BALPURE® BALLAST WATER TREATMENT

BALLAST WATER FILTER

A ballast water treatment system cannot be effective without a filter.

In order to remove hard shell organisms, a filter is

required in a ballast water treatment system. A ballast

water treatment system cannot be effective without a

filter. The BALPURE® system features a self-cleaning

ballast water filter that is essential to effectively treat

ballast water.

Severn Trent De Nora has approved multiple filters

for use with the BALPURE system. Following rigorous

engineering and testing, disc filters have been

eliminated from the BALPURE scope of supply and

only screen filters are offered. The BALPURE standard

scope of supply will include a 40-micron self-cleaning

filter for performance and compliance with the IMO D-2

standards.

The most appropriate filter is selected based on the

configuration and constraints of the vessel requiring

ballast water treatment.

- Vertical or horizontal configuration

- Nozzle(s) orientation and size(s)

- Piping configuration

- Available space in the main auxiliary area

BALLAST WATER TREATMENT

Existing IMO guidelines provide a recommendation for

filtration in order to prevent silt/ sediment accumulation

in ballast tanks. IMO G12 Guideline, paragraph

4.6, recommends installing equipment to remove

suspended matter at the point of uptake. Furthermore,

the discharge of sediments is prohibited.

The BALPURE ballast water filter fully addresses these

issues. The entire ballast water stream is passed

through the ballast water filter to remove and reject

large organisms back to the uptake location and

greatly reduce the accumulation of silt/sediments in

the ballast water tanks.

Filter PlacementFor tankers and carriers with conventional pump

rooms or submersible pumps the filter will be the only

item fitted outside the main and auxiliary machinery

spaces. For these applications the filters would be

fully specified to meet ATEX rules governing the

carriage and transportation of hazardous cargoes. All

BALPURE systems are supplied with a self-cleaning

filter as part of the standard supply.

For bulk carriers, container ships or similar vessels

all equipment will be fitted into the main or auxiliary

machinery spaces.

Filter ComponentsThe internal components of the ballast water filter are

configurable in several options. The most economicalinternal wetted materials are 316 stainless steel.

However, Super Duplex stainless steel is available

as an option to ensure longer lifespan with reduced

maintenance.
