Barcelona is more than just a hip mediterranean tourist destination, it carries ambitious goals to become one of Europe’s greenest cities by 2020. The Barcelona Energy Agency are currently working on 18 projects around the city in the energym climate change and air quality sector. The aim is to reduce energy consumptionand CO2 emmisions.
Wireless LED Lamps
Endesa, a spanish energy firm installed wirelessly controlles LED street lamps that use
timers and motion detectors to save enrgy. Barcelona xpects its municipal power bill to
decrease by one thirs due to the timers.
Solar Energy
The city recquires solar panels to be fitted to all large buildings. It’s objectice is for the building to heat up 60% of their own hot water. This solar array is eurpoes largest solar panel. Ot produces energy for the public sector helping reduce the city’s carbon emissions by 440 tonnes.
Barcelona Airport
A spanish architect designed a sword shaped structure for the terminal that is iluminated with natural daylight achieved through floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The terminal also features hundreds of solar panels integrated on the aluminum roof.
Green Bikesa "Green" company for bike rentals, helping
the environment by encouraging alternative, safe and healthy modes of transportation.. Green bikes uses recyclable materials to make their bikes.
Hydrogen Buses

Wind Power Barcelona is building Segrera Linear Park, a slim garden strip slicing through the city. covering around 40 hectars of land,
considered a “green lung” for the city.
RecyclingLike many areas of Spain, Barcelona operates a recycling scheme throughout the city and much of this is composted – the waste recycling bins can be found dotted liberally throughout Barcelona and are colour-coded, green for glass, yellow for un-perishables such as plastics and brown for general waste.
Organic FoodsThere is a plethora of options open to the ecotourist, vegan or vegetarian and organic restaurants decorate the city. Organic local markets are all over Barcelona.
