Joanna Saleem enters her third year as Ball State’s head women’s gymnastics coach in 2014-15, building on a vast coaching experience with high level NCAA teams.
In her first season, Saleem led the Cardinals to a fifth place showing at the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships -- the highest finish for Ball State since the 2011 season. Under her guidance, then sophomore Denasiha Christian tallied a 9.925 on the floor exercise to win the MAC Floor Championship. Christian was named to the 2014 All-MAC Second Team and the MAC All-Tournament Team.
“Throughout the 2013-14 season, we believe it was important to teach each of our student-athletes how to be consistent in performance, both in the practice gym and on the competition floor not only as individuals but more importantly as a team,” Saleem said. “It is about laying out expectations for the program and helping these young ladies understand they need to be competitive in the classroom, in the gym and in their personal lives as they strive for excellence and never giving up.”
The 2014 season saw the Cardinals earn one MAC Gymnast of the Week, two MAC Specialists of the Week and defeat Big 10 Conference opponent Iowa. The Cardinals posted the highest team beam score since 2004, while 24 career high scores were recorded by the student-athletes.

ASSISTANT COACH
ASSISTANT COACH
Justin Wolford was named Ball State’s women’s gymnastics assistant coach beginning with the 2013-14 season.
Wolford spent 2010-13 as the head coach and vice president at Flights Gymnastics where he led athletes in training, conditioning and preparation for competition. In addition, Wolford managed the program’s quarterly budgets, planning activities and college recruiting.
In 2007, Wolford served as an assistant coach at Central Michigan, while spending the 2005 and 2006 campaigns as the head gymnastics coach at Rockford High School.
Brittany Montalbano joined the Ball State gymnastics coaching staff prior to the 2015-16 season.
Montalbano competed for Texas Woman’s University, where she was a part of five runner-up teams at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships. She was an all-conference performer on the floor in 2014.
A Scholastic All-American, Montalbano earned her bachelor’s degree in 2013 and completed her MBA at TWU in 2015.

P aul W. Ferguson began his service as the 15th president of Ball State University in August 2014. An accomplished scholar with a record of achievement spanning more
than three decades, President Ferguson has a demonstrated record of transforming universities, especially in the areas of academic quality and student success, increased research and economic development, partnerships between the university and community, and faculty development.
Since his arrival at Ball State University, President Ferguson has initiated a new and refreshed vision for Ball State as well as a refocused strategic plan in preparation for the institution’s 100th anniversary, The Centennial Commitment (18 by ’18). President Ferguson has encouraged campus constituencies to embrace the legacy of beneficence and spirit of entrepreneurship by promoting the good in and for others in a learning environment of creativity, nurtured risk, and success. Under President Ferguson’s leadership, Ball State “aspires to be the model of the most student-centered and community-engaged of the 21st Century public research universities transforming entrepreneurial learners into impactful leaders-committed to improving the quality of life for all.”
Prior to his arrival at Ball State, he served for three years as President of the University of Maine. As President, Dr. Ferguson led a remarkable strategic planning process known as the Blue Sky Project, which was created to promote student success and community service. The Blue Sky Project
succeeded quickly as an inclusive, creative, and integrated approach to campus planning and implementation. The University enjoyed unprecedented success in facilities improvements, undergraduate student recruitment, retention, and graduation rates.
Before assuming the Presidency, Dr. Ferguson served in several strategic leadership positions including Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville; Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at the University of Louisiana, Monroe.
PRESIDENT PAUL W. FERGUSONPresident Ferguson began his academic career as Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Louisiana, Monroe (ULM) College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. There, he established the first undergraduate toxicology program in the South while leading research and outreach efforts aimed at assessing potential risks form chemical exposures throughout Louisiana. After five years working as Senior Toxicologist for Unocal Corp. in Los Angeles, he returned to ULM where he received awards for teaching and research excellence as Professor and Head of the Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Dr. Ferguson has been continuously certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology since 1985.
A Southern California native, President Ferguson
graduated from Whittier College with a B.A. in Biology (Highest Honors) and later earned a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of California, Davis in 1981.
President Ferguson and his wife, First Lady Grace Ferguson, have been married for 40 years and have three children. Dr. David Ferguson, the eldest, is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at Michigan State University. The Ferguson’s second child, Dr. Kathryn Bowman, is a resident physician living in New York City with her husband, Bobby Bowman, a Doctoral Candidate in cancer biology at Sloan Kettering. Jenny Desmond, the youngest, who with her husband, Logan Desmond, are graduate students at Ball State University in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education and Sports Administration, respectively.

Ball State began as a private normal school in 1899. Eventually the campus and buildings were purchased by the Ball brothers, a group of Muncie industrialists, and given to the state of Indiana in 1918.
The institution was named Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929. The school became a university in 1965 and its 660-acre residential campus now includes more than 60 buildings and 300 additional acres of research property.
Ball State has seven academic colleges and a graduate school with over 150 majors offered, including business, education, sport administration, telecommunications, exercise science, criminal justice, communication studies, journalism, political science and construction management.
