Insight into snakevenom evolution couldaid drug discovery....
Dr Wolfgang Wuster, Bangor University among other UK-ledscientists have made a discoveryabout snake venom that couldlead to the development of newdrugs to treat a range of life-threatening conditions like cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Researches have discovered thatthe toxins that make snake andlizard venom deadly can evolveback into completely harmlessmolecules, raising the possibilitythat they could be developed intodrugs.
Dr Wolfgang Wuster, Bangor University, co-author of the studysays:
“Many snake venom toxins targetthe same physiological pathwaysthat doctors would like to targetto treat a variety of medical conditions. Understanding howtoxins can be tamed into harmless physiological proteinsmay aid development of curesfrom venom”.
