A British family are moved from the UK and transplanted into a replica of their terraced family home in the middle of a Namibian tribal village. Their house comes complete with running water, electricity and all their possessions. The Namibian village is home to a group of semi-nomadic Himba cattle-herders who live largely traditional lives.

Through this reverse anthropological exchange, the family face questions and judgement from their hosts, and are forced to reconsider their own assumptions and way of life. Beauty and body image, the wealth gap, social media, sex and infidelity, consumption and waste, and the roles of men and women – all come under the microscope in this funny, poignant and life-affirming series.

Should there still be a place for whale hunting in today’s world? This contentious practice has hit the headlines around the world, as whaling countries defy international pressure to ban the practice. Whalers argue it’s just food like any other meat. Campaigners call it barbaric and outdated.

With rare access to a Norwegian commercial hunting vessel, renowned TV presenter Stacey Dooley witnesses the killing of a Minke whale. And, on the remote Faroe Islands, modern day hunters defend their tradition of whale slaughter for food, while activists from around the world say they’ll keep coming to the island until they stop.

Until now investigators believe the infamous Boston art heist was carried out by the mob and the art never left America. This documentary explores a surprising new theory - the art was stolen by Irish thieves, taken to Ireland decades ago, and is now hidden away in Dublin. It’s possible the priceless works could still be recovered.

This film dives deep into the obsessive, international search for the paintings, introducing viewers to the dogged investigators on the hunt for both the thieves and the stolen goods, the rarified world of fine art, and shadowy underworld figures on both sides of the Atlantic caught up in the mystery.

They are the unsolved mysteries which grip Britain; high profile cases which cause agony for families and frustration for police. Lee Boxell, the 15 year old whose disappearance led to the longest and costliest forensic dig in Met police history. Claudia Lawrence, a chef who set off for work and has never been seen again. And Luke Durbin, whose disappearance after a night out led investigators deep into the world of drugs and county lines violence. No bodies have ever been recovered, so are these much loved sons and daughters still missing, or were they murdered?

Jailed for life in 2011 for killing her husband, Sally Challen was convicted on the unanimous decision of the jury. The result provoked little surprise among her friends and family, yet evidence later revealed that Challen was the victim of coercive control from her husband, who would manage her social life and spending. With fewer than 10% of appeals ever quashing a conviction, this documentary is a compelling groundbreaking case for the need for greater nuance in the law and its reporting.

In this warm, light-hearted but always informative journey, comedian Susan Calman looks in-depth at the history, characters and treasures hidden in these stunning spots. From castles to curling, and epic legends to ghostly tales, it’s an exclusive tour of beloved places plus stories of forgotten characters and unknown treasures.

In 1773, the famous writer Samuel Johnson made a grand tour of Scotland. He was accompanied by his young friend, James Boswell, who was also to be Johnson’s future biographer. Both wrote their own, very different, accounts of the journey. Now, comedian Frank Skinner and best-selling novelist Denise Mina, set out to recreate the same trip. Like the 18th century pair, they travel around the coast of Scotland, taking in the great monuments of the Lowlands, the majestic beauty of the Highlands, and the rugged, isolated splendour of the Hebrides.

In series two, Alice Roberts once again explores key periods in British history through the story of individual towns. This time Alice finds herself in Cardiff, Stirling, Canterbury, Bristol, Dover and Oxford as she unpacks very different historic eras. Whether she’s experiencing life as a Plantagenet pilgrim, a World War II soldier during the Battle of Britain, or as an Edwardian lady of leisure, Alice experiences what life would have been like for people living through some of the most important periods in British history.

Chris heads to Transylvania to seek out the truth behind the story of Dracula and finds out how well the region’s railway networks, meticulously described in Bram Stoker’s 1897 classic, have survived. Chris then heads to the crossroads of the world in search of a legendary long distance railway that played a crucial role in Turkey’s history. Chris also travels through one of his favourite places, Ireland, on a mission to visit all four corners of the Emerald Isle in just six days. Finally, Chris arrives in Mombasa on the trail of what was surely the greatest, maddest railway endeavour of the entire colonial era, the building of the so-called Lunatic Line.

He is the world’s most famous composer; his music is the soundtrack to every great ceremony in the world. But if ever a man struggled for his art, it was Beethoven. His was a tragic, dramatic life beset by deafness, lost loves and darkness. This series tells Beethoven’s story in the present tense, through a cast of internationally famous musicians and conductors, but unpacked by the real words of Beethoven himself.

Very few people become a star. Fewer still achieve iconic status. So just how do they do it? This series goes beyond the constraints of the velvet rope to reveal some of the most extraordinary rises to fame the world has ever seen. It lifts the lid on the blood, sweat and tears that go into becoming a world famous icon. Portrait Artist Of The Year is a visual feast, bringing together 72 accomplished artists to prove their skill at portraiture. At each heat, three celebrity sitters sit for them before impressive backdrops that pay tribute to the lives and working practice of a range of famous artists. Contestants have just four hours to create their portraits in a bid to make it through each stage of the competition and claim a life-changing prize – a £10,000 commission to paint famed musician Nile Rodgers for the Royal Albert Hall.

Amateur and professional accomplished artists are challenged to capture the most surprising and spectacular vistas Britain has to offer including awe-inspiring Tyneside bridges, a medieval castle, a surreal sci-fi observatory, oil rigs off the coast of Scotland and the iconic Battersea Power Station in London. They have four hours to create their landscape artworks, hoping to impress the judges. And at every heat the competition is thrown open to another 50 hopefuls; just one of whom will get the chance to make the semi-final and compete for the sensational £10,000 commission and prize.

Britain’s Most Expensive Home: Building For A BillionaireThis observational documentary chart’s the construction of a twelve bedroom, seven floor mega-mansion being renovated for John Caudwell and his family in the heart of Mayfair, London. Included in the rebuild is an automated car stacker, a dining room with a river of coy carp fish, a 40-foot swimming pool with lava effect wall and the biggest private ballroom after Buckingham Palace. To bring this fantasy home to life takes real technical and organisational smarts yet one of the biggest challenges is the client himself – John Caudwell. The billionaire is a self-confessed micro manager and an exacting boss.

From huge farmhouses to town apartments, centuries old villas to cutting-edge modern architectural masterpieces, many countries are full of beautiful, surprising and absolutely unique homes. But do they have what it takes to be Home Of The Year? Three judges, all experts on a different aspect of architecture and design, look for the one home that along with its signature style represents something about its inhabitants. Finally, the judges meet seven lucky homeowner finalists and decide on their top three, before crowning the ultimate winner ‘Home of The Year’.

This series discovers homeowners who have done something extraordinary to the place they call home. Three property and design experts travel the length and breadth of Scotland searching for the country’s most exceptional homes.
