BFTD 1. What is your line up, how did the group begin and how longhave you been working together?

We are a four piece Indie/pop/rock band and we have been together for justunder two years.

    Matthew Colley/vocal/guitar/piano, Andrew Fletcher/bass/bv, JimmyHolliday/drums, Alex Wasley/lead guitar/BV

Myself (Fletcher) and Colley were musicians on our local Birmingham musicscene and we played abit here and there doing acoustic nights etc. We thenwere asked to perform in a band with Robert Plant to do some shows for atsunami relief campaign as keyboard player and bass player with vocalswhich of course we said yes. After many shows to alot of people we got thetaste for something better and decided to form The Amateurs.

BFTD 2. What are the biggest influences in your music and how doyou ensure that there is enough of you in your sound to be differ-ent?

All of us have totally different playing styles and influences which is kind of amelting pot for our sound. All the greats have influenced us from TheBeatles, Bowie, Dylan to current artists like Razorlight, Jack Penate andRadiohead. I think we get a unique vibe from our individual styles as there isjazz, funk, acoustic and rock all rolled into one package.

BFTD 3. What would you say your biggest achievements to date havebeen?

This and last year we supported Athlete, Guillemots, Reverend and the Mak-ers, Kid British, Cage the Elephant, played at Leeds Festival, Guilfest and toThousands at Artsfest in Birmingham. So all of them were great and i can'treally separate any of them as they were as good as each other. To be fairthis year we won a Billboard award for our song HOMESICK which theyvoted one of the top 500 songs of last year so that was a pretty good

    achievement.

BFTD 4. What are your thoughts on the state of the music industryright now?

Its hard to say. Everyone seems to have a strong opinion on the state of itand what they think is the answer to the changes that are taking place. Ithink the net is great for unsigned musicians as its easier to get your musicout there but on the same token because of that it has been swamped andthere is alot to listen to. I guess its good if you have the financial backing of

a major label and radio 1 behind you but otherwise its hard to sell your mu-sic without money to advertise it.

BFTD 5. What do you see as achievable goals within the next eight-een months?

We have some deals on the horizon which may see us take a step towardsour goal. I think we will be releasing Singles and trying to get some radio 1airplay really. Then when we have a buzz going we can do an album. The

timing has to be right, we don't want to waste any our songs and we want totour and play as much as possible this year to back up what we have alreadyachieved.

BFTD 6. How does the writing process work? Do individuals come

with complete songs or do you work together to create your music?

We tend to get a riff or a part going then take it in and work on it togetheras a unit. We have tried most ways and this has had by far the best resultsand made our songs quite unique. We have heated sessions sculpting songsas we are four strong minded individuals with opinions and we have to battleit out but it always ends up far better than any other way.

BFTD 7. What is the bands worst experience on stage and what has

    been your best?

To be fair i think the worst experience is breaking a string or stick, we prac-

The Amateurs - live and kicking.

tice hard and play to a high level so mistakes are little things. We alwaysjoke about the James Brown thing when he fined his band $5 for every mis-take. So if we do something little its like....i dropped a fiver in the middleeight.

BFTD 8. Do you have any funny or weird story to share with thereaders?

Loads of funny stuff goes on when on playing around the country, the thingsyou get to see and be part of is well good. I love the chants you get from thecrowd some of them can be real funny. I think the one that stands out forme is seeing a man in a wheel chair getting crowd surfed, always seems to

happen every festival i go to, fair play to them i say. Oh and the dancers, ilove the crazy dancers.

BFTD 9. How many gigs do you play in a year and do you tour muchabroad?

When we first started we played every week but now we do it in tours so wedo a couple of months of alot of dates then a rest then do it again. Its muchbetter that way i think. We did a tour of prague which we won in a competi-

tion. It was great to be flown out and stay in a plush hotel and be wined anddined and get to play so cool places and meet cool people. Half the stuff thatwent on over there can't be told, you know the rule....what goes on tour.

Great live shot slightly spoiled by the t*&$ in the green top!

BFTD 10. What is the best thing about being in a band?

Playing music. Its what we live for, the fame, money and attention for theladies is an amazing side of it but its the music that has to be good in thefirst place. We always try our hardest and have high standards so we ensurethat our music is unique and also worthy for the music loving public to hear.

We want them to enjoy our sets and have a good time. That makes us feelits worth doing.

BFTD 11. If you could have anything (as a group) what would it be?

We would like to have a album that people enjoy listening to and maybe theindustry and media like also. Its hard to get all those things but its thedream really. A top ten single wouldn't hurt either.

BFTD 12. Any final comments for the BFTD readership?

Musicians out there keep doing what you do, its great meeting people of allages and races playing songs that mean something to them. Also get outand watch music LIVE and support your local gig venues, i've seen far toomany close this year and its a shame. Peace.

No, the guys are not doing a DFS ad!

BFTD 1. What is your line up, howdid the group begin and how longhave you been working together?

NAOMI: It's just me and Gen. We'resister's who have always been inter-

ested in music and performing andhave been writing since we were inour teens.GEN: Yeh but we were kind of 'dis-covered' back in 2001. We were buy-ing some music equipment from afriend who was already gigging andhe wanted to hear us sing, so we did,he liked it and asked us to do somegigs with him.

BFTD 2. What are the biggest influences in your music and how doyou ensure that there is enough of you in your sound to be differ-ent?

GEN: There's so many bands that were an influence on us when we weregrowing up,like ABBA, A-ha and more recently bands like Evanescence, Coldplay andKeane.NAOMI: That's right but what really makes our music unique to us is writingwhat we really feel and what we've learnt through our life expiriences andexpressing it through our music, vocal and lyrics.

BFTD 3. What would you say your biggest achievements to date havebeen?

CHESTNUT BLONDE: Writing and producing our first album.

BFTD 4. What are your thoughts on the state of the music industry

    right now?

NAOMI: I don't think there's enough originality out there!GEN: Definitely. Too many manufactured bands who all sound the same!!!

BFTD 5. What do you see as achievable goals within the next eight-een months?

CHESTNUT BLONDE: We'd like to complete our second album which we'reworking on at the moment.

Just a friendly punch in the face

BFTD 6. How does the writing process work? Do individuals comewith complete songs or do you work together to create your music?

GEN: It's a combination of both really. Naomi usually writes the lyrics andgets the basic melody of verse and chorus together.NAOMI: Yeh and then Gen comes along and completely cocks it up!!! Just

jesting! Gen helps with the remixing, adds ideas for bridges, instrumentalsand other bits and pieces.

BFTD 7. What is the bands worst experience on stage and what hasbeen your best?

NAOMI: It's got to be forgetting the lyrics.GEN: I gather that's the worst experience, Naomi, so I would say the bestone is seeing the audiance enjoying our musical creations and that theyhaven't noticed when we've forgotten the lyrics!

BFTD 8. Do you have any funny or weird story to share with thereaders?

CHESTNUT BLONDE: Well we like to change words to popular songs and singour silly lyrics to backing tracks. Then we decided to make a video to oursilly song and posted it on you tube. It got banned in every single countryaround the world except Germany!!! How wierd is that!?

BFTD 9. How many gigs do you play in a year and do you tour muchabroad?

CHESTNUT BLONDE: We've never toured abroard. In the main we do private

functions, averaging about one every couple of months. We'd like to do morebut we have other commitments.

    Sofa so good

CHESTNUT BLONDE: Simon Cowells phone number!!! Oh and a recordingcontract of course.

BFTD 12. Any final comments for the BFTD readership?

CHESTNUT BLONDE: Dance like there's no one watching. Sing like there's noone listening. That's what we do and it works for us... Oh and thank youBFTD - YOU ROCK!!!

BFTD 1. What is your line up, how did the group begin and how longhave you been working together?

Weve been going for over a year now, although progress at first was a littleslow. It started with Chris and Greg, on guitars. Not too long afterwardsDaniel became the vocalist and very

recently we got a permanent bassist,Andrew.Right now Jamie is standing in astemporary drummer, but weve a newcandidate now for a potential permanentdrummer. Well just see how that goes, really.

The band started when Chris and Greg, ourguitarists, decided they wanted to get their

music out there. It was a reallyspontaneous thing, but were glad we wentfor it.Recently weve taken some really big stepsas a band, were half way throughrecording our debut EP and its soundingreally cool so far. Hopefully thatll turn intoan album pretty soon, seeing weve gotnew songs popping up all the time.

BFTD 2. What are the biggest influences in your music and how doyou ensure that there is enough of you in your sound to bedifferent?

Daniel: For the kind of music were doing, I, vocally, take influence fromCove Reber of Saosin, but Im also a massive Maiden fan, and I try my bestto emulate the intensity and power of Bruce Dickinson. Im not really in thesame league as them vocally, but that just makes me admire them more, itgives me something to aspire to. Then in terms of song-writing influences

theres also a big Maiden influence there, I like having songs that have adark vibe, and something that makes them unique. Though the occasionalpowerpop song doesnt go amiss!

Andrew: Most of my influences are from really obscure bands, but when itcomes to playing bass, and the tone I try to get out my bass, Id say I takesomething from the likes of Ed Breckenridge of Thrice, and Steven Hodson ofOceansize, quite a deep, intense, yet crisp and crunchy tone overall. Interms of song-writing I typically take a lot of influence from the likes of Hum,Hopesfall and Oceansize, kind of long, grand epic pieces, that can get you

really absorbed in all the little details and textures of the song.

Chris: One of my main influences is almost certainly Story of the Year. I

really like how they can play really quite powerful guitar whilst keeping themusic melodic, although if need be theyre more than capable of producingquite a thrashy song, so I guess I also appreciate their diversity. Senses Failare also a big influence, cant resist a catchy number, and they have them bythe bucketload.

Greg: Alter Bridge have been my favourite band for as long as I canremember, Mark Tremonti is such an under-rated guitarist! More recentlyIve been taking influence from bands like The Shinedown and Creed. I liketo try and sneak in the occasional classic rock guitar lick.

BFTD 3. What would you say your biggest achievements to date havebeen?

Band: Well, weve just finished recording our first music video, so thatshould be up on our myspace soon, its looking really cool so far. Were also

hoping to release that song as a single on iTunes, but well see.Obviously this interview is quite the achievement, so thank you to Band forthe Day!

Also, on a more general note, its been a nice achievementto be consistently get gigsover the past couple ofmonths, its always veryhumbling when people cometo listen to your music, andeven more humbling whenthey enjoy it! We also got apretty good review in theMagdalene, which is DundeeUniversitys official magazine. Also, another triumph isweve had both MarkTremonti of Alter Bridge andEric Bass of The Shinedown, endorsing our music, as can

be seen on our MySpace page (www.myspace.com/weareageofelement), andon YouTube.

BFTD 4. What are your thoughts on the state of the music industryright now?

Andrew: I think its kind of hard to make generalisations about the musicindustry now, saying that some stuff is shallow manufactured crap is a littleirrelevant if people can relate to it in some way. Though I think sometimes, if

youve got a specific music taste, you really have to search hard to findbands you like, and Ive certainly experienced that in the past, but withenough searching you can find some really amazing bands out there.

    19/39

    19

Daniel: The great thing about musicis that its entirely subjective. Youcan slag off a particular song all youwant but if it is being listened to,then obviously it is doing somethingright! I think that what we are

seeing nowadays in the musicindustry is greater and greaterversatility in music because we havethe technology to experiment withsounds and textures that previouslywe never could have. Music isdefinitely on the up in my opinion!

BFTD 5. What do you see as achievable goals within the nexteighteen months?

Band: World domination? Meh.But in all honesty, we really want to go for it in the next 18 months, our EPwill be coming out, not too long after that our album should be out, so forthat well be relentlessly gigging to promote these and sending them off torecord labels to see what they think of us.Obviously its early days yet, and we want to take things one step at a time, but were going to keep going, were in this for the long haul, regardless ofthe outcome. If we got signed by a record label, great, but if not well keep doing this, because were really enjoying this so much.

BFTD 6. How does the writing process work? Do individuals comewith complete songs or do you work together to create your music?

Band: Typically well go off and write songs separately, or in pairs. It alwaysstarts with just one person bringing either a riff or entire song to the rest ofthe band and seeing what everyone else thinks. The chief song-writer isalmost certainly Chris, but lately the rest of us have been contributing a lot

more to the writing process. This is probably because weve really cometogether as a band, and matured as musicians. Also we now know moreabout the music we like and want to make, so were more concise aboutstructuring and producing our songs.Writing songs separately has the advantage of both not being restricted byanyone elses differing music taste, nor does it put a limit on the time youhave to jam a song out.

BFTD 7. What is the bands worst experience on stage and what has

    beenyour best?

Daniel: Oh dear, well on our VERY first gig, at the Balcony Bar in Dundee, Ihad a sore throat. To clarify I could barely speak, let alone sing. Any note Itried to hit just withered into a faint whisper. It had been that way for aweek beforehand, wed all hoped for improvement but if anything it gotworse.

Andrew: Yeah, Ive never heard you lose your voice, at least not to thatextent.

Daniel: Yeh, Ive only ever been that bad twice, ever. Though we took it as agood stroke of luck that the Balcony, as a venue is typically not the best forhearing vocals, which is just as well, because there werent really any vocalsto hear anyway. We still got commended for the performance, but it was kindof a blow to my confidence.

Andrew: Other than that I think weve had very few major problems on

stage. When it comes to the best experience? Um... I guess it might be ourmost recent gig, there were quite a few other bands there, but the crowdgave the impression that they were there to see us, they were soenthusiastic and supportive, and it really made the whole evening verymemorable. I think the band andthe crowd is what really makes a gig, itsdefinitely a two-way kind of thing.

BFTD 8. Do you have any funny or weird story to share with thereaders?

Daniel: For me it has to be the way in which I joined the band. My brotherintroduced me to Age of Element, who at that time had a vocalist known asDowney, when my brother asked me what I thought of them I said that Iliked the music, but the vocals were very poor, I joked that even I could singbetter than he could, and the next thing I knew Chris is phoning me up,asking me to audition for the band.

Andrew: I think its also funny how I joined, with about a weeks practice ofbass guitar I came along to a jamming session at Chriss house, and pickedup the bass-lines quickly enough, so that was me in I guess, with a weeksworth of experience.

Greg: Ohh man, one time we did this open mic night at Dundee Union, theguitar I had was incredibly out of tune, and for whatever reason at the time Ididnt really notice it, despite the fact Daniel and Chris were both trying tocatch my attention. Didnt go well, haha.

BFTD 9. How many gigs do you play in a year and do you tour muchabroad?

Band: Well, weve just started gigging properly in the past couple of months,

but now well have a full line-up, were hoping well get a gig every week ortwo, and make it a regular thing. As for touring abroad, it would be anawesome thing to do, but I think wed really need to build up more of a fan-

    21/39

    21

base first, and tour with another band, but it would certainly be a really coolthing to do.

BFTD 10. What is the best thing about being in a band?

Andrew: I personally think the best thing is actually getting all the ideas in

your head made, and whats even better, played live, though none of mysongs have been yet it looks like thats coming really soon, we have a gig onChristmas Eve, and its looking like my most recent song is going to getplayed there, which I think could be a definite highlight of the wholeexperience for me. But really, as long as youre in the right band, which Ifeel we all are, its all enjoyable.

Daniel: For me its the thrill of getting your music out there, getting peoplelistening, with their spare time, out of their own free will to listen to musicweve made. There was recently a girl who left a message on MySpace about

how incredibly awesome she thought we were. If weve managed to havethat effect on even one person, to me, thats a brilliant thing.I also find music is the best release for any and all negative feelings.

    Andrew: Agreed.

Chris: I just love gigging, recording, writing, the whole process really. Ireally like seeing how everyones ideas come together because everyone hasa really different taste, and you get a bit of everyone in each song, it justmakes our overall sound more unique.

Greg: For me its the challenge of keeping your music the way you initiallywanted it to be, whilst at the same time, getting the hooks just right, in thehope that you might get the hooks just right to get people into the song, without compromising your sound.

Chris: And solos are always a good part of it too.

    Greg: Haha, yeah.

BFTD 11. If you could have anything (as a group) what would it be?

Band: Our own studio, so we could record anything and everything, all thetime. Really, wed be in there every single day!But on a more general basis I think we just want to connect with people insome way, itd be great to really make a positive impact on anybody, like somany bands have to us.

BFTD 12. Any final comments for the BFTD readership?

Band: This is going to sound ridiculously clichd, but we want to thank

anyone and everyone who has taken the time to listen to our music. In thewords Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers; if you like our music, god blessyou, and if you dont, yknow what? God bless you too.

BFTD 1. What is your line up, how did the group begin and how longhave you been working together?

Our band line-up, Edward Tuffin-Rhythm Guitar And Vocals. Jack Taylor-LeadGuitar And Vocals, Harry Gries-Bass Guitar And Backing Vocals and DanPugh-Drums. Weve been together as a band for coming up to 3 years now !

Which is pretty long for a group of teenagers, but its been great every stepof the way. We basically started as friends who wanted to make music andjust jam out their favourite tunes! And it just basically went from there.

BFTD 2. What are the biggest influences in your music and how doyou ensure that there is enough of you in your sound to bedifferent?

Our musical influences tend to vary a lot, cause each band member listens todifferent music. Between us it ranges from like alpha beat to extreme death

metal! Which is quite a difference to be honest. But for our sound, we takeinfluences frommodern rock/indie! Which isalways a greatcombination. Withevery song weright we try tomake it differentfrom the next, soeverything

doesnt get tosimilar, And Ithink we haveprobably achievedthat! But most ofthe songs havegood hooks andare very catchy!

BFTD 3. What would you say your biggest achievements to date havebeen?

Probably winning the Urdd eisteddfod two years in a row! That was prettycool; considering none of us speak welsh either. Maybe also playing our firstproper festival (Workhouse Festival).

BFTD 4. What are your thoughts on the state of the music industryright now?

Well it depends what part of the music industry you look at, if you look at themainstream side of it. Its mainly dominated by talent competitions, which

isnt the way to go in my opinion. You dont get to enjoy the highs andlows of being in a band, theexperience of gigging all of thatstuff. Theyre just looking for aquick way to the top, which is purely

rubbish I think. I think people arestarting to see through that, yousee loads of facebook groups, saying Hijack the x factor no1 andall that. So I think it wont be toolong before it all goes titsup forthem. Personally im looking forwardto seeing Simon cowell fall flat onhis face! But on the bright side, ifyou look at the indie/rock/emo

scene, theres some great bandsemerging from all over the world itsreally great to see, that loads ofpeople are getting into music andenjoying it.

BFTD 5. What do you see as achievable goals within the nexteighteen months?

Probably just get bigger in our local areas tobe honest, sell a few cds on the way and justplay as many gigs as we possibly can!

BFTD 6. How does the writing processwork? Do individuals come withcomplete songs or do you work togetherto create your music?

It honestly really varies from song to song; itcan either range from straight up guitar riffs.Or we start with lyrics and go from there.

Most songs we write, are guitar based tostart with, but we all chip in with differentideas, what songs good what doesnt etc. Youneed to do that in bands to get the best outof the song. You cant have one person doingeverything in a band; it has to be done as ateam. And I think we do that quite well to behonest.

BFTD 7. What is the bands worst experience on stage and what has

    been your best?

I dont think weve had a worst experience, none that comes to mind

    Dan the drummer

anyway. The only thing I can think of is when we were trying to set up, anddifferent leads and pedals stopped working, that was bad, cause we were ina rush to set up anyway. When stuff stops working it puts even morepressure on you. Our best experiencehas been when were at the urdd, wealways manage to pull something

special off down there. Its alwaysreally tight, and almost always soundsawesome.

BFTD 8. Do you have any funny orweird story to share with thereaders?

Well I suppose its related to the 3rd

song we ever wrote. Its called Jackie

Chimp. It all started, when I (Jack),moved into my brothers old room, when he moved out. We were justthere one band practice, and we cameacross a whole batch of thesemagazines. There were all sorts, inthere; it ranged from cars, to musicto Well you can guess that one.Inside one of these magazines, was apicture of a fine young model, if I rememberrightly, on the other side was a picture of a chimp in a kung fu suit, with thetitle Jackie chimp so being us, we decided to write a song about it! Howcreative we are ;)

BFTD 9. How many gigs do you play in a year and do you tour muchabroad?

We probably play around 15 in a year im guessing, but weve never toured. Were way too young to tour. Maybe when were older, we might consider it,but its so much organisation, and at the moment, were just not ready toenter something like that.

BFTD 10. What is the best thing about being in a band?

The After Parties! Haha! Nah, its great playing music with your friends, thatwhat I enjoy the most to be honest.

BFTD 11. If you could have anything (as a group) what would it be?

A bloody record deal! Maybe a world tour swell ;)BFTD 12. Any final comments for the BFTD readership?

BFTD 1. What is your line up, how did the group begin and how longhave you been working together?

It all started in November 2008. Biz-E was starting to get sick of the wholesolo rap stuff and was missing sharing the stage with a full band. After re-cently performing as a guest vocalist, with our good friends Dead Message,

at a local Battle of the bands, which Buck was also competing with his oldband Inferi. So Benthen approachedBuck and asked himif he wanted to joina band...It all really camefrom that then Buckgot in touch with afellow work col-

league Adam Joneswho joined as Leadguitarist and goodfriend Ben Snowdenwho joined on bass.Weeks past record-ings happened andBen Snowden de-cided he was cur-rently toocommited with his

other band Kill To Gain. So Jonesy then drafted in good friend Bryn Price onsecond guitar and electronics to thicken up the sound. Bryn then got intouch with old friend Joe Dinsdale who joined as our current bassist. Fewmore weeks past and Bryn decided to quit the band. Ben, Joe, Adam andBuck were then JustDEFY and gigged, recorded as much as possible over2009 until recently Adam Jones also quit the band due to his other bandbeing more his style of music.

We are currently auditioning for a Lead guitarist so if you can help us pleaseget in touch!

BFTD 2. What are the biggest influences in your music and how doyou ensure that there is enough of you in your sound to be differ-ent?

Our influences are never ending, both musically and inspirational there is abrief list on our myspace...

BFTD 3. What would you say your biggest achievements to date havebeen?

Winning Band for the day, Playing at Bradford Mela Festival, Getting into theplay offs for Bingley Music Live.

BFTD 4. What are your thoughts on the state of the music industryright now?

Interesting! everything needs to change and freshen up every now and thenpeople should stop complaining and run with the times!!

BFTD 5. What do you see as achievable goals within the next eight-een months?

Finally record our 6 track E.P with goodfriend Simon Mawson and hopefully getsome local tours sorted out also finish thecouple of music videos we've kind ofstarted

BFTD 6. How does the writing processwork? Do individuals come with com-plete songs or do you work togetherto create your music?

We usually work together from one ofBen's initial ideas we all sort out the partsfor our own instruments.

BFTD 7. What is the bands worst ex-perience on stage and what has beenyour best?

We absolutley love playing live its what were all about! but we have had our

fair share of electronical let downs and empty crowds :(. Playing at the PMBar for the Bingley Music Live Final was really good fun! as was coming sec-ond in this years Battle Of The Bands.
