EATING 11,000 bananas a year at a cost of $20,000 – could this be the world’s most expensive diet? A Queensland couple have attracted thousands of followers to their 30 Bananas A Day diet, despite the sky-high price of the fruit. Before Queensland’s summer of wild weather forced up prices, Harley Johnson and his partner, who goes by the name Freelee Fitrawvegan, were spending just $40 a week for bananas from organic wholesalers. But they say they are now spending $600 a week to maintain their banana habit. On a typical day, Mr Johnson bumps his intake up to 40 bananas, but boasts a personal record of 72 large cavendish bananas in a single day. The couple average about 46kg of organic bananas a week at a cost of about $13 a kilo. If the pair were to stick to the plan for a whole year at current prices, they would have consumed almost 2400kg of bananas at a total cost of more than $30,000. ‘‘It is outrageous but we are banana addicts,’’ said Mr Johnson, a vegan for 10 years. ‘‘We eat similar amounts to monkeys and we have that sort of energy as well. ‘‘I have friends who live in million-dollar houses and they say, ‘Harley we can’t afford to eat like that’. Freelee said the diet also advocated eating a variety of foods, such as dates and greens. The pair regularly post blood test results online to prove to critics that their potassium levels were normal. But leading Australian nutritionist Dr Rosemary Stanton warned the high-fibre content of the diet would give many people a bad case of diarrhoea. ‘‘I would be very concerned if pregnant women, children or anyone with diabetes or pre-diabetes were following such a lack of balance,’’ she said. Superbug on its way Expert warns strain will spread through human contact Kelmeny Fraser Consumer affairs A LEADING Queensland re- searcher has warned it is only a matter of time before a mutant strain of E coli that has killed at least 19 people in Europe reaches Australia. Professor Matthew Cooper is one of a team of University of Queensland academics searching for new treatments to combat superbugs able to resist antibiotics, including the E coli strain sparking panic across Europe and the US. ‘‘Clearly the larger this out- break gets in Europe, the more likely it is that someone will bring it to Australia,’’ Prof Cooper said. First detected in Germany, the latest strain has affected 1600 people in 11 countries across Europe and the US, including 470 who have devel- oped kidney failure. The World Health Organis- ation has described the out- break as a new mutant strain with characteristics more viru- lent than seen before. Health officials warn the scale of the outbreak could be catastrophic, with the British Health Protection Agency warning last week that the strain was at risk of spreading from person to person. The European outbreak was believed to be food borne, but researchers hunting for the source remain stumped. Prof Cooper said the bac- teria, which originated in Africa, had picked up deadly new genes: the Shiga toxin, which can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, and a viru- lence gene, allowing it to stick more tightly to the stomach. The strain can cause internal bleeding, kidney fail- ure, diarrhoea, and fever. Prof Cooper said it was likely to be carried to Australia by a person and spread human to human. ‘‘As we use more antibiotics inappropriate in animals, there are just more of these resistant genes around.’’ He has called for a ban on antibiotics in livestock feed and mandatory reporting by hospitals of superbug out- breaks. President of the German Nephrology Society Reinhard Brunkhorst said late last week the number of new infections appeared to be stabilising. However, experts are also concerned about two new golden staph strains in Europe.
