PARK GÜELL was designed by Antoni Gaudí, the greatest exponent of Catalan modernism, commissioned by businessman Eusebi Güell. Built between 1900 -1914, was opened as a public park in 1922. Unesco included the Güell Park a World Heritage Site within the Humanidad.El Park Güell is a reflection of the artistic fullness of Gaudi is in its early twentieth century naturalist first, a period in which the architect perfected his personal style, inspired by the organic forms of nature

The initial project was to build an exemplary luxury development on the outskirts of Barcelona. This magnificent garden city was planned for 60 houses. Although Gaudí turned in this work, once again, his prodigious imagination, the project was a resounding commercial failure. Only two plots were sold. Due to this lack of acceptance, years later, this area became a public park in Barcelona.

The park covers an area of 17.18 hectares. The design clearly shows the hand of a great architect, and the peculiar style of Gaudí is evident in every element, however small..

Eusebi Güell bought a large estate in the "Bald Mountain" in Gracia. He wanted to build a City

Create a residential development in an area almost free of vegetation for that reason was called "Montaña Pelada" very hilly, stony and devoid of natural sources, like a work impossible at that time. Gaudí resolved one by one, all problems presented to him, from the collection of rainwater to use for building slopes winding roads. In the park there are many other details that Gaudi's work can be seen strolling through the park's trails, while enjoying a Mediterranean garden.

The main entrance shows two administrative buildings built in stone, Catalan vaulted roof covered "trencadis" (coating of surfaces with irregular mosaic fragments, which was then widely used in Modernism. Both roofs are surmounted by domes resembling tiny original the form of a mushroom, the pavilion on the left also shows a stylized tower crowned by a cross of four arms so typical of Gaudí.

The two houses on either side of the entrance, Gaudi, giving free rein to his fantasy was inspired by the story of Hansel and Gretel for your design. On the right is the witch, crowned by an enormous toadstool, and the left, the children, with their typical Gaudi double cross on the roof.

The pavilion at the entrance of the park, and intended to lodge, built with stones from the same place, covered on top with mosaics. The color of this cover was chosen taking into account the chromaticism of the environment. The irregular shapes of the roof seem to remember the scales and roughness of a strange monster. This small building looks out of a fairy tale.

A long winding bench Gaudí designed as is, close to the surface boundaries of the square. For the construction of this bank, as well as other decorative elements of his work, Gaudí was the most outstanding collaboration of Josep M. Jujol, also an architect

Page 58: BARCELONA 51 PARK GÜELL - ENGLISH

The square is enclosed by a balustrade bench covered with trencadís sinuous lines of different colors and meanings. An array that holds, in the eyes of the world, not yet passed a socket between nature and man in a space where they fuse all forms of architecture and urban planning in a renovated Mediterranean garden concept could not be imitated anywhere

Gaudí conceived with a religious meaning while organic and urban development, taking advantage of the gap of 60 meters which is the mountain (the height between 150 and 210 meters over the sea) to project a path of spiritual elevation, placing in its summit a chapel, which was never built, the site now occupied by the monument of Calvary or the TURÓ OF THREE CRUCES. Éste is the highest part of the park, from here you can see most of Barcelona. Currently there are three crosses on a hill of stone, named Calvary. Two of them point to the cardinal points (NSEW), and the other pointing toward the sky.

Page 68: BARCELONA 51 PARK GÜELL - ENGLISH

The entire garden is served by unpaved roads or footpaths, many of which are supported by inclined columns. Walking along these paths is an extraordinary pleasure, allowing you to enjoy nature while you can see every detail of this exceptional work.

Page 69: BARCELONA 51 PARK GÜELL - ENGLISH

Gaudí made complicated surveying for the layout of the streets, complex jobs since the slopes of the mountain and the fact that Gaudí wanted to keep the dry look the same in his work.

Page 70: BARCELONA 51 PARK GÜELL - ENGLISH

But planting trees not only respected the environment, to be the topographic map of the fifteen acres, noted that, given the terrain, the roads to take many cuttings and embankments that would spoil the beauty of the landscape, so he designed the twisting streets that followed the soil profile..

Page 71: BARCELONA 51 PARK GÜELL - ENGLISH
Page 72: BARCELONA 51 PARK GÜELL - ENGLISH

The architect had just designing a large garden, full of fantasy, paths, trails and roads that seem to reflect a utopian vision of paradise lost. Within the enclosure of the park, a forest of oaks, pines, Baladres, etc

Page 73: BARCELONA 51 PARK GÜELL - ENGLISH

These streets hold some bent over with soul columns of brick covered with natural stone instead. In total there are about three kilometers of roads with a slope of 6% for roads of cars and up to 12% for pedestrians This, fortunately, led to, instead of a large urban

Even nature seems to be in the background, it is true that the architect had in mind for a perfect symbiosis between the stone and green. The prospect of the viaduct, crowned with palm trees and lined with shrubs and ground cover plants plasma either the complicity between nature and architecture

Gaudí preserve the natural vegetation of the place that today is an area of forest with abundant mesquite, oaks, pines and oaks, surrounded by a thick undergrowth.
