have extended our services to include shipyards, pri-vate customers and businesses. What sets you apart? Our approach to the nautical industry is completely novel. Yearsago I had drifted away from this sector because I wasn’t find-ing it stimulating, but with Second Life Top Yacht I decided toget back into it because it provides the right prospective and Ihave been able to offer the company the expertise that I haveacquired in my many years of past experience.

The platform provides the marketing of a safe and sales

standards product certified by Myba (Mediterranean yacht

brokers association), boasting a sales network of highly

selected Italian and international brokers.

Nowadays we know that we are dealing with trustworthy clientswho simply do not have economic difficulties and who, similar-ly, know that they can feel safe with us. What kind of products are we talking about? We currently have about 120 boats of all sizes from 11 metersup in our portfolio. Before putting them up for sale, we servicethem, estimate their value based on current market values, with-out undervaluing them, while remaining more competitive thanothers on the market. I have worked in the shipbuilding busi-ness so I am aware of the issues that a yard faces for the con-struction of each individual vessel - the value, the difficulties, thecommitment involved – so I know that they should be sold atfair prices.

It's the single point of contact forthe leasing company, which is the

client, and it is ultimately responsible for thequality, able to offer a complete service onthe entire business management and resaleof boats.
