Welcome to the 20th Anniversary of the Bar 3R Limousin Bull Sale. After a record breaking fall calf run the optimism of the beef industry is at an all time high. 500 lb steer calves topped $3.00 a pound on a regular basis. Cull cows were over $1.40 a pound and canner bulls were in the $1.30-$1.50 a pound range. All reports and predictions are for this to be the new norm for the years to come. Perhaps now producers can get paid for their labor and input costs. We feel we have another strong set of bulls on offer for our 20th Anniversary Sale. The bulls are managed with breeding longevity in mind. They are fed a high roughage, silage based ration and are on a total herd health program. All of the coming 2-year-olds are from our late spring calving group and have never been offered for sale before. All bulls are guaranteed virgin bulls and carry our personal guarantee, if you’re not satisfied, we’re not satisfied. We welcome your evaluation of the sale offering either at the farm or on sale day. If you are unable to attend the sale take advantage of our site unseen purchase program. Just call or come to the farm in advance so we can discuss your needs and develop a budget. As always, satisfaction is guaranteed. Once again this year, we offer to board your purchase until May 1, 2015, semen test and deliver for $100. We ask that all bulls to be boarded carry insurance. Talk to us for any further arrangements. A tremendous breed changer that we purchased in the spring of 2013. He was the Reserve Champion Canadian National Bull in 2012. This $24,000.00 homozygous polled phenom has huge scrotal, weaning, and yearling EPD’s. His calves are showing superior muscle and thickness. A very well balanced package that we are excited to have added to our bull battery. He is one of the most talked about bulls in the breed. Look for GREAT things from Titanium in the future. A homozygous polled Wulf’s Wagon Train son that we purchased as the high seller from Vaughn Farms in Cavalier, North Dakota. Young Gun has added muscle and overall thickness along with a noticeable improvement in docility. His sons are deep bodied and big topped and the females are showing very nice udder shape. Young Gun has left an impression already and we feel he will leave a huge impact in years to come.

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are used to compare the genetic merit of animals in various traits. An EPD pre-dicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents, when each are bred to mates of equal value.

Remember, the observed performance of an animal is de-termined by both genetics and environment, and EPDs only predict differences due to genes passed on from parent to offspring.

Birth Weight (BW)Birth weight has been identified as the single most influ- en-tial factor contributing to calving difficulty. In studies of birth weight data, birth weight EPDs have been shown to be the single most accurate genetic predictor of calf birth weight. BW is expressed in pounds of calf at birth and a lower num-ber is desirable.

Weaning Weight (WW) and Yearling Weight (YW)EPDs are expressed as the added pounds of weaning and yearling weight of offspring.

Milking Ability (MA)A sire’s milk EPD is expressed as the additional pounds of weaning weight of calves from daughters (grandprogeny of sire), due to genes for milk passed on from the sire to his daughters. Similarly, a dam’s milk EPD indicates add-ed pounds of weaning weight of calves from her daughters (grandprogeny of dam), due to genes for milk the daughters inherited from the dam.

Scrotal Circumference (SC)Scrotal circumference has been found to be a good indicator of age at puberty, and is a highly heritable trait. Expressed in centimeters with higher values indicating larger yearling scrotal circumference of sons.
