Lighting Up Rotary – this time in Glens Falls!
We are really looking forward to a great month as February brings us many great events!!! On Saturday, Feb 28 we will be showcasing our clubs as Rotarians take to the Glens Falls Civic Center for an Adirondack Flames hockey game. It will a really fun day and we hope Rotarians bring their family and friends to the event! Need you to be inviting your friends, colleagues, and local business owners to attend clubs events! When you have someone that may be interested in becoming a member, make sure their first experience is a fun one… Invite them first to an event! If you’re not hosting a club event in the near future, attend an event at another area Rotary Club. Make a point of alerting your club members that a prospective member will be attending and share your “Rotary moments” – your stories for why you joined, and what keeps you energized. We have such a great organization and feel such a great feeling of accomplishment as we truly make a difference. Share that energy and you’ll find a new member! After you attend an event, follow it up within 2 weeks with another engaging experience – consider hosting a social event and invite prospective members. If you’re a smaller club, reach out to other nearby clubs and either consider a joint event – or ask some fellow Rotarians to help out and attend… Make sure that you have a good showing! Your District leadership team is really excited about the upcoming District Conference – where we’ll be showcasing the rebirth of the Schoharie Valley and lending a hand to help out with a day of service…. Keep watching our District website and our Facebook page as we build energy and excitement for a memorable Conference weekend!
Thank you again for all that you do as members of Rotary. The world is a better place because of YOU!

Can you come up with a logo that would make our district distinctive and represents our geographic location?
Submit your idea and if it wins you (or someone of your choice) will receive a Paul Harris. Submit your entry to [email protected] by February 1, 2015.
A winner will be announced at the District Training Assembly to be held on 11 Apr 2015. Good luck. Milan

NISKAYUNA ROTARY presents ‘THANK YOU GIFTS’ to You
Niskayuna Rotary wants to thank the many clubs and individuals who supported our 12-Days of Christmas Raffle, including Albany, Colonie-Guilderland, Delmar, Hudson Falls, Glens Falls, Glenville, Lake George, Malta Sunrise, Middleburgh, Scotia and Twin Bridges among others. Rotarians were generous everywhere. The $1000 raised is dedicated for helping youth. As Thank You gifts, here are a couple of tools / ideas for you to implement:
Free computers and laptops are available for Rotary projects via ComputerRehab.org (or $9 each with Microsoft Windows or $18 with Microsoft Office.)
Consider sponsoring a campership to enable a few more boys to attend Camp Rotary in Averill Park. Contact the Director of Camping Services, Twin Rivers Council, BSA, (518) 869-6436. For photos, visit www.rsrbsa.org. Camp costs $320, but partial camperships are welcome.
The Rotary Club of Ballston Spa drives a pickup truck around during their community-wide garage sale and asks for donations of children’s books. Then they visit the schools where every child gets to select a book of their very own.
Niskayuna has a special thank you for Ballston Spa because Ballston Spa gladly provided over 50 books so we could deliver them to Lincoln School in Schenectady. THANK YOU!!!! “Rotary Connects People who want to Serve.”

So, What is a “Chicken Plunge?”
Warm-blooded District 7190 Rotarians look on in awe each year as dedicated stalwarts, led by our District Polio Plus Chair Anne Cargile, participate in the January 1st Lake George Polar Plunge.Unquestionably, this is a highly selfless act done to focus attention on Rotary’s campaign to eradicate Polio, and to encourage the greatest possible support for this effort through Rotary’s Polio Plus.
Club President Ray Callanan and the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake (BHBL) Rotary Club put a slight twist on this year’s club annual Polio Plus fund raising effort. In the past, BHBL Rotary usually sent a representative, generally the President (last year Mike Brewster and his son in law Rotarian Jon Costolo) to the annual Polar Plunge. This year it was impossible for President Ray to participate. So, being the dedicated Rotarian he is, Ray came up with something different. Since he joined our club several years ago, President Ray has made it very clear – he hates chicken!!!! He doesn’t allow any in his home, he never eats it at meetings, and he never skips a chance to debase the innocent fowl. Members of the club have come to accept that Ray’s distaste or rather hatred of chicken is one of those quirks people might have… both he and the rest of us continually brought it up and kidded about it, and it became a common joke he and the rest of us shared.
And, now for the rest of the story…Realizing he could not participate in the Polar Plunge, yet still wanting to do something selfless to encourage club members to support Polio Plus, President Ray agreed to sacrifice himself on the alter of Polio Plus by agreeing to eat chicken at our January 5 meeting. Club members could not believe what they heard. This was clearly a seminal event the club could not take lightly. The build up for the event lasted for a couple of months. Our resident artistic genius, Gini Whetten, made signs encouraging the eating of chicken to fight polio, and subsequently decorated the meeting with creative chicken ornamentation. In preparation for the dinner, our musical leader, Bob Youmans, created the song “Ray Callanan’s Chicken Song,” sung to the tune of “Harrigan.” Our food coordinator, Laura Lee Linder, planned for, and prepared tasty appetizers, and, with our caterer Marcella's, a dinner menu with chicken elements
throughout. And, our chief woodworker Ken Crotty, built the “Chicken Plague” that Anne is pictured presenting to President Ray.
January 5th dawned cold, with a chance of snow. Would attendance at the “chicken meeting” be limited? No way! After the pledge and invocation, Bob led us in the Chicken Song, which was immediately following by a costumed turkey (Linda LeTendre) busting into the room stating that she was feed up with the abuse her species was subjected to during the holidays, so she personally delivered a chicken dinner to President Ray, who ceremoniously
Anne presents “Chicken Plaque” to Ray
took the “first Peck.” Following Happy Dollars, which were dedicated to Polio Plus, our “turkey” provided us numerous, hilarious political renditions of “why the chicken crossed the road.” Then, as “the chicken dance music” broke out a chicken costumed Gini Whetten came into the room, got everyone to their feet and we had a couple of minutes of laughable chicken dancing. Anne Cargile then provided us an interesting and moving presentation on the progress of polio eradication and her personal experiences administering the vaccine in Nigeria. The evening concluded by Anne presenting a mounted rubber chicken to President Ray in memoriam for his eating chicken to help eradicate Polio. A good time was had by all and, most importantly, club members donated 133% of the club’s goal for BHBL Rotary’s donation to Polio Plus this year.

Ballston Spa Rotary Extends Gratitude
We in Ballston Spa Rotary would like to thank our President, Pete Champagne, for being one of the many hardy participants in the recent Polio Plunge into Lake George. It takes a special constitution to endure that frigid water and Pete did a fine job representing our Club at this event. Our Club will be sponsoring another seminar this year. Our topic is "Ballston Spa: This is who we are". Our goal will be to provide an overview of current local issues, outline the resources and opportunities available, and introduce folks to the Community leaders while providing a relaxed forum to discuss their concerns. We're hoping it appeals not only to our local population but to others from around the area to learn more about OUR community. More details will follow. Ray
