CRAFT&CULTURE

Bali is known as a home to many talented

artisans who have created world-class

masterpieces, and those include this

amazing craftsmanship of ceramics. Here we

look at the island’s best-known, finest and

innovative creators of handcrafted ceramics,

highly original collections that resemble works of art. Prices reflect

international standards, sheer style and longevity – lasting far

longer than holiday memories and contributing years of usage and

pleasure.

JENGGALAEstablished in 1976, one of the ‘original Bali artisans,’ Jenggala

emerged from a small family cottage industry in Sanur to one

of the foremost producers of high quality, hand-crafted ceramic

wares in Indonesia. Jenggala designs, manufactures and retails

stoneware and porcelain ceramics plus tabletop accessories

– mainly sold to five-star resorts and high-end retailers worldwide.

Their impressive showroom-exhibition building in Jimbaran is

visited daily by bus-loads of tourists, on the scout for exceptional

hand-finished ceramics. This extensive retail space displays the

TheCeramicCreationslatest Jenggala collections, conveniently displayed by color, style

and design. They also retail accessories like chopsticks, cutlery

and table linen to complement the home wares. Within the large

facility are also a research laboratory, funky-style warung-café,

and warehouse and production factory currently carrying 2,700

designs and 200 different glazes!

Over the years, Jenggala’s ceramics have been inspired by

Balinese charm, culture and craftsmanship, with frogs, chilies,

Goddess of Fertility and most celebrated, frangipani blooms in

the classic ‘Frangipani Collection’ tableware accessories being

popular recurring motifs. But Jenggala introduces new collections

every few months, expanding their product range while modifying

designs for contemporary use and style. Innovative recent

collections have seen a limited series of hand-painted pieces

depicting selected Batik patterns like Parang and Kawung –

originally reserved for exclusive use by members of Royal Families

in Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The ‘Picnic Collection’ is

a simplified Oriental line for portable dining with an elegant twist;

a contemporary set designed for convenience, neatly fitting into

a rattan picnic basket.

For wonderful home décor, classic souvenirs or gifts with an unusual twist, ceramics are a craft alternative to the usual batiks or carved woods. But Bali’s ceramics are even better buys when crafted by

talented and innovative creators to the highest of standards, and with not a ‘Bali’ stencil in sight.

‘high-end,’ as typically hospitable Italians visitors are welcome

anytime to take a personal guided tour of the GAYA nerve-centre.

KEVALA CERAMICSEstablished over twelve years ago by British owner-designer

Wendy Thomas, Kevala Ceramics is an exclusively made-to-order

stoneware ceramics company based in Sanur.

A contemporary and fresh design philosophy has earned

Kevala a reputation as one of Bali’s funkiest ceramic workshops; a

range entirely hand-made from selected clays and crafted by local

skilled artisans and designers.

Each Kevala piece aims to be a continuation of the finest

traditions of Balinese artistic flair, blending contemporary design

and traditional craftsmanship. It has a unique hand-made feel, but

adheres to the highest manufacturing standards. Stoneware is the

preferred medium, as Wendy and all creators will testify, “Its more

versatile body can handle numerous color ranges and textures,

plus it’s strong and durable.” “The Balinese are fantastic crafts

people,” she added.

Kevala’s modern-day functional shapes maximize a broad

spectrum of bold, sunshine colours – a strong trademark. Notable

collections are the signature Mediterranean-drenched ‘Swirl Range’

and ‘Starfish’ design collection in bright citrus with cobalt blue.

Stylish shapes made with a creative, globally-inspired spirit

include a spa and bathroom range featuring atomizers, burners

and soap dishes, plus Japanese tea sets and chunky Chinese-

style ginger pots. Exclusivity, not mass production, is one element

of their success story, with custom-made stoneware pieces for

five-star resorts and hotels, and fine-dining establishments. Kevala

Ceramics is comprised of a modern production facility, a recently

established art studio and importantly, a retail outlet – where

colourful pieces are tastefully showcased for an affordable treat.

CERAMIC CLASSNot only can you purchase these gorgeous ceramics, you can also

get hands-on involved in the ceramic culture and make your own

little creations, with a little help of course.

Jenggala’s ‘Make/Paint-a-Pot’ sessions encourage ‘Children

of hands-on craftsmanship and Balinese culture in our design

developments,” shares the Jenggala team. “We aim to provide

customers with a range of ceramic wares that both appeal and

endure.”

GAYA CERAMIC AND DESIGNHusband-and-wife team Marcello Massoni and Michela Foppiani

are the force behind high-end GAYA Ceramic and Design,

established in 2004. This Italian duo design and create hand-

made, luxurious and exclusive home and hospitality collections

of accessories in ceramic – using mediums such as stoneware,

porcelain and raku. Stylish, savvy GAYA work with one-off

commissions for the upscale discerning market – villas, hotels and

resorts and boutiques– infused with an unmistakable Italian flair.

“We don’t produce, we create,” stresses Massoni, “We work

on the edge between the craft industry, art pottery and interior

design, and for single clients rather than mainstream markets.”

Around ninety per cent of GAYA’s ceramic creations are

exported worldwide and capacity expands annually. “We’re

operating at full tilt, producing some of the most interesting,

unique and specified designs ever,” said the management.

GAYA still makes sculptures and unique pieces, but also

creates 4,000 to 5,000, hand-made pieces monthly. “Generally,

we work on projects and tailor-made ceramic collections based

on client’s needs,” says Massoni. “GAYA is one of the few places

in the world for specific custom-made orders, creating ceramics

ourselves ensures that each piece is a hand-made work of art.”

Home and hospitality accessories include table and coffee

sets, decorative and accent pieces, wall installations, lighting

and art works – or simply a custom-made tea-set designed and

created exclusively for your home. Fittingly based in Bali’s arts

and crafts hub of Ubud, GAYA also has an excellent educational

space, the GAYA Ceramic Arts Center (GCAC), visited by students

from across the world. Housed in a separate studio within Gaya’s

production house, GCAC hosts international workshops, courses

and artist residencies. In early 2012, GCAC will relocate across

the road, morphing into a stunning open-air studio constructed

from two carved, Javanese Joglo dwellings. Although it all sounds

of all ages’ to explore their creativity in ceramic hand painting and

crafting their own custom-made pot designs. Select a ceramic

item (plate, bowl, mug, etc), sketch your design, select the colours

and glazes then paint away. It then will be fired in on-site kilns and

ready for collection within four days!

Combined with a team of masterful potters and ceramic

artists, GAYA’s innovative GCAC hosts a varied programme

of international work shops, classes and artist residences for

enthusiasts to attend on a regular basis. These include Group

Workshops, Two-day immersion courses, Throwing Thursdays,

Drop-in Single Classes and Resident Artists – two-month growing

opportunities for mature ceramic artists. They also offer Free

Studio Time sessions, with materials and equipment open for

personal practice and fine-tuning new skills, with instructors on-

hand. More unusual sessions have included Culinary Clay or Yoga

and Clay retreats and workshops!

Kevala Ceramics now host classroom workshops offering

the opportunity to be an integral part of the ceramic process and

to design your own personalized pieces, overseen by the skilled

Kevala team – “Jump into the action and design your own

custom range!” ■

SPOTTING STAGES

It’s Friday night and it’s raining. The southern part of Bali is getting wet, and the road of Dyana

Pura (now Abimanyu) seems to be getting hot with more and more people coming to the

neighborhood. The road is slowly getting more packed with men crossing over, while cars

and motorbikes jam up as they queue up for parking. Why are people rushing to visit this road? What is so special about this street?

BALI&BEYOND DECEMBER 2011 27

Before the new

millennium began,

there wasn’t much

happening on Dyana

Pura. The only crowd

in the area was from

Gado Gado Restaurant bringing folks every

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday,

taking turns with the Double Six Club, the

most popular place to hang out at that

time. Night crawlers used to stop at Jaya

Pub, Café Luna or Goa Pub, located near

the cross roads of Jalan Nakula and Jalan

Seminyak, enjoying some drinks and live

music before heading to the all-night party

at Double Six. The area surrounding Dyana

Pura was still covered with lush rice paddy

fields, and it was definitely far quieter

compared to the situation today.

It wasn’t until 1999 that the area started

to become happening. The first door to

be opened was Santa Fe, and then some

other small clubs started appearing along

the road. Blue Angel was the first gay bar

to appear, a small bar on the second floor

of the building situated in front of where

JP’s Warung is located now. But most of

the clubs disappeared quickly, not long

after they started to operate. A part of the

now Fave Hotel Seminyak was the Q-Bar,

while Club Cosmo was Club Cabaret five

months ago and Kudos before. Private

Spa was Spy Bar before and Bali Joe and

Facebar before were Liquid Bar.

Dyana Pura wouldn’t be like what it is

now if Blue Angel didn’t bring its different

definition of entertainment. It was the

entertainment pioneer of the area. Back

At Bali Joe

then, when the rest of the clubs in Legian

still focused on performing live music

and R&B, the Blue Angel bar showcased

different kinds of shows: drag queen

performances, Go Go dances, and hip

techno music that soon attracted a

different crowd to the neighborhood. Other

clubs later copied it, except for the bars

and lounges located before the Buddha

Bar such as Bahiana and Santa Fe. We

called them “the spotlight shows.”

These shows usually start at 11 p.m.

The spotlights brighten up the stage with

many different colors and shapes, and

out of the dry ice smoke the drag queens

appear with spectacular costumes and

make up, acting like a famous diva on a

big stage. They dress up like rock stars,

Hawaiian dancers, Madonna or Mariah

Carey, or sometimes as kinky dancers

also have cabaret shows and a program

of classic disco and new wave retro hits

from the 70’s & 80’s. From the 8 clubs

currently open on the road Bali Joe,

Mixwell, and Club Cosmo are the most

famous, with many visitors flooding the

entrance all the way through the club, but

even so, each club has its own regular

The mutli-award winning

House of Jemme is popular

for a variety of very good

reasons; fine jewellery, cool

cocktails, casual but chic air-conditioned

lunches as well as romantic casual yet

fine dining in the evenings, before party

fun begins. The House is located on the

now extremely fashionable JalanPetitenget

where a multitude of cutting edge

boutiques, designer labels, beach clubs,

resorts, spas and salons have opened

up and made their mark in little less

than a year. However, forward thinking

Luke Stockley kicked off the trend by

opening Jemme over 4 years ago. It isn’t

for anything that Stockley has just been

awarded The Yak Magazine’s Yak Award

for ‘Best Jewellery Designer’ category. In

fact, JemmeJewellery can claim prize to

stunning designs in classic forms such

as solitary diamond engagement rings,

to funky contemporary ‘cocktail’ pieces;

bold yet chic. JemmeJewellery has a host

of collections to appeal to all age groups

and to all budgets. The sweet and darling

diamond bow ring is perfect for teenagers

and girly choices, whereas the large

moonstone and diamond earrings are a

bold statement on any outfit, or, the ruby

and diamond buckle bracelet is a chic

adornment to the sexy little black dress at

a glamourous evening gala.

JemmeJewellery uses a fine selection

of platinum, white gold, rose gold, yellow

gold and silver, as well as top grade

diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds

enhanced with a rainbow of semi precious

rings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches

to awe inspiring effect. The latest collection

of contemporary handmade moonstone-

entrances on all those who are adorned,

and is now complimented by the more

INVITE&INDULGE

In Indonesia, wine is not so

popular yet, probably because

the weather is too hot and the

price is too high with a ridiculous

amount of tax added, making

it hard to penetrate the local

market. Most Indonesians are not used to

consuming alcoholic drinks, and for some

of them who do, the citric and bitter flavor

of wine is hard to accept, so they prefer to

have sweet drinks like tropical cocktails.

But wine does have a place in the

hearts of few groups of people, the

non-Muslim societies and the western

communities in most big cities in

Indonesia. As a new market for the wine

industry, the demand for wine in this

country is increasing all the time. The

appearance of local brands helps to

introduce the art of drinking wine with its

affordable price to this new market,

before they are ready to go for the

imported choices.

Bali itself is the largest market for the

wine industry in Indonesia. In this holiday

destination, enjoying wine goes well with

the tropical leisure time. Imported types of

wine are supplied to shops all across the

island, as well as to trendy wine bars and

sommelier-staffed restaurants, which are

striving to provide a unique degustation

journey to its visitors.

THE GRAPE GLORY

On a cold wintery night, this red or yellowish green-transparent alcoholic drink is great to warm

up the night. But in this tropical climate a glass of wine has another purpose, to complete the

excitement of one’s leisure time.

year-end celebrations, here are our superb

choices to perfect your festivities.

ARTISAN ESTATEBringing the best of Australia, the Artisan

Estate wines are now Bali’s rising star

winery. The company was established in

2009 and it has successfully brought good

quality wine with local price. Artisan itself

means a craftsman, made from Australian

wine grape juice, shipped to Bali with its

temperature strictly controlled during the

shipment, then fermented and bottled in

Bali. This company also aims to be an

environmental-friendly organization by

using carbon-reduced bottles produced in

Australia that is also light in weight.

Most of Artisan Estate wines are rich

in flavor, light and easy to drink in the hot

climate, and the important thing is that

the wine can suit any different food,

including Asian food.

2011 Artisan Chardonnay is un-oaked

vibrant pale straw medium bodied wine

with the very light and elegant flavor of

white peach and dried apricots as well as

on the nose. It finishes refreshingly, perfect

for a sunset drink or paired with chicken,

seafood, pork, vegetable dishes, or food

with cream sauces and cheese platters.

While its signature 2010 Artisan Classic is

a craftsmanship of Chardonnay, Chenin

Blanc, Verdelho and Sauvignon Blanc

coming together with a very fruit driven

wine, a little bit sweet for start but finishes

dry, making it easy to go with any food

including the spicy Balinese food

or Western cuisine.

Recently the Artisan Estate has bottled

its first 2011 Artisan Shiraz which will

come in limited quantity for the rest of this

year. The red wine comes with a deep

ruby color and rich but smooth full fruit

flavors, and of course, goes very well

with a lot of different food. Soon the 2011

Artisan Sauvignon Blanc will surprise the

market to welcome the festive season.

www.artisanestate.com

According to Juan Jose Diaz*, Bali’s

most popular wine choice is the Sauvignon

Blanc. This white wine matches very well

with Bali’s hot climate with its light and

citric flavor without the wood aroma. It is

easy to drink and can be paired with any

kind of food, especially Asian food that is

rich in flavor and spices. While in Jakarta,

the most popular wine is the red, with its

heavy and deep flavor best to be enjoyed

in an indoor environment. The light red

Pinot Noir and Rosé can be other choices

to bring a little bit of strength to taste.

But whatever the choice is, Bali has it

all. The shops, bars and restaurants have

provided a wide selection of imported

wine, from the cheapest starting at around

Rp. 200,000 a bottle and on up. There

are still choices of the world’s best vino

from different countries such as France

and Italy, star-rising Chilean and Australian

wine, and not to forget the local’s pride

creation wine which could suit the mood of

drinking wine in a tropical island.

And just like in the four-season

countries where wine is consumed for the

ARMAND de BRIGNACIf you’re looking for the superb choice for

an absolute celebration, the best drink to

have is a glass of champagne. One of the

best we found is the Armand de Brignac,

which arrives in Bali in very limited quantity

to keep it exclusive. The Armand de

Brignac brings smooth, sumptuously acidy

elegant palate, which we find matches very

well with Bali’s breeze, lighting a rich and

joyful feeling, and is very refreshing for a

hot tropical climate.

Armand de Brignac Champagne has

been produced by the Cattier family in the

Champagne region of France since 1763.

It has superb quality of elegant artistry and

bold innovation, made from the best variety

of grapes in the region; Chardonnay, Pinot

Noir, and Pinot Meunier, that is pressed

with slow and high quality yield from hand-

sorted grapes. The process still uses a

traditional method using a blend of three

distinct vintages from outstanding harvests

years making it truly an artisan creation.

Three selections are available, Brut

Gold, Rosé, and Blanc de Blanc. The Brut

Gold is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir,

and Pinot Meunier coming in a complex,

full-bodied bouquet, with light floral notes

and sumptuous, racy fruity palate, while

The Blanc de Blancs is made from dry and

crisp young Chardonnay grapes, delivers

a fruity and floral aroma with delicate and

pure structure. The Rosé presents rich

pure fruits in the beginning and ends with

delicate smoky grilled notes and fresh

strawberry as well as blackcurrant aromas.

This salmon-hued bubbling drink is best

served as an aperitif or served with fish,

poultry, or blue cheese and fruity deserts.■ PH

PONDERINGPOINT

The wafting aroma

of clove cigarettes.

Coconut palms.

Colorful Hindu

ceremonies played-out

on the street. Bemos

zipping around Denpasar, crammed

to capacity with smiley locals. And my

first Bali beachside resort (in Sanur),

quintessional Balinese style with thatched

alang alang roof and beautifully manicured

gardens dotted with exotic blooms.

These were my first impressions of

Bali when I arrived twenty years ago.

A nineteen-hour flight was a long way to

come from my native England, but Bali,

regarded by Brits as paradise, was just

how I imagined it would be and well

worth the journey.

Fast-forward twenty years, and still

when visiting this mesmerizing Island of the

Gods I’ve found some things remain the

same, but others have definitely changed

– sometimes for the worse. Back then,

even fifteen years ago, Seminyak was

predominately a sea of rice fields. It wasn’t

even on my tourist map, but today you’d

be lucky to find a spare square inch. (If I

had wisely invested in a plot of land then,

I’d be one very wealthy lady now!). Kuta

was still quite kitschy and fun, and Ubud

mainly a backpackers haven. There were

certainly no chi-chi designer boutiques,

Californian-style yoga retreats and definitely

no Starbucks, as Ubud has now. The

road leading to Ubud was once a series of

individual craft villages; sadly today it’s one

long indistinguishable urban sprawl.

Bali’s accommodation options

basically used to be a choice of five-star

international luxury brands or surfer-style

budget options, concentrated in Kuta-

Legian. Now Bali is synonymous with luxe

villa complexes, chic boutique resorts and

fabulous six-star retreats, with butlers and

plunge pools the norm and alang-alang

roofs and carved woods making way to

polished concrete and glass. Even Kuta is

slowly going up-market and those cheapie

losmen-style pads are a disappearing

breed – along with clove cigarettes

and bemos! In many areas, bemos are

almost defunct, as locals now own their

own motorbikes (and astonishingly,

Blackberry’s). But bemos could well

return to help solve Bali’s escalating traffic

problem, arguably created by all those

new motorbikes and ridiculously over-

sized passenger carriers. Rice fields were

always Bali’s best scene-scape and big

drawing card, but the rampant tourism

development that has devoured large

chunks of agricultural land is in danger of

making paddy fields in some areas almost

a Disney-like novelty. Ubud’s charming

central rice fields are all but gone; visitors

now have to stay further and further out of

town to get their “rice-field fix.”

Beautiful Bali has become a victim of

its own success, or maybe it’s only me

who just wants a slice of paradise. But off

the main streets and far from the built-

up, congested tourist areas, Balinese

life does carry on as always – ancient

Hindu traditions and ceremonies, simple

family life, timeless agricultural and fishing

communities. Towering volcanoes,

mystical temples, jungly rainforests and

deserted black beaches are all still there.

When in search of the authentic Bali of

yesteryear, now you just have to look

a little bit harder and travel further afield. ■

The restaurant’s name attests to its mixed history,

Chez Gado Gado referring to a local blend of

vegetables and sambal kacang—spicy peanut sauce-

-that is the kind of thing you won’t find at Chez

Gado Gado. The Executive Chef, Quirijn Rademaker from Holland,

assures the local fair is readily available on many street corners

outside of his turf. According to Quib (his kitchen moniker), it’s

just too hard to do local dishes justice. On the outside, he enjoys

ayam betutu and rendang; dishes that are tough to westernize

without the outcome seeming watered down, he adds.

If a select few items on the menu have remained since Gado

Gado opened, they are probably only cocktails, as the charming

large building on the beach was once a renowned Seminyak

nightclub. Gado Gado the club had a good run before being

adopted and refashioned as a French Bistro. Located at the tail

end of Camplung Tanduk Street, just out of reach of the ever-

rolling surf of Seminyak beach, it was prime property in the vortex

of Bali; a location that invited continual refinement.

Under new management, the menu then broadened, setting

sail around the Mediterranean. Only a further few select items,

French fair from its Bistro days, remained in demand, and in print.

The expansive patio, with holy Hindu camplung trees twisting and

accommodated around large tables of families dining, was recently

raised above eye-level of bustling beach traffic. This change results in

a view of Seminyak beach that makes Cristian Poddine, Chez Gado

Gado’s new General Manager, pause on his way to the kitchen.

‘Why would anyone want to work anywhere else?’ he remarks.

Having arrived from Australia but a month ago, Cristian and I

sat a while as he detailed where refinements will lead fans’ taste

buds, from here. The young Italian details his first excursion

out of the city to Chez Gado Gado’s three thousand square-

foot greenhouse. He exclaims that they’ve even got their own

pomegranates, though the building is about as new as he is, full of

unripe potential and hung with pampered zucchinis.

Unlike Quib and Felipe Videla, his Chilean Sommelier counterpart,

I find it difficult to imagine flavors as one visualizes designs, leaving

me unaware as to just how an enormous greenhouse could improve

on Chez Gado Gado’s perfect salads. Lettuce and shredded beets

comprising walnuts and soft flakes of caramel make their beet salad,

just as Quib said it, a memorably ‘playful starter’.

Tweaking in the kitchen is also, as the Chef said it,

‘unstoppable’, and so there came to be a tasting menu, a sampler

of favored fair. Torn between this and the restaurant’s most

requested dish, the sea bass, I chose to experience one thing in its

entirety. Rich within a well-defined limit, the thick and flaking cutlet

rested on black olives, almonds and green peppers, sweeping the

fish down an undercurrent of subtle texture and deep flavors.

Alone with its inherited name, the many platforms of Chez

Gado Gado are also distinctly Indonesian, in design. The

restaurant is a restructured homage to the traditional Balinese

wantilan design, showing once again the Balinese do remarkably

well with fine, dark wood, and some solid marble to boot. Chez

Gado Gado is one strong team’s idea of a good mix that boldly

compliments one remarkable island.

ACTION&ATTRACTION

Wet Season WavesWet Season Waves

A rare sight – an empty Keramas Beach lineup

Page 53: Bali & Beyond Magazine December 2011

BALI&BEYOND DECEMBER 2011 53

Many of tourists avoid coming during the months of November

through March, but many surfers will tell you that the

wet season is actually their preferred time of the year on the Island of the Gods.

After the mild sunny days

and strong easterly

tradewinds of the dry

season have exhausted

their allotted energy and

retreated into hibernation

for the year, the winds from the north begin

to make their annual appearance and bring

with them the rain bearing clouds, heat, and

overpowering humidity that is Bali’s wet season.

And while the average tourist may shun Bali

during the months of November through March to

avoid the almost daily rain showers, many surfers will

tell you that the wet season is actually their preferred

time of the year on the Island of the Gods.

For they know that there are waves-a-plenty on both

sides of the island, with just a fraction of the crowds that can

pack the most popular surf spots during the busy dry season.

Only Uluwatu, Padang-Padang, and a few other spots on the Bukit

Peninsula don’t often provide the same quality and size during the wet

season, but otherwise most of the same east and west coast dry season

favorites are still going off, rain or shine.

The East Coast WavesDue to the predominant northwest winds during the wet season, the east

coast provides most consistent surfing conditions from dawn to dusk, rain

or shine. The biggest waves will always be found at the southern end of

the island at Nusa Dua, where you can either paddle out or catch a boat

to the lineup starting from Geger Beach, then challenge yourself against

the current and the heavy wave energy that makes catching a few of those

Nusa Dua righthanders a just reward for all the effort.

Probably the most popular wet season wave on the east coast is

Serangan, also known as Turtle Island. A reef break that has multiple take

off spots with lefts and rights, it has a nice inner lagoon for the non-surfers

Taking fl ight into the onshore winds at Canggu

Sunrise session at Sanur Reef

Page 54: Bali & Beyond Magazine December 2011

BALI&BEYOND DECEMBER 201154

to splash around in as well as lots of warungs to hang in, making it

ideal for those all-day surf sessions.

Further north along the Sanur beach strip there are many reef

breaks, most that require a long paddle or a boat ride to access,

so often there are not many surfers out. From Hyatt Reef at the

south end to Sanur Reef in the north, there are plenty of waves

to be had depending upon the size and strength of the swell, and

they can be surfed most any time of the day.

Up past Sanur along the coastal road is Keramas, arguably

the most well known east coast location where nowadays there is

almost no chance that you’ll ever be surfing it alone, unlike some

of the other wet season spots. Known for its consistency and

wave quality, most every surfer that arrives in Bali will at some

point end up at Keramas to give it a go.

The West Coast WavesSince the wind blows onshore on the West Coast most of the

rainy season, early morning sessions are mandatory if you plan on

surfing in the best conditions. If you’re lucky the winds won’t kick

in until mid morning, so at most of the west side breaks you can

expect glassy conditions and fun waves in the early morning.

The beach strip that starts in Kuta and ends up at Brawa

Beach will have lots of options for a dawn patrol, but as with most

beaches breaks it depends on the tides as to the quality of the

waves. As the general rule a medium to high incoming tide seems

to work best for most of the beach breaks, but a few do perform

nicely at low tide as well.

Farther up the coast you’ll find the reef breaks around Canggu

to offer up some fun waves if the winds are mild. If your timing is

good there will be a nice glass off after a heavy rain and not much

of a crowd, but if you surf near a river mouth make sure to keep

a stick of wax in your boardies because the freshwater running

down into the break often makes for a slippery deck.

If you’re into a road trip and want to stay a few days outside

the Kuta area, head north to Balian or Medewi, which are great

wet season spots to just relax, surf, and enjoy a more natural

Bali experience. Although getting more crowded now,

it is worth a visit.

So as you can see, other than a change in the wind direction

and a few raindrops for us surfers the wet season in Bali is really

not that much different from the dry season. There are plenty of

waves, a few sunny and hot days and plenty of ice cold Bintangs

to wash down those steaming plates of Nasi Goreng, all of which

make for a perfect Bali surfing holiday. ■

THE ROYALTY OF THE REPUBLIC

Yogyakarta is indeed

special. It proudly

preserves its

traditional values

while at the same

time welcomes the

changes brought by modernization.

The result is a whole new culture that is

uniquely formed in Yogyakarta.

This special city of Yogyakarta used

to be the capital of the ancient Mataram

Empire as well as the capital of Indonesia

during the Indonesian National Revolution

from 1946-1950. Today, the city is known

as Java’s cultural hub, where traditional

arts coexist in harmony with the more

contemporary ones. It is the only province

in Indonesia that is still governed by a

pre-colonial monarchy, the Sultan of

Yogyakarta, who serves as the hereditary

governor. The palace of Yogyakarta,

known as the Keraton, is the last palace

in the Republic of Indonesia that remains

active politically and socially. Members of

the royal family still reside in the palace

and are actively involved in running the

province.

This Sultanate was established in

1755 by the Dutch East India Company

(VOC) through the Treaty of Giyanti. The

Today, the city is known as Java’s cultural hub, where traditional arts coexist in harmony with the more contemporary ones.

Sultanate of Mataram was divided into the

Sultanate of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat

with Yoygyakarta as the capital and the

Sultanate of Surakarta Hadiningrat with

Solo as the capital.

Sultan Hamengkubuwono I built the

new capital of Yogyakarta with the Keraton

at the center of the city, Mount Merapi to

the north and Pangandaran beach at the

south to reflect Yogyakarta’s harmony

with nature.

After Indonesia gained its independence

in September of 1945, the Sultanate of

Yogyakarta declared that Yogyakarta was

now part of the Republic of Indonesia.

When Jakarta was once again occupied

by the Dutch, the capital of the republic

was moved to Yogyakarta until 1950.

In return for this support, the Indonesian

government granted special authority over

Yogyakarta and it became a special region

within the province of Central Java.

The Keraton (the palace) plays

a central role in the Sultanate of

Yogyakarta as it was built in accordance

with the Javanese beliefs in mysticism,

spirituality and symbolism. It is encircled by

a row of mountains known as the Horizon,

as the border of the universe.

The Keraton area stretches 5 kilometers

south; symbolizing the birth of a human

and its descent from the high place to

a perishable world, while in the opposite

direction symbolizes the return of a

human to God. To the north, it stretches

2 kilometers to symbolize the road of life

that is full of temptations. The straight

road that connects the Keraton to the

Tugu monument symbolizes the close

relationship between humans and

God the creator.

The name Keraton originated from the

word keratuan, which means the place

where the king and queen live. Ratu in the

ancient Indonesian language means a king,

while in the modern Bahasa Indonesia

means a queen. The Keraton was

designed with underground tunnels for

the royal families and large open spaces

for ceremonies. The pillars are wrapped

in golden lotus and leaf ornaments, the

symbol of goodness according to Buddhist

and Hindu beliefs. Calligraphy art pieces

that spell out the words “Allah” and

“Muhammad” can also be found

in the Keraton.

The royal families are served by abdi

dalem, people who extend their services

to the Keraton voluntarily. The abdi dalem

take care of the daily necessities of

the Sultan and his extended family as

well as run the palace. They are also

responsible for performing Javanese

traditional ceremonies.

Abdi dalem are not the palace’s

employees, but rather are an integral part

of the Keraton entrusted with the values

of Yogyakarta in the modern day, the real

guardians of the Javanese culture and

traditions. Those who sign up for this are

considered very respectable. Today there

are more than two thousand abdi dalem

at the Keraton, giving their utmost

dedication and loyalty to the Sultan and

the Royal family.

Recently the Sultanate of Yogyakarta

held a grant event. It was the wedding

of the Sultan’s youngest daughter Gusti

Raden Ajeng Nur Astuti Wijareni to civil

servant Achmad Ubaidillah from

Lampung, Sumatra. Prior to the wedding,

they were given the royal titles Gusti

Kanjeng Ratu Bendara and Gusti Pangeran

Haryo Yudanegara.

The entire celebration lasted four days

from October 16-19 2011, with the actual

wedding ceremony falling on Tuesday,

October 18th. The date was carefully

determined based on a Javanese system

calculating the dates of birth of the bride

and groom resulting a good date which

is hoped could bring happiness and

prosperity to the couple.

The festivities were rich in Javanese

culture that began with a plangkahan

ritual held at the Sultan’s residence on

Sunday. The ritual was needed as the

bride was marrying before her older sister.

In plangkahan, the bride is required to

present gifts to her unmarried older sister

and to seek permission.

Another ritual that took place on that

day was pasang tarub, or a procession to

decorate the house of the bride’s family.

The Keraton (the palace) plays a central role in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta as it was built in accordance with the Javanese beliefs in mysticism, spirituality and symbolism. It is encircled by a row of mountains known as the Horizon, as the border of the universe.

Farmers groups from Bantul presented

their harvests for this ritual. They brought

The siraman ritual, the ceremony of

ritual was done in separate locations but

started at the same time at noon. The ritual

is meant to purify the bride and groom

both physically and mentally while at the

The wedding itself took place on the

third day. After exchanging wedding vows,

the couple performed the panggih ritual,

The groom then carried the bride as

a symbol of patience and responsibility.

After the ceremony the newlyweds

The end of the year is

definitely the most

awaited time for

all shopaholics in

the world. The jaw-

dropping discounts

are offered in almost every big mall and

department store especially in a big city

like Jakarta. This could only mean one

thing: a true haven for bargain hunters!

Welcoming the end of the year, there

are many events and festivities held in

celebration. This is the time when most

shopping malls and department stores

put up the big signs that make everyone’s

eyes widen who are passing by. Who

would not be attracted to a 90% discount

when written on the boards of almost every

season. These sale programs can be

offered many times in a year, especially

when there is a special occasion such

as the city anniversary. But of course the

craziest discount season that will make

women scream and run to the shops with

large sale board signs are usually held at

the end of the year, especially if the shop

sells branded items.

If you think you don’t really need

to wear the latest style of fashion, the

‘clearance’ products have everything you

really need. The key is to make sure the

product meets your needs by checking out

At this time of the year the big malls

and shopping centers are all competing

to spoil the shopping lovers with the

cheapest prices of the year. So Jakarta’s

shopping season can be very-very

tempting. Not only local brands but also

the internationally famous brands all

participate in this year-end sale. This is a

part of their marketing strategy to clear out

all the overstock taking up too much space

in their storage.

So, are you an interested bargain hunter in Jakarta? Here are some tips from us:

1. Make a list of things you really need.

Avoid buying things you don’t really need

which just will end up forever in your

drawer.

2. Know your limit. Know how much cash

you’re able to spend. Never, ever, exceed

that limit.

3. Be a visionary. Is it worth it to buy

clothing that is too large for you and then

spend extra cash for a tailor?

4. You need a lot of patience. Browse the

shops first before you decide to buy so

you can compare prices and not end up

buying things you will regret. Ask the sales

person to check the stock they have to

find your perfect size.

5. Shop on the weekdays instead of the

weekend, so you won’t get trapped with

the crazy crowds. The sales person will

even have more time to help you.

6. Compare prices in every store so you

can get the best deal. Check out the

normal price on websites so you don’t end

up buying “discounted” items where the

price has actually has been raised before.

7. Always prioritize quality. It’s better

to buy more expensive stuff but with

good quality than discounted items that

won’t last long, especially for electronic

equipment.

8. You’ll be drawn with the sale,

don’t forget to eat first and get your

stamina ready.

9. Check for the warranty.

10. Check the price tag and ask the sales

person if it’s the price after discount or

before.

11. Try on the clothes before you buy

them to make sure the clothes suit you.

Last but not least, have fun! So, let’s go

shopping!

BALI QUAD DISCOVERY TOURS - The Bali Quad and Bali Buggy tours

both bring you to a part of Bali where you still can find old traditions alive.

Drive yourself with a specially designed off-road vehicle that copes with all

kinds of terrain, through an authentic part of the island, passing rice fields,

crossing jungles and driving through a traditional Balinese village. The views

during these tours are sometimes beyond description. BaliQuad (using ATV’s

/ quad bikes) and BaliBuggy (using off-road cars) are located in different

locations which offer different tracks. A special “2-in-1 adventure” can be

HEALTH&MEDICAL

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics.

Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fl uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods.

Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately.

Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.

AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
