Your Guide to Public Transportation in South Orange is hot off the press!
Please pick up your complimentary copy at the management office.
…South Orange enjoys the benefits of an excellent public transportation system.
South Orange On the Go! has developed Your Guide to Public Transportation to help South
Orange’s senior citizens understand available transportation resources.
Using public transportation is a safe and economical way to visit family and friends and to
travel to stores, restaurants, doctors’ offices and many other destinations. Riding on the bus
can be much easier than fighting traffic and searching for a parking space.
Public transportation helps us maintain our independence and self-sufficiency because it
allows us to travel wherever and whenever we choose. We can make our own travel
decisions without having to rely on other people.
The Township and local organizations have helped develop this Guide. Organizations
include the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, JCC MetroWest & The Jewish
Community Housing Corporation. Major funding for South Orange On the Go! was provided
by a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater MetroWest NJ.

A sweet slice of summer,
On a hot a afternoon,
The perfect treat to eat outside,
You don’t even need a spoon.
As you take a big old bite,
Feel the juice begin to run,
Be careful not to eat the seeds,
You spit those out, for fun!
A slice of watermelon,
Just can’t be beat,
It is the taste of summer,
Juicy and sweet!

I will begin by giving
you a little anatomy
regarding your large
intestine. The large
intestine is divided
into 4 parts, the
ascending colon,
transverse colon,
descending colon and
the sigmoid colon.
The large colon
removes water, salt,
and some nutrients
by squeezing its
contents forming
stool.
Diverticulosis is the
formation of small
pouches in the lining
of the colon that bulge
outward through
weak spots
occurring more
commonly in the
sigmoid colon. When
they become inflamed
the condition is
known as
diverticulitis.
Approximately 10% of
Americans over the
age of 40 have
diverticulosis which
increases with age.
About half of all
people more than 60
years of age have
diverticulosis.
SYMPTOMS OF
DIVERTICULOSIS:
Some people do not
have discomfort while
others may.
Crampy pain
Discomfort in the
lower abdomen
Complaints of
bloating or
constipation.
Needless to say if
these symptoms
persist you need to
visit your Health
Care Provider for a
definitive diagnosis
About 15-25% of those
who are symptomatic
will go on to develop
diverticulitis; another
5-15% will develop
diverticulitis with
bleeding.
SYMPTOMS OF
DIVERTICULITIS:
Abdominal pain
Tenderness in the
lower left side of the
abdomen
Intensity of pain may
be mild to severe with
fluctuations
Pain may develop
suddenly without
warning
Nausea
Vomiting
Fever
Chills
Constipation or
diarrhea
Approximately 85%
respond to medical
treatment while
another 15% will
ultimately require
surgery.
CAUSES:
Most prevalent theory
is attributed to a
lower than normal
diet
Constipation which
may cause the lining
of the colon to bulge
out through
weakened spots
leading to diverticula
Lack of exercise
HOW IS IT
DIAGNOSED?
Usually found during
a routine colonoscopy
If there is a suspicion
of diverticulitis your
PCP might order
additional tests such
as Abdominal
Ultrasound in
conjunction with a
Ct Scan
WHAT YOU
CAN DO:
Eat a high-fiber diet
Keep active
Avoid constipation
POINTS TO
REMEMBER:
Diverticulosis occurs
when small pouches
bulge through
weakened areas in
the large colon.
Most people never
have symptoms
Avoiding constipation
will eliminate
pressure inside the
lining of the colon
wall
Most common cause
is low-fiber diet
Fiber intake consists
of...
whole grain breads
and cereals
fruits like apples,
peas, raspberries,
stewed prunes.
vegetables like
squash, sweet potato,
peas, spinach, turnip
greens, cauliflower
Diverticulitis causes
pain and tenderness
usually in the lower
left side of the
abdomen.
Diverticulitis can lead
to bleeding, infection,
small tears in the
colon of blockages
Complications require
immediate treatment
to prevent
progression.
Severe cases likely
cause hospital stay
and possibly surgical
intervention for those
who do not respond to
medication.
