RICH MALONEYHead Coach

CARDINAL COACHES

Rich Maloney returned as head coach of the Ball State baseball team for the 2013 season, having spent a previous stint coaching the Cardinals from 1996-2002.

In 2017, Maloney led Ball State to 30 wins for the fifth consecutive season. The Cardinals won 14 of their final 18 league games last year to finish in a tie for second in the Mid-American Conference West Division.

The 2016 season was another successful one for Ball State as the Cardinals won the MAC West Division title for the second time in three years. Maloney helped guide outfielder Alex Call to MAC Player of the Year accolades. Following the season, four Cardinals were taken in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, the most by any school in the MAC. Not only did Ball State produce on

the field, but also in the classroom. Two players were named first team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans – Call and Caleb Stayton.

In 2015, the Cardinals made a late season surge and reached the 2015 MAC Tournament championship game. Maloney led Ball State to the 2014 Mid-American Conference regular season championship, a MAC West Division title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the 2014 Collegiate Baseball Poll and won their first conference regular season title since Maloney led them to the title in 2001. For his efforts, Maloney was named the MAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career (1998, 2001, 2014).

In 2013, Maloney led Ball State to a 31-

CARDINAL COACHES

24 overall record, a 15-12 MAC mark and an appearance in the MAC Tournament championship game. The 31-24 record marked the eighth best turnaround in the NCAA from 2012 to 2013 and helped Ball State to a second-place finish in the MAC West Division. Maloney helped pitcher Scott Baker win the 2013 Gregg Olson Award as the nation’s comeback player of the year and coached six members of the 2013 team to Academic All-MAC recognition.

In his second stint with the Cardinals, Maloney set the school’s all-time record for wins when he won his 324th game at Ball State. Maloney’s

record-setting win came in a 4-1 victory at Northern Illinois in a game where his son Alex Maloney recorded his first career save for the Cardinals. In his first stint at Ball State, Maloney amassed a 256-144-1 (.640) overall record in seven years, including a 141-60 (.701) ledger in MAC games. Maloney guided the Cardinals to four MAC West Division titles (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001) and three MAC regular season championships (1998, 1999, 2001). Maloney also led the Ball State baseball program to the only two 40-win seasons in program history - - 42 in 1999 and 40 in 1997 - - and was named the 1998 and 2001 MAC Coach of the Year.

Prior to returning to Ball State, Maloney served as the head baseball coach at Michigan for 10 seasons, guiding the Wolverines to a 341-244 overall record. He led Michigan to three Big Ten Conference titles, two Big Ten Tournament titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was also named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney also guided the Wolverines to Big Ten Tournament berths in seven of his 10 seasons, including a streak of six straight from 2003-08. His teams also made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008).

Over his 23-year career as a collegiate head coach, Maloney has mentored 57 different players who have been drafted, including five first round draft picks, with all five playing at Ball State. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No.1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history in any sport when he was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Later the same day, Luke Hagerty was chosen with the 32nd overall pick by the Chicago Cubs in the supplemental first round, giving Maloney two first round draft picks in the same season.

“From day one, Coach began to change not only me, but the entire culture of the Ball State baseball program. With him, he brought a new mindset and passion to the program. As a player, every moment became an opportunity to not only grow as a player but as a man too. I consider Coach to be my mentor and I attribute much of my success to his teachings. Whether you needed some help with your swing, some motivation, or just someone to talk to, Coach was there for me whenever I needed it. I am very fortunate to have played for Coach Maloney for two years and value our friendship today.”

SEAN GODFREY, 2013 MAC Player of the Year, All-American, Atlanta Braves Draft Pick

CARDINAL COACHES

A third-team All-American as a senior shortstop at Western Michigan, Maloney earned a bachelor’s degree in 1986 from Western Michigan. A two-time captain and two-time All-MAC first-team selection, Maloney was twice named to the all-district squad. A 13th-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves in 1986, Maloney spent six seasons in the Atlanta Braves organization, earning all-star status in the Appalachian League for the Pulaski Braves and in the South Atlantic League for the Sumter Braves. He played for former Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox manager Grady Little before retiring from pro baseball following the 1991 season at Greenville (AA). He served as an assistant coach for legendary Fred Decker at Western Michigan from 1992-95 before accepting the head coaching position at Ball State in May 1995.

Maloney, and his wife, the former Kelle Lynn Seitz, have two sons -- Alex and Nicholas -- and one daughter, Natalie. Alex is playing professional baseball in the Chicago White Sox organization.

CARDINAL HISTORY

Bryan Bullington, who was coached at Ball State by current Cardinals’ head coach Rich Maloney, was the No. 1 selection in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates and is the highest draft pick in Ball State and Mid-American Conference history. Bullington made his major league debut in 2005 for the Pirates. After sitting out the 2006 season with an injury, Bullington worked his way back up to the Triple-A All-Star Game in 2007 and was called up to the Pirates later that season, appearing in five games with three starts. Bullington pitched for the Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays in 2008. He stayed in the Blue Jays system in 2009 and in 2010 reported to the Kansas City Royals Spring Training. On Aug. 15, 2010, Bullington pitched eight shutout innings, while only giving up two hits against the New York Yankees in Kansas City for his first major league win. After the 2010 season, Bullington signed with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp of Japan’s Central League. Bullington played for Hiroshima for four seasons before moving to the Orix Buffaloes of Japan’s Pacific League in 2015.

Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the Mid-American Conference has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio. The MAC was founded as a five-school league on Feb. 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The current Mid-American Conference membership consists of 12 universities across five states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York and Ohio).

In baseball, Ohio used a six run explosion in the eigth inning of the 2017 MAC championship game to claim a 7-4 win over Eastern Michigan.

Once again in 2018, the MAC Tournament will be held at Sprenger Stadium in Avon, Ohio, which is also home to the Lake Erie Crushers of the Frontier League. Ball State has advanced to the title game twice in the last five years.

Only one MAC baseball player earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors last year and that was Bal State’s Caleb Stayton.

The Cardinals led all MAC baseball teams with four players selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft. Overall, 15 MAC players were selected in that draft led by Kent State pitcher Eric Lauer, who was taken in the first round by the San Diego Padres. Alex Call was Ball State’s highest pick as he was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the third round.

THE MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE

CARDINAL HISTORY

Ball State began as a private normal school in 1899. Eventually the campus and buildings were purchased by the Ball brothers, a group of Muncie industrialists, and given to the state of Indiana in 1918.

The institution was named Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The school became a university in 1965 and its 660-acre residential campus now includes more than

60 buildings and 300 additional acres of research property.

Ball State has eight academic colleges and a graduate school with over 190 majors offered, including business, education, sport administration, telecommunications, exercise science, criminal justice, communication studies, journalism, political science and construction management.
