Welcome to the Pro Ambitions Hockey Program

Thank you for your interest in our program. The main purpose of the plan is to provide the coaches in

your organization with the most current, comprehensive, and easy to comprehend systems, drills, andpractice plans to maximize the development of their players.

The program is a synthesis of information based upon my experience as a player and a coach. Prior toplaying 800 professional games over a ten-year period including the Pittsburgh Penguins, I played at

Lawrence Academy and Providence College where I earned a BA in finance. During the past ten years

over 15,000 young players from town, travel, and metropolitan organizations have graduated from myPro Ambitions hockey program.

Tapping into some of hockeys greatest minds such as Joel Quenneville St. Louis Blues, MarcCrawford Vancouver Canucks, Kevin Constantine New Jersey Devils, Peter Laviolette New York

Islanders, and Bobby Orr during my 25 years in hockey, I have devised a comprehensive teaching tool

to maximize success for both coaches and players.

When your organization purchases my program, you are making a significant investment in the long-term success of your organization. It will enable you to transform an average organization into a grade

'A' powerhouse that will attract quality players and provide you with a vital competitive edge.

In general, kids are not learning the game quickly enough, usually as a result of disparate and inadequate

knowledge of the game and its training and skills techniques. For a relatively low cost per player, your

entire organization will have a tailored plan for every level (Mite thru Midget). I share many importantlessons and secrets learned over a long career.

I hope that you will feel free to speak to me personally about my program. The bottom line: it will make

your coaches and players better, and will ultimately make your organization extraordinary.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Jeff Serowik

    Parents Pledge

I will remember that my child plays hockey for his or her enjoyment, not mine. I agree that school should take precedence over hockey. I will never ridicule or yell at my child for making a mistake or losing a game. I will never yell, taunt, threaten or inflict physical violence upon any player, coach, official or

spectator at any youth hockey activity.

I will leave the coaching to the coaching staff. Encourage your child to play in a mannerconsistent with the teams strategy or plans.

I will support the whole team concept. I will communicate any and all concerns to the Team Manager and/or coach. I will remember that children learn by example. I will try to be honest about my players athletic capabilities Understanding that everyone has busy schedules, I will have my child at the rink early, so thatcoaches will have time beforehand to review team play, concepts and drills.

    IMPORTANT RULES AND PENALTIES

    OFF SIDES

Off Sides occurs when a player crosses the opposing teams blue line before the puck does. Players are

not allowed to cross into the other team's zone until the puck does. If the puck is dumped into the zone

while an offensive player is across the blue line players can come back over the blue and then go backinto the zone and chase the puck, al l players from the offensive team must be on the neutral side of the

blue line in order for this to happen. This is called tagging up. This is a very difficult rule to

understand, start off simple and tell your players not to enter the zone until the puck does, when they

understand this teach them how to tag up.

    ICING

Icing occurs when the puck is sent down the ice beyond the other team's goal line from a position behind

the red line. Players cannot send the puck behind the other teams goal line until they are over the red

line, however if they are killing a penalty they are allowed to do this. This is also difficult to understand

so teach players that they cannot dump the puck into the other teams end until they are over the red line. Most young players cannot send the puck that far however it is a good lesson to teach. Also, if the puck

is sent behind the other teams goal line from behind your red line and it is touched by the other team or

is capable of being touched by the other team then the icing will be waved off.

    HIGH STICK

A High Stick occurs when a player touches a puck with their stick when it is above the height of the

cross bar (4 feet). At younger levels the height may be the player's shoulders. In order to be sure check

with a referee before the game so you can inform your players.

    IN THE CREASE

A player may be called for 'In The Crease' if they are in the other teams goalie crease before the puck

enters the crease. Once the puck is in the crease they can go in and get it. If a player enters the other

teams crease before the puck the referee can blow the whistle and the face off will come outside the

    zone.

    HIT FROM BEHIND

A player is not allowed to hit an opposing player any where in the back. Players are only allowed to be

body checked from the front or side of their body. Hitting a player from behind is a very dangerous play

and can result in serious injury. My ten-year professional career was ended because of a hit from

behind. Please remind your players to only hit the opposition from the front or side.

    CHARGING

Charging is when a player hits another player after taking three or more strides. Taking three or more

strides is considered excessive and will be considered a penalty.

  • 8/9/2019 Bantam 2005

    7/104

    SPEARING

Spearing is when a player stabs another player with the tip of their stick blade. This can result in a

serious injury. Players should be reminded how dangerous this is.

    SLASHING

Slashing is when a player swings their stick and hits another player in the body with it. Many players

have broken wrists, ribs and ankles as a result of a slash.

RD covers opposition in front of the net.

*Center is the most important player in the DZone.

C should shade to the corner the puckis in they should anticipate any passes madeby the opposition along the boards and jump

should pick it up and start the breakout. If

LW goes to the high slot

RW goes to the top of circle or to the boards for the breakout.Wings should never be lower than the hash marks and center should not go

(when LD has the puck)LD has the puck and should look to move it tothe cutting center or the posted up left wing.

RD should be behind the LD and about half

the ice away. This will make them a possiblepassing option or a safety valve if the puck is

turned over.C should swing to the LD and then up ice.

They should be ready to receive a pass or to

support the LW.LW should stay wide near the boards and

open up for the pass also should be ready tomove as soon as the pass comes or ready to

support the C if the C receives the pass.

RW stays wide until the puck is moved up tothe LW or the C then they should begin to

head up ice cutting toward the middle to

support the LW and C.D's should avoid making cross-ice passes

because they very easily could turn into adamaging turn over.As players become more advanced they

can move the puck D to D and it will openup the Neutral Zone more. The Center will

just cut to the side that is going to have the

puck.If the RD has the puck the roles are reversed.

Strong side wing (RW) moves over the redline and keeps an eye on their wing. If their

D beats the center the RW steps up and

does not give up the red line.LW locks onto their wing on his or her side

Once the pass is made F1 should hussle back up

    IN-ZONE POWERPLAY:

When your team gets the puck into the otherteams zone on the power play they should

always try to out man the other team on the

puck until you have clear possession. Thismeans if they have one player you should havetwo.

Once you gain possession you should try to

overload one side of the ice, have the center

go down low, a winger on the boards, and theother wing in front of the net. The D's shouldbe at the point.

Players should move the puck around the

perimeter and either set up the point for a shot

or try to get the other team out of position sothere is a lane to the net. Also look for the

wing in front of the net to become open for ashot.

This can be a difficult concept for younger

players just try to emphasize moving the puckquickly and always out manning the opposition

    on loose pucks.

moves up the ice together and the FIRST PASS must be completed. C andD both swing the corner low supporting the ODef. LW swings low to alsosupport the play (Top of circle). RW is the stretch play to pull the other

teams def back alittle more. The ODef has 4 options in this set up. 1 and 2

    TRANSITION PLAY

    BREAKAWAY

When player has a breakaway they should maintain speed and protect puck from opponent. They have 2

    options: shooting and deking.

Player shoots when goalie is back in the net Player dekes when goalie comes out and challenges

    ONE-on-ONE

D: Always be a stick-length away. Force opponent outside; never give up the middle. Dictate

where he goes by body-positioning and stick placement. Keep your eye on his chest, your stick

on the ice. Dont wave the stick. When attempting to knock the puck away, use a front-to-back

motion of the stick instead of sweeping or waving. This will keep your body balanced. When

opponent is close enough, put stick between their legs (not to trip, but to guide so you know you

have them trapped). To be successful at one v one play you need to be confident in your ability

and possess good skating mobility. You also need to have good gap. Gap is the distance

between you and the offensive player. Lastly, your desire has to be greater than your opponents:

    eye of the tiger.

    O: Three options:

    1. Create time and space by varying speeds, making head, shoulder and stick fakes to pulldefenseman out of position.

    2. Keep feet moving to take the play wide, protect puck and drive to the net.3. If defenseman has poor gap and is too deep, use them as a screen and shoot the puck. After any shot drive to the net and be determined to score.

Lastly, your desire has to be greater than you opponents, eye of the tiger

    TWO-on-ONE

D: Gap is essential. Move to the middle of the ice skating backward. This will force the puck-

carrier wide. The D should always take away the middle of the ice. Once the D forces the puck-

carrier wide, the goaltender is responsible for the shooter. Then the D must take away the pass:

however, be sure not to commit too early and allow the puck-carrier a quality shot. You can still

put pressure on the puck-carrier by stick and head fakes, all along taking away the pass option.

Try to slow down the play to allow back-checkers time to get back in the play.

O: The puck carrier has many options depending on the position of the defense. If available they

can cut to the middle for a good shot or set a pick and leave the puck for the other offensive

player. Also, they can drive wide, try to bring the defense out of position, and pass to the other

offensive player. The player without the puck should either drop behind the puck-carrier for a

drop pass or drive hard to the net for a pass or rebound. They should never stay directly even

with the puck carrier, as this will create few options. Speed is most essential to the success of a

2-on-1. Keep feet moving and make defenseman uncomfortable. Also, attacking with speed will

  • 8/9/2019 Bantam 2005

    22/104

not allow back-checkers to interfere. Players should always make sure they get a shot on net:

70% of all 2-on-1 do not yield a shot on net.

    THREE-on-ONE

D: should stay in the middle of the ice and give offensive player the outside. D should protect the

middle and try to play the pass. The goalie is responsible for the puck-carrier. D should make

sure the shot is taken from the outside at a bad angle. Never allow the back-door pass. Try to

slow down the play so back-checkers can return.

O: Puck-carrier should take puck wide and try to pull d away from the middle. The second forward

in the zone should drive hard to the net for a pass or rebound. The third forward should drop in

behind the puck carrier for a drop pass. If the third player gets the drop pass they should look to

shoot quickly or pass to second forward. Player should never stay in a straight line. This will

make the 3 on 1 easy to defend. Quick puck movement and making a quick play will draw the d

out of position and ensure back checker doesnt get involved. Always get a shot on net!

    TWO-on-TWO

D: try to make play the 2-on-2 rush as two separate 1-on-1s. Try to prevent the offensive playersfrom criss-crossing and setting a pick. It is necessary to maintain great gap. They should break

play up by blue line by being 2 stick lengths or less away from opponent. If offensive players

criss cross in neutral zone then you should stay with your man and be aggressive. If offensive

players criss cross in defensive end try to stay on your side and take the player coming to your

side. Communication between partners is paramount.

    O: 2 options:

    1. Player with the puck drives wide and tries to draw his defenseman out. Player without thepuck drives hard to the net for a pass or rebound.

    2. Players crisscross. Puck-carrier cuts in front of other offensive player, trying to confusedefenseman. He can either drop-pass, or fake the drop and go to the net.

    THREE-on-TWO

D: Defense tries to break it up into a 2-on-1 and a 1-on-1. One defenseman plays the 2-on-1, the

other plays the 1-on-1. Always stay in the middle of the ice and force attackers wide. Keep stick

on ice and maintain good gap. If the puck-carrier drop-passes, the D playing the 2-on-1 must

step up. The other D fills in and takes the middle. Clear front of net - protect the goalie.

O: Puck-carrier should carry puck wide and try to pull one of the Ds away from the middle. The

second player in the zone should drive to the net for a pass or rebound and to force the second Dto go with him. This will allow the third player to be open for a drop pass. Third player in zone

drops behind puck carrier for a drop pass. If third player receives the drop pass they should

shoot quickly or pass to first or second player. The most important part of a 3-on-2 is having

someone go to the net. Both players cant get a drop pass. Someone has to take charge and drive

    to the net.

    SKILLS

    PASSING

Passing is a vital part of the game and an area that needs to be focused on constantly.

The game of hockey is based on puck movement. Good puck movement moves the opposition out ofposition and provides good offensive scoring chances.

    Technique:

Head up on all passes and look at target. Knees should be bent-no off balance passes. Follow thru with sweeping motion right thru target. Just like a good golfer or baseball player,

finish swing. Stick blade should point to target when pass is made.

Make sure the passer does not slap at the puck while attempting the pass. It is a sweepingmotion from the back of your stance to your follow thru on your front foot. It should be a quiet

    pass.

No Hope Passes: player should not hope it gets there. Give a good firm pass. Be confident.

    RECEIVING

Make sure players stick is on the ice. They should lower bottom hand on the stick and reach out to

receive the pass and cradle it as it touches their stick. This will prevent the pass from hitting their stick

tOo hard and bouncing away. The player should try to have the pass make no noise when they receive

it. Soft hands: many players miss hard passes because they dont have a strong grip on the lower hand.

    GAPPING / ANGLING

Proper Gap is the distance a defensive player keeps from the offensive player to ensure they take away

time and space and limit offensive players ability to generate offense.

In the neutral zone I like to be no more than 2 stick lengths away, and as I cross the blue line I like to be

less than 1 stick length away from my opponent so I can make my play. A good player has the ability tobreak up a play at the blue line or at least by the tops of circles. Be sure not to back yourself into the

goalie, as you will turn into a screen.

To ensure proper gap player must work hard getting up into the offensive play so that when a turn over

occurs you are in good position.

Angling is the position the player takes while trying to defend a puck carrier any where on the ice.

Player should be sure to never go directly at puck carrier. As a puck carrier it is much easier to avoid a

defensive player that is coming straight at them. Angling requires good skating skills; knees must be

bent and stick on ice. Players should always angle player toward boards and keep puck out of the middle

  • 8/9/2019 Bantam 2005

    25/104

of the ice. To angle properly player must force puck carrier in one direction by adjusting speed, and

using stick and body positioning to dictate where player goes.

    STICK CHECKING

The 3 types are: Poke, Stick and Sweep Check.

Poke Check is from the front or side of opponent. After you obtain proper positioning player uses fullblade of stick to POKE puck off opponents stick.

Stick Check occurs when defensive player lifts opponents stick. Checker must be strong and quick with

the stick. Player should always stick check by going under oppositions stick and never over stick.

Sweep Check happens when the defensive player is chasing his opponent from behind and sweeps stick

    in and pulls puck back.

    PUCKHANDLING

Players should control the puck with the middle of the blade of their stick. Players should not carry the

puck to the side of their body. Emphasis carrying the puck out in front of them, the puck should lead

them into turns. Also while skating straight forward it should be in the middle of their feet at sticks

length in front of them, no further away. Make sure they are controlling it by dribbling it from forehand

to backhand. Keeping the puck in front of them will allow them to play the puck with their feet if they

lose it. Keeping the puck close to their body will allow them to be able to make quick passes, take quick

shots and make defending them more difficult. Players head should always be up; they should see the

puck out of the bottom of their eyes (peripheral vision). Elbows should be away from body and grip

should be very loose and relaxed on hands. Dont beat the puck square. Cradle pucks side to side dont

chop at it. Hands should not be together, spread them out. Emphasize carrying puck with speed. Make

sure feet are always moving when a player has puck. When a player has room they should push puckahead with one hand but keeping it within a sticks length. This will allow the player to be able to gain

    speed.

    PUCK PROTECTION

Players should learn to protect the puck with their body and the distance they hold the puck from

defenders. In close quarters players should keep a part of their body between the puck and a defender.

They should try to keep two hands on their stick and use their feet and legs to prevent a successful pock

check, in some instances they should hold their stick with one hand and use the other to hold of adefender. Near the corners a player can turn his back to a defender to shield the puck, they can use head

and body fakes to escape. Make sure you have knees bent and are on a slight angle so you dont get

checked from behind. When carrying the puck at a defender they should calculate the distance of the

defenders stick length to insure they cannot poke the puck away. Players can also take advantage of

theAttack Triangle. This is the triangle formed between defenders stick and two skates, which is a

difficult area for a defender to obtain puck. This will allow puck carrier to not get poke checked and

buy time and space with puck.

  • 8/9/2019 Bantam 2005

    26/104

Jaromir Jagr a teammate of mine was the best player in the world because you could not get the puck

from him. He always kept his body between the opponent and the puck. Puck protection is vital and

    something we need to master!

    SHOOTING STRATEGIES

I was able to set the AHL scoring record with the Providence Bruins with 28 goals by a defenseman in a

single season. I was able to do this by hitting the net, getting shot off quickly; believing each shot can

go in. Shoot to score, dont just shoot to shoot In practice players should treat every shot with prideand urgency.

    SPEED AND ACCURACY

Developing wrist and hand strength is very important for the speed of the shot. Also, technique iscritical. I shot 500 pucks a day for 10 years to perfect my shot. Getting a shot off quickly will allow

goaltender less time to set up, which will maximize your opportunity to score. Shooting the puck to

specific areas of the net such as the four corners and five-hole (between goalies legs) will also maximizeyour scoring. Statistics show shooting low creates more scoring chances.

    SHOOTING ALL TYPES OF SHOTS

Certain rules apply to every shot a player takes.

Player should always focus on target. Head up!

Transfer body weight. Get hips and lower body into shot.

    Follow thru

    Practice makes perfect.

Always attack net after shot for rebound. Be hungry in front of net.

Back leg should come up when finishing shot and on follow thru.

    WRIST SHOT

A good wrist shot is the basis for being able to shoot all types of shots well. Players should start with

their weight on their back leg. As they move there stick through their body the weight should transfer to

their front leg. The puck should begin just behind their back foot, not two far away from their body.

The player should have a good lean on their stick; make sure their bottom hand is about halfway downthe stick applying pressure downward on the stick. The player should move their stick and the puck

toward the target at the same time the player should transfer their weight to the front leg. As the stickcontinues through, the player should keep pressure downward on the stick until they release the puck.

Make sure they follow through, roll their top wrist over and aim at the target. The higher the follow

through the higher the shot should go. Just like our passes player must follow thru like a golf or baseballswing.

    TIPS

  • 8/9/2019 Bantam 2005

    27/104

Keeping the puck close to the body will hide the shot and prevent a poke check.

Dont sweep the puck bring it in closer as you shoot it will insure maximum power.

Keep skates perpendicular to the net and let follow though point them toward the net.

Never flip the puck on a wrist shot, prevent blade from opening up.

    SNAP SHOT

The snap shot is similar to the wrist shot; however the puck should start a bit more forward in the

players stance. The player should bring their stick backward no more than 3inchs from the puck, and

then bring their stick forward to strike the puck. They should sustain a downward pressure on their stick

until the follow through, this will cause the stick to bend and cause a whipping action as the stick comes

    through the stance.

    TIPS

    Always stay low

Keep puck on the heel of the stick, shooting off the toe will reduce power.

Dont hack at the puck, bring stick back not up and snap it to the net.

    BACKHAND SHOT

Player should bring puck back as far as time allows but not to far past back foot. Transfer of body

weight is key to a hard backhand. Player should keep bottom hand low on stick and bring the puck

through their stance similar to wrist shot. Try to have stick cupped over the puck as it comes through

the stance to insure it is not flipped. Follow thru is essential once again.

    SKATING

    INTRODUCTION

Skating is the most important aspect for a hockey player. Getting from point A to point B as quicklyand efficiently as possible is a necessity. I always had quick feet but didnt have the basic fundamentals

down as a kid so my stride suffered. Once I learned them, I had a longer and more efficient stride, was

quicker and had better balance. A few simple adjustments will help all players significantly.

    START-ACCELERATION

The player must understand basic skating form:

Knees bent - should be able to touch shaft of stick with knee (like sitting in a chair)

    Back straight and head up

When accelerating player must stay low on take-off and have full body going forward not rising up.

Many times kids are low on take-off and once they start skating everything pops up. Use a stick over a

kids head on acceleration to make sure they stay low and jump right into the stride.

Players first two steps must be explosive and try to gain as much ice as possible. Short choppy bursts

waste energy. Long, strong bursts gain more ice and will get player to top speed quicker.

    STRIDING (ACCELERATION/ SPEED)

The stride is one of the most important parts of skating. This takes many years to develop. Through

repetition, strength (as kids get older their muscles get more developed) and hard work the stride will

    improve.

There are two key components to a productive stride Extension and Return.

Extension: leg extends outward to start the stride. Player must have full body weight on that leg, must

extend the leg as far as it goes, and finish with toe chipping a piece of ice. This is Full Extension. If a

player does this properly it results in a longer stride and thus more speed.

Return: after Full Extension, the leg must return all the way back under the body so heels almost touch,

in preparation for the next extension. Without a full return, you wont have a full extension on the next

stride. The faster the return the faster the player can extend thus creating speed. I always tell the kidsall the way out (Extension), all the way in (Return).

Another important area of skating is to utilize arm swing when you skate. Young players need 2 hands

on stick for balance. Once a player gets to mites and squirts they must get hands into stride by using one

hand on stick and swinging arms in a forward motion, just like running outside.

    MENTAL PREPARATION

Hockey is 80% mental and 20% physical

Players should make sure they are in a positive frame of mind before, during and after a game. If the

player thinks negative thoughts, negative things will happen on the ice.

Mental imagery should be used prior to game time. Sit in a quiet room or on the car ride over to the

game think of your responsibilities on the ice and imagine scoring a game-winning goal, delivering a big

hit or making a great pass. These are all positive images that will happen if you are in the right frame of

mind. Never say you cant do something.

Have a key phrase when things are going bad on the ice to change your way of thinking. I always said

Move Mountain. Nothing is going to get in my way so move over mountain. Its kind of corny but

    really helped me.

Make sure your first shift sets the tone for the rest of your game. Talking, getting a big hit in, and

touching the puck are all great ways to get you into the game.

Nerves are normal but if a player is too tense it will make them sluggish. It should always be a positive

feeling before game time. Player should want to compete and give 100% the whole game. Everything

else is out of your control.

Winning is hard work and doesnt just happen. Be a winner and never accept losing. Always evaluate

yourself after a game to go over negatives and positives.

Remember hockey is a game of mistakes; its how you react to your mistakes that makes you a good

    player.

    SPORTS NUTRITION

Not eating properly is like not putting fuel in your car. If you eat poorly you will run out of gas.

Water is essential to your system. Make sure you hydrate before, during and after a game. An athlete

should drink water all day long.

The night before a game have a high-carbohydrate meal: pasta, potatoes, bread, rice, along with some

chicken or steak. These carbohydrates will kick in at game time the next day.

The day of a game you need to eat 3 hours before the game. If you dont have that luxury, have some

toast, a powerbar or a bagel. Try to avoid acidic foods, dairy products, or fast food.

    PRACTICE PLAN

In order to maximize the development of young players, practice drills should be designed to

improve their skill and knowledge in a building block process. Pro Ambitions has designed 24 practices

for you to use with your team. The practices should be used eight at a time and then repeated before you

    use the next eight.

Pro Ambitions has broken the season into thirds. During each third there are objectives and

points of emphasis that the eight practices will cover. Each third will be more advanced from the one

that comes before. The objectives for each third will ensure that players are being developed using a

    proven building block technique.

These practices are suggested by Pro Ambitions and cover all of the objectives for the third of

the season. Coaches should feel free to substitute in other drills as long as the objectives are being

addressed. Coaches will know their teams weaknesses and strengths as the season goes along and

    should adjust practices accordingly.
