BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL

ALWAYS OPEN FOR PRAYER & ADORATION

While nearly all religious groups are declining in membership, Catholics are leaving the church in larger numbers. For every convert joining the church, six members are departing. Many people have simply stopped believing that they need the ministry of clergy in order to live in the Kingdom of God. This seems especially true of younger people who seem convinced that they can live decent lives by following their own consciences rather than depending on the things that are taught in church. Empty nest parents have been struggling for years to figure out why the kids they raised as good Catholics have left the faith. Most blame themselves as they honestly acknowledge that they may not have given a strong enough example of faith. While it is not the only reason, nor perhaps even the biggest one, the scandals created by the sexual abuse of minors by Catholic clergy and subsequent attempts to cover it up by bishops, have played a big role. This kind of horrific conduct by men who were supposed to be beyond this kind of criminal malice because of their ordinations threw many Catholics for a loop. They had so long since placed such a great focus on the mystical powers of priests to change bread and wine into the very Body and Blood of Christ, most had no reason to mistrust them. It is true that since these dreadful revelations emerged in 2002 and more recently, church leaders have taken measures—with the full insistence of attorneys and insurers—that have drastically reduced the incidence of abuse and coverup. But increasing numbers of Catholics have had their faith shaken in the notion that they can depend on the leadership of their pastors and bishops—especially in parishes and dioceses where media coverage of this issue has been intense. Is it too late for church leaders to regain credibility, or are there changes that could go far in restoring it? I believe there are changes that are worth exploring as part of a solution. The most important in my view is a change in church law which would empower laity—men and women-to be involved in decision making at every level. Right now bishops and priests may ask lay persons to be involved in boards, councils, and commissions but their opinions are only consultative. The clergy have the final word. Some would object that the church is not a democracy.

Also of great importance would be for church leaders at all levels to ask theologians to either develop ways to better defend controversial church beliefs or to acknowledge areas where the development of doctrine can emerge for the benefit of the whole church. Many Catholics insist there be better reasons for excluding women and same sex attracted people from roles of leadership and service in the church. Let me be clear, I am not advocating a sweeping reversal of strongly held Catholic beliefs, practices, and disciplines, but people have a right to demand explanations that go beyond “it’s true because we say it is.” Parents have known for a long time that arguments from authority are the ones most challenged by their offspring. Todays church going, faithful Catholics are the ones doing the challenging now. Oh, God, Come to our Assistance.

Changing The Church To Restore Credibility

New Year Provides New

Opportunities To Offer Service

We are still looking for an RN to serve as our Parish Nurse. This is a part-time position (make your own hours for the most part) for an individual who believes the healing arts include prayer and compassion for those suffering in hospital, at home, or in a residential center. Contact Caryl Prati for additional information.

We could use some help in the parish office. Answering phones, greeting office visitors, directing visitors and callers to a staff member who can help. Call or email Jane Mitchell: 818-6838 or [email protected]

We need occasional assistance from married couples willing to sponsor and mentor engaged couples. Call Fr. Jack at 799-5003 or email at [email protected]

I’m wondering who our next Parish Nurse will be at St. Andrew? Is Our God calling you? I have complete confidence in God; I simply do not know His timeframe. He called me 20 years ago to a most wonderful ministry when I had no clue what it meant. “Be not afraid”. Call Fr. Jack or Caryl if you think you have the slightest interest at all.

DOES GOD STILL HEAL TODAY?

Catholics have always been willing to pray for people in need of healing. We’re always happy to say a prayer for someone struggling with some form of suffering. But many church members seem unaware of the spiritual gift of healing that is given to some for the benefit of others. We have such individuals in our parish and they make themselves available in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel following the 5pm Mass on the Third Saturday of each month to pray with and over individuals in need of healing prayer—physical, spiritual, emotional, or relational. If you or someone you know has such a need, just go into the chapel following Mass and our prayer ministry team members will be happy to pray with you.

Our Sincere Condolences

We extend our sincere condolences to Bill and Jane Baltrush on the occasion of the death of her beloved mother, Jennie Veneziano.

Fr. Jack learned on Thursday of the tragic death of 15 year old Antonio Miguel Jugo, son of Frank & Analiese Jugo who now live in Michigan. He witnessed their wedding and baptized this boy. Please pray for Frank & Analiese and their daughter.

May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
