Meeting with a painter: the mandalas and the relationship between man and theuniverse. Gamelan and Balinese dance workshop

Nyoman is a famous painter in Ubud and in Indonesia. He devotes himself to painting mandalas, that are meaningful symbolic structures, used in Tantric Buddhism as a support for meditation. The mandala is said to connect us to Heaven and Earth. Its contemplation can help usunderstand some of our internal conflicts that are often the symptoms of a life lacking inspirituality.

After a chat about the mandalas and the vedic symbolism in painting, we will visit the gallery ofNyoman. Then we will participate to a workshop about the gamelan (Balinese orchestra) andtraditional dance. We will actually play the instruments and learn the basic dance steps.

    Meeting with a spiritual healer

Pak Cok is currently recognized as one of the best healers in Bali. He is a member of the royalfamily and received initiations to Balinese traditional medicine, as was common among noblefamilies. He has also studied Tibetan and Japanese acupressure.

Its powers are recognized by the whole foreign community as well as by the Balinesethemselves. You can, if you so desire, receive a healing session during our visit or come backwith a translator.

    Meeting with a Balian

The "Balian," is the shaman, the sorcerer. The one who will provide you with his care, he is theson and grand-son of shamans. His father taught him his art from a young age but he refused hisdestiny until the day after he fell from a coconut tree when a spirit appeared to him requiring himto treat his first patient. For 15 years he has cured the inhabitants of surrounding villages.

He diagnoses through Hindu magical techniques, strongly reminiscent of Arabic practices. Thenhe heals through his "gift" and natural remedies made from the ingredients that abound aroundUbud: roots, fresh and dried herbs, dried fruits, animal parts and shredded bark ... Depending onyour needs our "naturopath" may suggest a cure for you ...

Experience has shown that these remedies are often effective. For example, we have seen kidney

stones misdiagnosed by the local hospital only to be healed by this Balian.

    Offerings

A Balinese ritual that brings daily peace of mind to the local people is the making and offering ofthe canang, little trays containing flowers. The Balinese love to make beautiful things for the sakeof beauty. They will offer the canangto the god for harmony and peace in the family, to bringbalance in human relationships, and more generally, the quietness of one`s own soul. During ourtrip, we will make one of these offerings.

    Consultation with an astrologer

In the rich Balinese families, each offspring received his horoscope at birth, as a "roadmap" set forlife. You can get yours too. First the priest establishes your date of birth in the Balinesecalendar. After complex calculations, he finds what was your last past life.

It is written on antique palm leaves, called lontars. The fate of your present life is to complete thecycles left unfinished during your last past life. Then, depending on your current protective god, your character and your future will be fullyrevealed. Time will tell whether these revelations resonate with you.

To receive your horoscope or a healing session please let us know when booking. It will bepossible to ask for one during the stay, but only if places are available. Please note that a healingor horoscope can take the most part of a day, given the time of transfer by car. So you can`tparticipate in group activities during this time.

    Sequence "Eat, Pray, Love"

We will also pay our respects to Wayan, the traditional naturopath, and to Ketut, the diviner, bothfamous in Ubud from the success of the book and film Eat, Pray, Love.

Ketut is also the neighbor of the painter Nyoman. Ketut has become an institution and receiveshundreds of visitors who come on pilgrimages in the footsteps of Elizabeth Gilbert or JuliaRoberts.

Meeting with a royal high priest

After a walk in a wild canyon, we arrive at the private temple of the royal family Kusuma to meetits high priest. We welcome a friendly discussion on the practical implications of the karmaconcept, but also about the practices of black magic in Bali.

Then we will make ourselves flower offerings before participating in a private ceremony duringwhich you can, if desired, receive the blessings of the royal high priest.

    Legong and Kecak Dance

Dance is another expression of the Balinese spirit. The subtle and graceful dance Legong and theshamanic dance of Kecak, whose choreography has been inspired by the trance dances that arean important part of many Balinese religious ceremonies.

While these dances relate episodes from the Mahabharata sacred text, they also represent all thefeelings of the Balinese about the struggles of good and evil, a duality that influences the delicatebalance that guarantees harmony within the village.

Delights". At sunset, we will have tea on the veranda of the Rajah.

    Ceremonies

We will participate in ceremonies that may arise during our stay: anniversary of the temples, weddings and cremations...

We will not be just spectators but active participants, for those who wish to do so. The Balinesehave no objection to outsiders joining them, providing that they comply with the rituals and rules ofclothing.

During several visits to temples, we will also be invited to integrate ourselves in the publicceremony in progress at the time of our visit.

    Pilgrimage to Besakih

Besakih temple is called the mother temple because it is the closest to the source of all waterirrigating the south side of Bali. Water, for the Balinese, is the source of life and the source of rice.

The volcano is the focal point of fire and air at 3142 meter of altitude.

This huge religious complex houses 12 temples of communities, in addition to the maintemple. Access is not permitted for tourists, but we are pilgrims and after attending a session ofpurification by a temple priest we will take some time to wander through the beautiful communitytemples, under the leadership of the priest.
