Students Arriving Before 8.30am
A reminder to those parents and caregivers who drop their children at school before 8.30am that your child is UNSUPERVISED and the school is not liable if anything untoward should happen. Teacher supervision begins at 8.30am. Parents and caregivers who continue to avoid using Leroy’s Before and After School Care facility, will be requested to attend the school for a meeting to further discuss the seriousness of this matter.

Are you reading with your child
every night?
If not, why not??
It’s important!
Please contact your child’s class
teacher if you need assistance with
reading strategies.
P&C Easter Basket Raffle
Bankstown North Public School P&C are holding an Easter Basket Raffle to raise monies for the school. The raffle will be drawn on our Easter Hat Parade day on Thursday 11 April 2019 at morning assembly. All donated gifts will be packaged and wrapped as prizes. If you are able to assist our P&C with the raffle (ie: making up baskets) please contact Mrs Nurisen Hashmi (P&C President) on 0403 595 925. Our students enjoy this day immensely so PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY to this fantastic fundraiser. Many thanks for your support!
Harmony Day
We had a wonderful day celebrating Harmony Day on 20 March. It was a great success, with special thanks to all the students, staff and families who supported the day by wearing their national costumes or orange, the colour of Harmony Day. Parents and caregivers shared lunch with their children before enjoying a special assembly. The preparation and organisation which goes on prior to these days is great so special thanks go to Mrs Ricchuiti, the class teachers and to who all played an integral role in the day. Thank you also to our P&C committee for organising and running a successful sausage sizzle – an amazing amount of $992.30 was raised. Thank you to our school community for supporting this fundraiser.
Homework Workshop
Thank you to those parents and caregivers who attended our Parent Workshop on Homework last Wednesday – we had a big turnout. Many of the parents and caregivers I spoke to found the workshop extremely useful in providing them with a better understanding of what work is expected to be completed at home along with strategies to assist their child with their learning.
If any parent or caregiver would like more information, or requires further assistance with the information presented, please do not hesitate to make a time to see your child’s class teacher.
A big thank you to all our teachers who organised a fantastic presentation - the time taken to prepare for this was evident in the presented workshops. I would particularly like to acknowledge the efforts of our terrific Community Engagement Team – Mr Jordan, Mrs Chacon, Miss Vojvodic, Ms Beeche, Mrs Francis, Mrs Papadakis, Mrs Renno and Mr Formica.
At the conclusion of the workshop, parents who attended were eligible to win one of two $50 vouchers kindly donated by Bankstown Sports Club.
Congratulations to the lucky winners:
Outstanding Money and Fees
Invoices are being sent home with today’s newsletter to all families for outstanding payments due. Prompt payment would be appreciated.
Multicultural Public Speaking
The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition was introduced in 1996, making this year the 23rd year of the competition. Bankstown North Public School has a strong tradition of participation in this competition and has had some outstanding speakers represent us over the years.
We would like to see each student from years 3-6 participate in this competition as it will help develop lifelong skills in speaking in front of an audience. Please see the note further in the newsletter from the coordinators, Mrs Ricchiuti and Mrs Chacon, outlining the requirements.
2019 NAPLAN Tests
This year, NAPLAN is changing. We are moving away from the traditional pen and paper version onto the new online mode. NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment, more precise results and a faster turnaround of information, as well as being more engaging for our students. Year 5 students will complete all assessments online, while the year 3 students will still do their writing assessment using pen and paper with all the other assessments being done online.
There has been a significant amount of planning, development, research and trialling to ensure that the NAPLAN online will provide more accurate information about your child.
The dates for this year's NAPLAN are as follows:
Writing : 14-16 May Reading : 14-24 May Language Conventions : 14-24 May Numeracy : 14-24 May
Exact dates will be given to you in the near future.
Opportunity Class Placement
Government schools use a range of strategies to meet the educational needs of gifted and talented students. One strategy is opportunity class placement which provides intellectual stimulation and an educationally enriched environment for gifted and talented students.
Offers for opportunity class placement in 2020 will be made on the basis of the Opportunity Class Placement Test results and school assessment. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019.
If your child is in Year 4 in 2019 and you would like your child to apply for opportunity class placement in Year 5 in 2020, you need to do so soon.
You will need to apply on the internet and submit your application online. You will need to have an email address (not the student’s email address), access to the
internet and a printer. Detailed instructions on how to apply online are available at
https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-
classes/general-information
The application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019 at 5pm. No late applications will be accepted.
There is no paper application form. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance. You must submit only ONE application for each student.
Any enquiries by parents/caregivers regarding opportunity class school placement should be directed to the Selective High School and Opportunity Class Placement unit on telephone 9707 6262.
Term Dates
The last day of Term 1 is next Friday 12 April 2019. School resumes for all students K-6 for Term 2 on Tueday 30 April.
School Development Day Changes
Please be aware that the Term 4 School Development Days (SDDs) 2019 that are scheduled for Thursday 19
and Friday 20 December have been changed. Therefore, I am confirming the following days as our 2019 Sessions:
Term 1 – Saturday 23 February
Term 3 – Saturday 31 August
This change will cause no disruption to student learning as the last day for ALL students in Term 4 is Wednesday 18 December.
Lost Property Box
The school lost property box was recently cleaned out and all items that had been correctly labelled were returned to the students. However, there are a number of items that were not clearly labelled, or labelled at all, and therefore remain in the box. Please ensure that your child’s uniform items are correctly labelled so that lost items can be returned easily.
School Assembly
Our next whole school formal assembly will be held on Thursday 4 April commencing at 2.00pm in our school hall. Your attendance at our assemblies is always welcome!
Thank you for your continued support and have a terrific April holiday break! Stay safe!
Jon Godwin - Principal
Important Notes
Our school newsletter is sent home on a fortnightly basis. A great deal of time is spent preparing the newsletter to keep our community informed of school activities. Please take the time to read it and to keep abreast of what is happening at your child’s school. We often receive requests for additional copies of permission notes from parents who have lost them. This is both time consuming and costly for the school. All newsletters and notes are available to download from the school website. We ask that if you have misplaced a note or newsletter to download a new copy from home. Additionally we often are requested for copies of school reports and NAPLAN results. These are important documents and parents need to keep them in a safe place for future reference. It is not the school’s responsibility to provide additional copies of such documents.
Stewart House Envelopes
Sent home with this newsletter, is the 2019 Donation Drive envelope. Your donation will help support the 1800 children who attend Stewart House each year across NSW and ACT.
For a $2 donation, your envelope goes into the draw to win a $4000 family holiday. Please return your envelopes to the school office by Friday 17 May 2019.
Taking part is easy:
Step 1: Fill in the envelope with your name, address, telephone number and school.
Step 2: Insert a donation of at least $2.00 into the envelope and seal it.
Step 3: Return the envelope to school. The winner and the winner’s school will be contacted by phone and mail as soon as possible. Full terms and conditions for this competition are available from the Stewart House website: www.stewarthouse.org.au
Stewart House Bags
Stewart House bags have been sent home with your child. Your donation of good, clean, wearable clothing, shoes, manchester and blankets will help both Stewart House and the Smith Family support the disadvantaged children in our communities. Please put the bags outside the door of the school hall (under the covered area) by Wednesday 2 May 2019. The upcoming school holidays are a good chance to clean out your wardrobes at home.
School Safety - Photos
Safety of our students is a priority at Bankstown North Public School. We ask that at school events, photos are not taken in a general setting. You are allowed to take photos of your child only. A school representative is usually on hand to take photos as they are able to ascertain through school records, who has permission to publish.
We also need to be aware of any people that are within the school grounds at all times. All parents/carers are reminded that when entering the school grounds during the day they must report to the front office first. This includes when picking children up early or visiting throughout the day to drop something off. Parents are not permitted to wander around the school grounds during school hours. We appreciate your support in this matter.
National Day of Action Against
Bullying and Violence
The ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence was on Friday 15 March 2019 which our school recognised with a special assembly on Thursay 21 March. At Bankstown North Public School, we are building relationships with our wider community and doing so organised a very special visit from Senior Constable Phillip Smith, the Youth Liaison Officer from Bankstown Police, who spoke to our students about the effects of bullying and violence.
The special assembly was a culmination of our whole school participation in Bullying No Way initiative. Through this journey, our students developed strategies to identify and deal with bullying in positive ways and created placards with the theme ‘Imagine a world free of bullying’, which were shared daily with the school community at morning assembly.
Attention Year 3 – 6 Students The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition was introduced in 1996 and aims to strengthen and improve student interest and confidence in public speaking and speech writing.
All students in Years 3-6 are invited to join our school in this great experience and we encourage all students to write a speech about a topic that is of interest to them. The list of topics can be found below as well as the suggested speaking times. Class teachers will conduct a class public speaking competition in week 2 and will then select a two of the best public speakers from the class to go through to a whole school competition to be held in week 4.
The school holidays is a good opportunity for students to think about their speech and begin writing one. We hope ALL 3-6 students participate in this competition.
During the school-based competition, students will only be presenting their prepared speech, however, at district level, they will need to present both a prepared and impromptu speech. Mrs Ricchiuti and Mrs Chacon will work with the district public speakers on strategies for impromptu speech-writing.

Positive Behaviour
For Learning
(PBL)
At Bankstown North Public School,
we choose to be safe learners
Bankstown North Public School has undertaken the Positive Behaviour for Learning
program as the major focus of the school’s Wellbeing component.
As part of the program the children are rewarded for Making Good Choices, Being
Safe and Being Learners by receiving a ‘Crikey’ – a yellow slip of paper that the
child receives from teachers when they are seen to be following our school
expectations.
The children then place these into a barrel and enter the weekly ‘Crikey Raffle’. The
more ‘Crikeys’ a child receives in a week; the greater chance they have of winning
the raffle.
The ‘Crikey’ Raffle takes place at the Friday morning assembly with winners winning a
$2 canteen voucher and a letter home from Mr Godwin.

Thank you to all parents and carers who were able to join us for our special Harmony Day
celebrations. Our school looked like a wonderful sea of bright colours as students came
dressed in orange or something traditional representing their country.
The Harmony Day assembly showcased a few of our students who spoke about their cultural
background, which was a great way of getting to know some of the cultures in our school. A
few classes also sang songs about bringing everyone together and our gorgeous
kindergartens performed Frere Jacques. Finally, we concluded the assembly with an
amazing whole school performance of ‘I Am, You Are, We Are Australian’, which was sung
perfectly by each student in the school.
Thank you to our dedicated teachers who spent time perfecting the song so that it could
come together beautifully. Thank you to our P&C for organising the lunchtime sausage sizzle
and snacks, which everyone enjoyed, and a special thank you to the parents that gave up
their time to share a little aspect of their culture with some of our classes.
A great fundraiser for Stage 3 matched a number of teachers up against 30 students. The
infants had a bit of fun getting throw dodgeballs at some teachers before the serious
matches began. But don’t take my word for it.
Here is what two of the students had to say...
‘3,2,1, go!’ Mr Formica spoke into the microphone. Half of the crowd screaming ‘go students, go students’ and the other half cheering ‘go teachers, go teachers’. Dodgeballs were flying everywhere, hitting
teachers and hitting students. We, the students, finally score a goal. ‘YEAH!’ the crowd screamed, ‘yes’ I whispered to myself eager to get another goal. Round one was over so we swapped around as our team made a plan. Again ‘3, 2, 1, go’ was yelled out. ‘Come on guys we can do this’ I told my teammates with lots of hope. ‘Mrs Hatfield OUT!” the commentators shouted into the microphone. ‘Ms Beeche out, Mr Leedow out’. A few students got out. As Miss Nicole was the only teacher left, she threw the ball with
all her might and the crowd screamed again ‘GO TEACHERS’ as the ball hit the back of the students net. Round three. ‘We have to get this goal’ my teammates told me. ‘I know, I know’ I replied, afraid we
wouldn't get the shot, dodging all the balls trying so hard not to get hit. We were down to Mr Formica and Mr Leedow. They had a master plan. Mr Leedow threw the ball in the air then Mr Formica threw the
ball in the goal. ‘YES’ the crowd went wild! Good job teachers well played. by Ameena - 5/6 Yellow
Round one! ‘Thud’ as I hit Mrs Hatfield in the face and Mr Formica hits me with all of his strength. As I
leave the court feeling sad, it is the end of round one. Round two, I was on fire getting all of the teachers out except Ms Avgoustis . As I take my last shot, Ms Avgoustis scores a lucky shot that hits the back of
the net. There is no more hope in this game. It's the beginning of round 3 and all of the pressure is on my team now. ‘3, 2, 1, GO!’ the commentators scream loudly through the microphone. David throws in two balls. I got the first ball and threw it with all my strength and power. I get Mrs Hatfield out. ‘Lets go’ I
scream loudly. As I celebrate, Mr Formica hits me on the leg. Walking out of the the arena with no more hope for my team. Sadly, they score. Teachers are now officially better than students in dodgeball . . . not soccer. As the teachers cheer loudly, the students walk off with no smile on their faces. As the teachers are doing there cringe fortnite dance, I throw the ball at Mr Formica and then run off. It's a perfect score
the teachers won 3 nil. by Adam - 5/6 Blue

1/2 Green Class Chatter
During History lessons, 1/2 Green are learning about the
past and the present. This week we are connecting what we have learned about the past to the history of Aboriginal Peoples and games that they used to play.
We are learning how
to make string figures.
We learned that string
games were used for self-enjoyment or
the entertainment
of others.
We also learned that these sorts of string games are no longer used in the Aboriginal &
Torres Strait Islander Cultures. However, we did have a lot of fun learning about
these string games that were played in
the past.
We are learning the importance of
the use of aboriginal tracking symbols and how their people used them in the past to communicate with each other.
