Exercise A Over the years an increasing number of people have been moving from rural areas or villages to live in urban areas or large towns. The difference between figures in the Population Census of 1991 and 2000 reveal that the number of people who live in the urban areas has increased from 50.7% to 62%. In large cities such as Kuala Lumpur, 100% of the population live in urban areas. Selangor comes second with 87.6% of its population urban 80.1% urban dwellers. Why do people flock to live in urban areas? A few of the obvious reasons are the facilities and amenities that are available there that are not available in villages and small towns. Towns also have roads, housing and transport systems that are better planned. Large towns also offer more education and job opportunities. For those looking to relax and enjoy themselves, towns offer all types of entertainment from shopping in huge shopping malls to playing in water theme parks. It is no wonder then, that it is mainly the younger generation that is moving or migrating from rural areas to urban areas. They are looking for the opportunities that their kampong cannot offer them. On the other hand, many of the older folk prefer the quieter and relaxing lifestyle of a village. They do not like the stress and hectic pace of life that are synonymous with living in the city.
