SPECIAL CHILDREN COMMITTEE

ROTARY CLUB OF MANILA BRINGS THE MAGIC OF HALLOWEEN TO HOSPICO DE SAN JOSE

The ever changing weather of October 26, 2017 did not scare the spook out of the fine gentlemen of Asia’s First Rotary Club as they trooped to the gymnasium of the Hospicio de San Jose in Manila. Having barely taken a breather from the club’s weekly luncheon meeting at the New World Makati Hotel in Makati City, they braved the afternoon traffic from Makati City to Manila to bring cheers to the orphans and elderlies of the Hospicio de San Jose. Under the leadership of Special Children Committee

Chair PD Philip Ong, Co-Chair Rtn. Ray Davis and Member, Rtn. Leo Peter Gonzales, snacks and all types of fun brought smiles to the faces of our community at the Hospicio de San Jose. Both orphans and elderly alike felt the warmth of family they have long been yearning for years in an afternoon of playful camaraderie in the season of spirits. Kindred spirits if you may, Manila

12

Rotarians aside from organizers PD Philip Ong and Rtn. Ray Davis, included President Jimmie Policarpio, IPP Teddy Ocampo, Dir. Caloy Reyes, PAT Hermie Esguerra, PD Beda Fajardo, PS Jorge Salazar and PT Jim Chua. It was, indeed, Trick or Treat at

its finest unholy hour as the afternoon heat and intermittent overcast skies did not dampen the determination of the country’s oldest Rotary club from making its mark in the minds and hearts of the community at the Hospicio de San Jose who will forever

remember that Service Above Self is really bent on Making A Difference.

ONE ROTARY ONE PHILIPPINES ONE FOR MARAWI

ONE ROTARY ONE PHILIPPINES ONE FOR MARAWI MEDICAL AND DENTAL MISSION MESSAGE OF THANKS One big THANK YOU from “One Rotary, One Philippines, One for Marawi”

Congratulations and thank you to all who made the medical missions to Saguiaran, Lanao Sur and Baloi, Lanao Norte possible. That was the first of many more medical missions ahead which is one component of Rotary’s 2-year legacy humanitarian assistance program to include: providing prosthesis, water, sanitation and PTSD treatment. There are so many more people to serve.

A lot of organizations and people contributed to this first medical mission:

1. The Rotary Clubs of Manila, Quiapo Central, Tondo, Quirino, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ranao, Marawi, Valencia and the incumbent/incoming district governors (Loy Cosico/Rudy Bediones of District 3810; Linda Deleste/Frank Manga of District 3870) and their tireless and

efficient staff;

2. Team Humanity led by Bong Ano who provided the logistical support, internal security and links to the traditional leaders of Marano society;

3. PAL Chairman Lucio Tan and President Jimmy Bautista and their staff and Foundation for all the all-important free passage of our medical team and cargo;

4. Don Juan Montel of the Spanish Aid agency Beneficiensa;

5. Iligan Mayor Celso Regencia and Patrick Nunez; DOT ASEC Ricky Alegre and RD10 May Unchuan representing DOT Sec. Wanda Teo; and Gloria Macaraeg for arranging the whole team to stay in the spacious and charming Macapagal residence in Iligan;

6. The officers and men of the 6ID and PNP PSPO who secured and escorted us from start to finish, and during our previous fact-finding, ocular and coordination trips;

7. The female hijab warriors of the PNP and AFP who controlled the medical mission areas;

8. RCM DE Jackie Rodriguez supported by PDG Lyne Abanilla, Ms. Darlene Lamis and Dr. Capt Sharon Reyes for coordinating with PAL to ensure that all passengers and cargo were lifted from and to Manila;

9. Dr. Sr. Eva Maamo and Dr. Capt Reyes for gathering the medicines and medical supplies from various

donors (over 1 ton was brought for this mission), and for organizing the medical teams from their hospital

and clinic that augmented the doctors and nurses fielded by the local Rotary Clubs, the DOH and the

LGUs of Marawi, Saguiaran and Baloi.

10. Rotarian Abe Pascual; Unilab’s Ritemed/Pharex; and Caritas that donated additional medicines that

are being gathered for the next medical mission in November.

We had lots of moving parts; each one performed superbly as expected sacrificing their time, talent and

treasure in the service of others. Minus the usual minor bugs and glitches that were eventually resolved

on the spot through teamwork, I’d give our first medical mission a rating of 90%.

Weather was beyond our control which hampered the Saguiaran leg; only 818 were served. But the

conditions in Baloi were a marked improvement allowing us to serve over 1,200 people. All in all, we

served over 2,000 patients but it could have been more as we prepared for 4,000 patients. Excess

medicines and supplies are being stored through the kindness of PDG Linda Deleste for the next mission

which likely be in Iligan and/or Cagayan de Oro.

While the medcaps were on-going, we paid courtesy calls on Marawi Mayor Majul Gandarma, Iligan

Mayor Celso Regencia, RLA Zia Adiong, and the Office of Civil Defense. The Mayors and Vice-Mayors of

24

Saguiaran and Baloi were nowhere to be found, while the AFP’s commanders on the ground were in

Manila for the AFP Chief of Staff turnover ceremony.

Distance and traffic due to security checkpoints, and point-of-distribution handling delayed or diverted the

meals for some doctors. There were minor leadership, followership and collaborative issues which are

normal in such undertakings but were resolved with timely interventions and empathy.

Bottom line: unity, solidarity and teamwork always wins the day for those who practice it. Congratulations

to all and thank you from RCM.

PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CARE

SAFETY REMINDERS BEFORE YOU HIT THE ROAD

Elias D. Adamos, M.D.

For sure, nobody wants to spoil the long drive to the province just because of some troubles and tribulations on the road. Here are some safety reminders: Quick mechanical check-over: Before you rush to get your bags packed, check on the

following even if your car is new. 1. Engine oil. Check your oil levels and refer on the date you’re due for an oil change. Look at your car owner’s manual for manufacturer-recommended oil-change intervals; 2. Transmission and differential fluids; 3. Hoses. At high temperatures, rubber hoses can leach out at a faster rate; 4. Belts. If they’re ragged, torn, cracked or showing the fiber cords, it’s time for a fresh one; 5. Engine coolant. Ask your maintenance advisor for the best coolant for your car; 6. Tire pressure and tread. Low tire pressure waste fuel. They cause tire to run hotter from the extra friction. Old tires may cause accidents in highway driving; 7. Battery. Don’t wait to be stranded because of a dead battery; 8. Brake system. Check your brake fluid. Inspect brake pads and brake shoe; and last but not the least, 9. Test the car. Turn off the radio. Listen for noises and feel for shakes. Safe Driving Tips (Source: Independent Traveler, June 19, 2017)

1. Before beginning a long drive, always get enough sleep and eat a snack or meal. Highly caffeinated beverages are not necessarily the best way to stay awake while driving.

2. Pull over and take breaks every couple of hours, even if you don’t feel sleepy. Grab a snack. Get some fresh air. Stretch your legs while walking around. If you need to, take a quick nap.

3. If you can, share the driving responsibilities with someone else. This will allow you to keep an eye on each other while driving.

4. If you do not have to pull over, move your vehicle off the road. Never park on the shoulder or in an emergency lane. 5. If you have to use your mobile phone, use a hands-free device. 6. Shame on you if you don’t know this: Never drink alcohol before your trip. Don’t drink and drive. 7. Check on the weather. Plan another route to avoid inclement weather. If the road has been severely damaged by

natural flooding, a minor detour could actually save you major time. 8. Use a smartphone app, such as Waze or Google maps to guide you around traffic jams, although this is not an ultimate

or hard and fast rule. GPS and other apps that give you directions are not infallible. Make use of your gut feel and instinct. If you have a printed map, bring it with you for back up.

9. If you’re driving a rental vehicle, familiarize yourself with the car and all of its equipment (horn, brakes, hazard lights, tools, etc.).

10. Lock all your valuables in the trunk or glove compartment. Robbers are tempted when valuables are at plain view. Stow all luggage in the trunk.

11. When traveling with kids, be sure to stop often, not just for snacks, but also for fun and some sightseeing. 12. Stock up on healthy snacks from the grocery store and not just those that are available in gas stations and convenient

stores. 13. On longer trips, keep some napkins, wet ones, flashlight, and first aid kit.
