PastGothaBombingsInordertoimproveonthesuccessoftheZeppelins,theGermansstartedusingtheGothabomber,ahugebiplane,tolaunchbombingraidsonBritainin1917.BritainrespondedwiththedevelopmentofwirelesscommunicaNonfortheirpilotsandtheimprovementofaerialcombatmaneuvers.Overthecourseofayearover60GothabombersweredestroyedbyBriNshfighters.

DevelopmentofRadarIn1935waragainstGermanywasloominginthefuture.GiventheirexperienceofbeingbombedviaZeppelinandGothabombersinWWI,BritaindecidedtofundradarresearchandbuildaradarsystemmonitoringBritain’sborders.A[erthreeyearsSirRobertWatson-Wa#hadcreateda30MHzsystemofradarthatwasoperaNonalthroughoutthewar.Over20radarstaNonswerebuiltandinstallednearthecoaststodetectGermanbombers.
DowdingSystemHavingradarwasn’tenough.TheBriNshcreatedtheworld’sfirstwide-areaground-controlledintercepNonnetworkundertheguidanceofAirChiefMarshalHughDowding.UndertheDowdingSystemBritainwasdividedintogroupsandsubgroupscalledsectors.EachsectorhadamainairfieldwithanoperaNonsroom.IftheradarsystemdetectedanyincomingraidstheObserverCorpsmonitoredtheirdirecNonandsenttheinformaNontothemainairfieldsforthesecNonstheLu[waffewasin.Theairfieldsthenscrambledthefighterstointerceptthebombers.TheDowdingsystemdramaNcallydecreasedtheresponseNmeandincreasedtheaccuracyofintercepNngthebombers.
