very year a high level conference of Bankers named BANCON (Bank conference) is held in our country. The theme given

for the conference held in 2010 was 'Transform to Outperform-Ideate, Innovate & Inspire'. It shows how the BankingEsector in our country is trying to change itself as per needs of the times.

The global turmoil that shook the world a couple of years ago and about which we have heard so much in the recent past , had

least effect in India. For this, credit is given to the strength of our country' Banking system which has stood test of the time

.Now the robustness and resilience of Indian Banking system is acknowledged all over the world. As a matter of fact now

many countries are trying to learn from, and adopt the sound practices being followed by Banks and Banking system in our

country.

While the Banking sector in India is growing as a whole, public sector Bank in the country are really growing fast. Many of

them have doubled their business and profits in last four-five years. With the GDP growth rate of above 9 percent, which the

country expects to have in the years to come, the growth rate of these banks are also set to increase. You can also be a part of

this growth story as these banks, now a days are recruiting young people like you in large numbers.

Recruitment Levels

There are 21 public sector banks in the country which are partly (with majority stake) or wholly owned by Government of

India. The direct recruitments by these public sector banks are made in both clerical and officers' cadre. Large number of

people who had joined the banks in post nationalization era, are gradually retiring making room for new employees.

Additional manpower is needed by the banks for their growth plans as well.

There are seven levels of officers in public sector banks starting from Junior Management Grade Scale I to Top Executive

Grade Scale VII. Maximum number of direct recruitments in officers cadre are made in scale I which is the entry level position

to join a public sector bank as an officer. This position is most commonly known as Probationary officer or as Management

Trainee in some cases. As the directly recruited fresh officers are first put on probation,

they are called probationary officers. The duration of probation ranges from one to two

years. After satisfactory performance during this period the officers are confirmed in

the service of particular bank.

Trainings

All public sector banks give much importance to train their new officers for grooming

them to perform their job well. The induction training is usually in form of classroomtraining in which they get an idea of banking systems and procedures, bank's products and services, technology used in bank

etc. The officers are also explained their role and responsibilities and vision, mission and values of the bank they have chosen

to work in. Almost all public sector banks have their own training establishments where such trainings are provided.

Practical, on the job training is considered more important for new officers. This training takes place in branches and to some

extent in administrative offices of the bank. The branches are main operating units of the bank and it is considered necessary

specialized areas like law, security, human resource management, information technology, risk management etc. Even

though you may have joined the bank as a general banking officer the bank may provide opportunity to work in such

specialized functions, to those with related specialised qualifications. Similarly those recruited as specialist officer, over a

period of time, have the option to convert into general banking officer.

Promotions

Every public sector bank has a defined promotion policy. Under the policy an officer, after completing a certain period in the

scale, can apply for promotion to next higher scale. Promotion to higher scale is decided upon the annual performance

ratings, performance in written test/interview/group discussion. Promotion process for senior management position s

exclude written test and there is more emphasis to judge the leadership qualities of the officer.

Keeping with the times public sector banks have brought a lot many positive changes in their promotion policy as a result of

which now getting promoted to the next higher grade has become easier and speedier for deserving candidates. With such

changes now an officer joined in scale I can aspire to become a general manager of the bank in a matter of 17 years. As banks

are expanding fast, promotional opportunities are also going to increase.

It may surprise you to know that all those persons who are now chairmen or executive directors of public sector banks, began

their career as a junior officer and some even as clerks in some bank. As such, for deserving people sky is the limit for career

growth in public sector banks.

More Opportunities

Many of the public sector banks have foreign branches abroad. Joining such banks may provide you opportunity to have

international exposure as officers from India are deputed to manage these foreign branches. Also some banks have

subsidiaries to which officers from parent bank are deputed.

Transferability

An officer's job in a public sector has all India liability. So you should be willing to work anywhere in the country where the

bank has its branches. Normally transfers happen every 3-4 years. This gives the officers opportunity to see different parts of

our country. This exposure of working across different geographical locations is considered valuable for one's personality

development. But officers, if they want can spend a significant part of their tenure in their home state, subject to availability

of suitable vacant positions.

Job Security

Public sector banks offer adequate job security to all those who work with honesty, integrity and dedication. Also a bank

officer's job in India is considered of good social status. Working in a public sector bank you may help people to plan their

finances well and also contribute in strengthening the nation's economy.
