T here are many things to be worried about as you wake up each morning and listen to the news.

But we all need to stop worrying about the realities of the moment, and begin the process of bringing light and love into everyday life.

But how do we do this? There are many ways. First, you have to start where you are standing. As Thaddeus Golas says in his classic 1970s spiritual book, “The Lazy Man’s Guide to Enlightenment,” there is nothing wrong with where you are. It’s one of the infinite choices available to you.

This issue of Balanced Living is devoted to starting you on the path toward light and positive energy. You will find several articles here devoted to helping you on your journey.

As for my part, what can I do? I ask that question of myself each day.

Keeping Balanced Living circulating around Northeast Ohio is job num-ber one. The publishing business is not an easy one these days. All over the country, newspapers are going out of business, magazines are clos-ing, and the ones that keep putting one foot in front of the other are getting thinner.

I am committed to keeping Bal-anced Living in print. However I see

other opportunities to expand the brand, and in the coming months you will see Balanced Living evolve as a local “bringer of the light.”

In this age of instant informa-tion, websites are a critical source of information. We rely on our site at www.balancedlivingmag.com, our digital edition and our new Facebook page to extend our reach, but we are going to take it one step further.

I am pleased to announced the launch of the Balanced Living Online Expo and Blog, at www.balancedlivingexpo.com. It’s just get-ting started, but you will eventually find a wealth of resources there to make holistic health and sustainable living a larger part of your life.

We’re all in this together. Let’s all look for the light.

Look for the LightWe all need to stop worrying about the realities of the moment, and begin the process of bringing light and love into everyday life.

How many things do you do in life where the outcome does not matter? Cook-ing, cleaning, your job,

exercising, even vacationing, all have outcomes to be judged. Such self-judg-ments, moment-by-moment through-out the day, day after day, can be the cause of stress, anxiety, lower immune function, and a sense of dissatisfaction with life. All these are the opposite of, “creating light and positive energy.”

The first step to creating light and positive energy is for you to give your-self permission to “let go.” Here is an easy exercise to help move you away from the normal state of needing to control the outcome of everything.

At your desk, when multi-tasking and the problems you have to solve are overwhelming your ability to think, take your pen in the writing po-

sition, and place it on a blank piece of paper situated way off to the right (if you are right-handed). Turn your gaze to the left, away from the pen and pa-per. Look at the objects on the left side of your desk as if you were an alien life form seeing them for the first time. Slowly explore the edges and shapes with your eyes, mimicking with your pen on paper, the movement your eyes are experiencing in their visual explo-ration of the objects. When your eyes jump to a new object or detail, jump

your pen, all without looking at the paper. Continue until all parts of all objects have been meditated upon in this way, one or more times. The only rule is don’t look at the paper until you have wandered through all the shapes, seeing and recording eye movement as a human seismograph.

This hand-eye-meditation exercise is one of the many that are available to practice letting-go-of-task-outcome. It is based on the book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain,” by Betty Smith, and similar to those in “Zen Seeing, Zen Drawing,” by Frederick Franck. In doing this meditative practice, the brain opens to creativity. There is a clearing out of stress and stuck ways of thinking, making space for the consideration of new paths for solving the problem at hand.

In addition to creative thinking,

the exercises can be used for stress relief, pain relief, rehabilitation, choosing to change your mood, to be calm while sitting at a stop light ( just use your eyes – no pen and paper are needed), brain exercise, and as a game to play with children.

Doing meditative exercises every day will greatly increase those “aha! moments” of enlightened insight. Enlightened insight is a burst of “light and positive energy.”

Are you still a skeptic? Is it real or la-la land? Try the exercise and decide for yourself. Share your experiences with the author, whatever they are, at [email protected].

Dr. Barbara Bakus achieves certification

After two years of intensive training in areas including botanical medicine, mind-body interactions and nutrition, Dr. Barbara L. Bakus has completed her Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at

the University of Arizona. Launched in the summer of 2000 by interna-tionally-recognized integrative medicine pioneer Andrew Weil, MD, the Center in Integrative Medicine Fellowship combines residential sessions in Tucson with a “distributed learning” model in which participants learn via the Internet, in the comfort of their own home or office. Bakus, a board certified family physician in Chagrin Falls, joined 74 other physi-cians and nurse-practitioners from all over the world in a graduation ceremony on December 12, 2008, in Tucson.

“Dr. Bakus has received the best training available in integrative medicine,” stated Dr. Andrew Weil. “I consider her fully prepared to go out in the world and help transform the practice of medicine and healthcare in the directions consumers want,” he concluded.

The program, which includes 1,000 hours of instruction, emphasizes clinical applications and collaboration to establish a broad knowledge base that will transfer into clinical practice. The curriculum utilizes patient simulations, collaborative dialogues, research updates and dialogues, problem-solving exercises, selected readings, group proj-ects, and presentations. The focus is on the practical application of approaches that have scientific evidence and/or a history of traditional use. Methods of healing are explored, and physicians gain the ability to discuss these areas with both their patients and the practitioners of these disciplines. Fellows explore the Art of Medicine, Philosophy of Medicine, Medicine and Culture, Mind-Body Interactions, Nutrition, Botanicals, Physical Activity, Spirituality, Leadership, and Legal Issues.

BUSINESS PROFILE

“Toxic pollution” is everywhere. Toxins are in the air we breathe, our water supply, medications, pro-cessed foods, caffeine and stimu-lants. Optimum health starts with elimination of the body’s toxins.

Total Body Image is a revolu-tionary holistic health and well-ness center owned by Practitioner Renee M. Bolz. She is a certified Colon Hydrotherapist (I-ACT mem-ber), Ohio State Board-Licensed Esthetician, Certified Endermolo-gist, Certified Personal Trainer, and Relaxation Massage Therapist.

Total Body Image offers you the road to health and wellness. Health packages include: Colon Hydrotherapy, Endermologie (cel-lulite treatment), facials, infrared sauna, and airbrush tanning.

Total Body ImageTotal Body Image specializes in

Colon Hydrotherapy. It is a self-in-sert system done in your own privacy. It works on the principal that dis-ease starts in the colon. Most foods (boxed, processed and junk), Rx meds, and other chemicals that do not leave the body are stored in the colon.

At first there are few symptoms, but after several years of putrefac-tion, sub clinical signs graduate to disease status. This is because several pounds of fecal material laden with millions of bacteria can attach itself to the colon walls. Toxic waste can generate all types of “BAD” bacteria, creating a tougher war zone for good bacteria to win.

Colon Hydrotherapy is very easy and extremely effective. Colonics will also exercise the colon by reengaging

nerves that may have gone lazy or forgotten how to work properly, weakened by poor bowel habits and burdensome foods.

Endermologie is an FDA-ap-proved treatment to eliminate toxins; firm, tone and tighten the elasticity of your skin; and reduce the appearance of cellulite.

When you combine Endermolo-gie with Colon Hydrotherapy, you have the best detoxification pro-gram to maximize weight loss.

Don’t forget ladies, get your belly flat for summer, increase your energy, get rid of that cellulite, and begin the transformation of being healthier and feeling comfortable in your body inside and out!

Add positive energy and re-move all toxins to get to the root of the problem. Call to learn more about how to have a “healthy gut” and how to avoid being sick.

Enhancing Life with Gratitude & ForgivenessGratitude and forgiveness are practices that

enhance life and allow us to give and receive joy. Both also help us to appreciate the pres-

ent and live in the moment. Throughout 2009, staff from The Gathering Place, a Northeast Ohio cancer support center, will share tips on how to implement and embrace both in your daily life.

Self-gratitude and forgivenessForgiveness of self is often a difficult task. We have taught ourselves to often be our toughest critics. How-ever, self-forgiveness gives personal power and creates positive energy, which leads to a life of contentment and serenity. By practicing forgiveness you:● Release and let go.● Feel relief and hopefulness.● Create peace and freedom in your heart and mind.● Gain control by surrender.

To begin the process of self forgiving, take a piece of paper and title it “Forgiving Me.” Then fill in the blanks to the following:● Forgiving myself means_______________● If I forgive myself I would___________● Forgiving myself means giving up__________

One way to work on the lifelong process of

forgiveness is by practicing gratitude. Choosing to be grateful can bring your attention and awareness to simple pleasures. Gratitude creates: ● Joy. ● Promotes health.● Lessens worry. ● Draws people to us. ● Opens our hearts and connects us to the universe.

Opportunities to practice gratitude include:● Saying thank you to someone today.● Focusing on something beautiful and sharing it.● Listing two things that enhance your life.

Self-forgiveness and gratitude are an important part of a balanced, healthy life. Perhaps John F. Kennedy said it best — “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Mary Fisher Bornstein, LISW, and Betsy Kohn, MA, PC, are staff at The Gathering Place, a Northeast Ohio cancer support center. They have developed gratitude and forgiveness workshops to help individuals and families find additional ways of coping on the cancer journey. To reach Mary or Betsy, call The Gathering Place at 216-595-9546 or email them at [email protected] and [email protected].

Prior to the ball dropping on Time’s Square, and a new year starting, you vowed that this would be the year you

ate right, worked out, and finally met your fitness goals. However, if you are like countless of well-intentioned souls, by March your efforts were not enough to make any real changes.

Before you throw your scale out the window and head for the nearby fast food drive-in, consider a holistic approach to weight loss and weight management which includes eating consciously, a personalized fitness rou-tine, and life-long habits that provide results that are sustainable. Why feed your body junk, when it deserves clean and efficient energy sources, like the ones that help keep our planet in bal-ance? We are all concerned about what is going on in the world, but at times we forget to take care of our own house.

Fitness expert Jim Wallack, former Army Ranger, and owner of Complete Concepts, ClevelandsCompleteCon-cepts.com, offers real solutions to what some consider an overwhelming feat.

Let’s face it, we live in a very fast-paced culture and we want things easy, quick and efficient. This is completely understandable when we are attempt-ing to balance our daily lives, filled with parental responsibilities, work, repairs, and relationships -- demanding us to perform a balancing act fit for a circus performer. It is no wonder why our fad exercise diets and programs are usually temporary solutions versus changes in our lifestyles. Below you will find some basic guidelines to follow in order to sustain your success beyond “summertime” goals.

Holistic approachLooking for a workout that is physi-cally challenging is not enough. In order to capitalize on all your hard work, you must start in the right direction. The “holistic fitness” approach involves proper time management, goal-

orientated training, a variety of training, and proper recovery time. Not only do you have to sweat, but you must get educated on how to sweat right!

Time managementFor most people is the hardest chal-lenge to conquer starts with the word “when?” Finding the time in an already jam-packed day, week, and month can seem almost impossible. You don’t have to work out every day, and weekly workout plans can be individually tailored by properly analyzing your time and laying out a workable schedule. Ba-sically, sit down and map it out! Remem-ber, your workouts do not always have to be in the gym. Wake up 30 minutes earlier and start swinging some kettle bells or start with lunges right in your own living room. A solid time-manage-ment plan will get you to the work out and away from the excuses.

A key ingredient that takes your fitness goals beyond “bikini” season is incorporating goals beyond the norm. The desire to lose unneeded weight is a good goal, but do not stop there. Putting that pin on the calendar is extremely important so everyone can see your goals. Now you have let your goals be known! You may want to loose 10 lbs. in two months, but how about trying something you have never done before. For example, enter-ing a walk or race for a specific charity event. This is a win-win situation, not only are you doing something good for yourself, but the community as well. The pride that comes with being part of something larger than yourself can be extremely rewarding.

Mixed fitness approachThe mixed fitness approach of training by itself should be considered “holis-tic” or comparable to “environmental mastery”. The term “environmental mastery” can be considered training that attempts to replicate your daily activities in your environment, whether that is lifting your luggage at the airport or training for a marathon. Therefore

Your body is like the planet

Protecting Health, Home & Planet

Everyday Environmentalist

we must use equipment that resembles the objects we deal with daily.

Integrating functional strength, core/stability, aerobic, anaerobic, and iso-centric conditioning keeps your workouts fun and exciting. Find time to workout outside vs. a four-walled room. There is much to be said about finishing a run as the sun goes down or up versus on a treadmill! The combined/mixed fitness concept helps facilitate your individual fitness goals in a healthy, sustainable manner.

Recovery planHow are you taking care of yourself following your workouts? What type of food are you putting in your body? How much sleep are you getting? How much water are you drinking? If we were talking percentages, and working out was 40% of positive energy spent, your recovery activity would be approximately 60%.

Let’s take a look at our planet. What a rich, life-producing world we live in. What happens when we put toxins in our streams, tear down our rain forests, or pollute the air with factory stacks?

Our planet becomes less efficient, and we begin to see negative domino effects like global warming, unbal-anced ecosystems, and the list goes on and on. Well let’s scale it back some to our individual body. The human body when examined is an incredible

piece of work. Continuously looking at a variety of aspects of fitness versus just one will allow you to maximize your time, your health, and your results.

Proactive & Personal Transformation

Yoga Matters

During the practice of Savasana (Corpse Pose) we can also study the gunas, as they are qualities not just of perceptible nature but also of the mind. During deep relaxation, the mind will tend either to become tama-sic – sleepy and dense, or rajasic – dis-tracted and unfocused. Observation of the breath brings attention back to the present and helps to create a more sattvic state. You can also modify the breath to cultivate sattva. If the mind is heavy and dull, gently lengthen the inhalation to bring a more attentive state. If the thoughts are scattered and wandering, subtly elongate the exhala-tion to settle the mind towards silence. By practicing in this way, relaxation postures become deeply refreshing to all layers of your being.

Understanding the gunas can help us to avoid the extremes of lethargy on one hand and hyperactivity on the other. The next time you feel out of sorts, ask yourself if you feel more dull – tamasic, or more agitated - rajasic. Then choose a yoga practice or other activity that will lead you closer to a sattvic state – balanced, calm and content.

BL

By Karen Alligire, MFA, RYT

In yoga philosophy, all phenom-enon are said to be comprised of three complementary qualities or tendencies known as gunas. Tamas

is the stabilizing quality of solidity and containment. Rajas is the dynamic quality of movement and energy. Sattva is the quality of harmony and luminosity. It represents the balance between the vibrancy of rajas and the inertia of tamas. Tamas is like the quiet before a storm, when the air is still and a thick layer of clouds covers the sun. Rajas is like the storm, with the dynamic wind, rain, thunder and lightening all in motion. The clear sky and radiant sun after the storm is like sattva - clear, refreshing and harmoni-ous. The gunas are not positive or

negative on their own, but exist in a continually changing interplay. In each moment, we can make choices to balance the gunas to enhance our health and well being.

Tamas can be limiting or stagnating, as it is the force of dullness and inertia that keeps us stuck in old patterns. Yet it is also the moderating or conserva-tive force that keeps the energy of rajas from getting out of control. Lying on the couch clicking channels is tamasic in the dulling, stagnating sense. Standing your ground on an important decision is tamasic in the sense of strength and solidity. Solidity and firmness is a desirable attribute, but taken too far, it becomes stubbornness or sluggish-ness. The energy of rajas can also be helpful or harmful, depending on the context of the situation. An action

adventure movie is rajasic and so is a vigorous bike ride. Movement and dynamism can help us get out of a rut, or it can keep us busy, distracted and agitated. Yoga helps us to discern what is needed in the moment.

The sattvic quality of calm balance is seen as a stepping stone toward ultimate freedom from the influence of these changing forces. Sattvic activities, foods and environments are those that make us clear, attentive and tranquil. Some examples of sattvic practices are medita-tion, prayer, chanting, spiritual reading and quiet time in nature. It takes aware-ness and discrimination to know if something is sattvic in nature. Yoga helps us to become alert and discerning, mak-ing choices that support and nurture this harmonious state of being.

The model of the three gunas can be a helpful way to look at our lives and our yoga practices. When you step onto the mat, observe how you are feeling. Do you need the steady and grounding quality of standing poses or the energetic boost of backbends? If you are fatigued or emotionally drained, forward bends and reclining poses can bring a more sattvic state, balanced and calm. When you look at your practice as a whole, notice if it needs more stillness or more move-ment. Often, this question will lead us to poses that we might usually avoid, to slow down if we are moving too fast, or to get moving if we are stuck.

The three qualities of nature

a goal for me for a long time. I’m not yet close to doing itenough. It’s no easy task, to be sure. In “Here and Now”author Henri Nouwen points out that if we are to live in thepresent, we must harbor a deep belief that the here and noware of utmost importance. The reward is great, Nouwensays.

“If we could just be, for a few minutes each day, fullywhere we are, we would indeed discover that we are notalone and that the One who is with us wants only one thing:to give us love.”

I look forward to the day when I can declare on a regularbasis, without sarcasm and with no pun intended, “I’ve lostmy mind.” That will, indeed, be a “present.”

Recovering from Hopelessness

Growing up as a child of the 1960s, peace, love and harmony were the words being chanted by the hippies, flower chil‑

dren and all who questioned authority and rallied against the Vietnam War. I remember thinking how I couldn’t wait to grow up. I knew in my young mind it was only a matter of time before these youthful rebels would age and mature and eventually be able to take their place in the world of politics and public opinion. With it, they would be

able to change all the things they saw wrong with the “establishment” from a place of power and influence, as op‑posed to “from the streets.”

I recall my excitement, thinking what a wonderful world it will be, knowing that these brave crusad‑ers were blazing a trail before me, their radical new views and opinions becoming a reality. And at that young age, I recognized I would be the first generation to reap the benefits of their efforts. I felt blessed to be born in such a historic time.

Wow, was I wrong.Often I ask myself, where have

all the flower children gone? Where are the young men and women who fought for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Where are the people who burned flags, bras and draft cards; who marched on college campuses and on Washington D.C., so their voices could be heard? I find it hard to believe the thoughts and values they fought so valiantly for have disappeared and are only a fond memory of a golden age gone by.

The sound of hopelessnessOver the past few months, this point has become painfully obvious. As I work with clients and talk with friends I hear the sound of hopelessness in their voices. They watch as gas and food prices fluctuate. They gaze in disbelief as senseless violence escalates. They stand by helplessly as their jobs are moved overseas and their personal freedoms are taken away one by one. In the end, they are left feeling impo‑tent because they are unable to control the path their lives are taking and feel powerless to change it.

It’s interesting, because on an individual basis, all we want is to be happy, healthy and live our lives in integrity. We want to know that we will have a job to go to on Monday. We want to be able to feed our chil‑dren, breath the air around us, drink the water and step outside our homes. Instead we have become increasingly

alienated by the harsh reality of our world, a reality which creates conflicts between how things are and how we would like them to be. Thus we end up feeling dissatisfied and give up all hope of a better, simpler life.

Hopelessness is a hard emotion to experience; one we have embraced at some point in our lives. It seems to happen just before we hit rock bottom, when we can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel or when life seems futile and we just want to give up. It is a natural part of the human condition.

Over the last six months, the feel‑ing of hopelessness has become over‑whelming for many of us. Every time we turn around there’s a crisis. Some‑one we love dies, we lose our job or our child falls ill. After the situation we are facing is handled, it isn’t long before another challenge steps into our lives and once more the drama begins anew. With this unrelenting pressure, we are left feeling tired and disillusioned ‑‑ transforming the most optimistic person into a pessimist.

Today, the pressures being experi‑enced are not only coming from our personal lives but also from a much larger community ‑‑ the world of big business and the political arena. As we watch what is going on in the world we may think “What can I do to change or affect what is going on?” Unfortu‑nately, in our state of hopelessness, the answer we receive is “nothing.”

Because we believe our lone voice will never be heard, we end up conceding to the futility of fighting the establishment. And in our sea of inner disquiet we realize that we are being coerced into accepting a system which does not support us and the greater good of society. It is from this perspective that we surrender our power and feel we are unable to bring about change.

By Dr. Rita Louise Over the last six months, the feel-ing of hopeless-ness has become overwhelming for many of us.

Hope

Page 11: Balanced Living Spring Issue 2009

Darkest before the dawnIt is said, that it is always darkest before the dawn. For many of us, the truth is we cannot even see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are living in the midst of darkness, hoping and praying for even the faintest glimmer of light to emerge. And so while this period in hu‑man history may not be fun, there are many blessings that will come from it.

The good news is, hopelessness causes us to go within. It forces us to reflect and evaluate our lives. It pro‑vides us the opportunity to uncover steps necessary to alter our life course. As a result, we find a strength which helps to build our inner resolve and restore our faith.

We also have to realize that we are not alone. There are countless millions who are feeling trapped, hopeless and at the end of their rope. What the “Powers‑That‑Be” don’t real‑ize is that it is only a matter of time before they push us far enough into a corner that we will have no choice but to take a stand. When that happens, it won’t matter what they say or want

us to do. When we determine enough is enough the strength of our unity as a whole will make a difference and a change will begin on all levels.

So for all of us, the sick, the tired, the forlorn, remember that it’s just a matter of time before things get better. Change is inevitable. So whether to‑day, tomorrow or next year, we must let the light shine into our darkened tunnels to lift the veil of hopelessness and despair. With this newfound sense of hope, we will be able to walk peacefully through the darkest

of night. We will find through our renewed courage, fortitude and sense of self that we will be able to create a world of change.

T he current economic crisis has brought a lot of uncer-tainty, concern and fear into our lives. Mother Earth pro-

vides us with some excellent oppor-tunities to deal with and learn from our current challenges. Here are a few things you should consider doing:

Walk a labyrinth: Walking a labyrinth in a contemplative fashion is a great way to get insights, and hopefully answers, to the challenges you are facing. Labyrinths are sacred paths created in a special pattern. The labyrinth contains the cumula-tive thoughts and aspirations of all the soul seekers that have come be-fore. When you walk the labyrinth’s

path you will be tapping into the collective thoughts of other spiritual seekers that have been there before you. This cumulative focus of search-ing to connect with the divine is what makes the labyrinth a well spring of insights and inspirations.

Before you go for your labyrinth walk spend some time thinking about your purpose for going. Are you looking to connect with the divine, get an answer to question, help with understanding your current situation, or seeking direction? At the labyrinth, walk its path in a slow contemplative manner while concentrating on your question as you walk. If your mind wanders bring it back into focus on your question. Your answer may come quickly or it may take days or several

visits. The Labyrinth Society pro-vides more infor-mation on labyrinths as well as a locator to find one near you: www.labyrinthsociety.org/

Talk a walk in the woods. A walk in the woods is a great way to reinvigorate yourself and get perspec-tive. Mother Nature provides a host of vitalizing benefits whose power can be diminished in an urban or suburban setting.

Chances are when you are in nature you will be in a place unen-cumbered by the modern world where you will be better able to tap into Mother Earth’s essence. Leave the accoutrements of the modern world

like a cell phone behind when you go

for your walk.Remember to pause.

Stop and periodically focus on your breath and the surroundings. Imagine that Mother Earth is sending her light and love into you. Such a focus will better help you appreciate Mother Earth and better help you take in all her benefits.

Build a shrine or altar. Build a shrine in your garden, or altar in your apartment if you do not have a garden. You want to create a sanctuary of peace and harmony where you can find refuge when you are troubled. The shrine could be something as simple as a few stones in a circle, or a statue. Try to choose

something dear to your heart. Place emphasis on choosing your location. The key is your intention and focus. Honor it with burning some incense, or a smudge stick once you have made your decision.

Make your shrine a special place. Meditate there, think loving thoughts and thoughts of the divine while near it. Always approach it in peace and with a loving heart. Over time you will find that you will immediately become

peaceful and loving as you approach your shrine. If this state of mind is diffi-cult, just give thanks to Spirit/God for some of your many blessings. Nurture it and it will nurture you.

Visit a sacred site. A pilgrim-age to a sacred site is a time-honored tradition. Visit a place that is part of your faith tradition or ask a friend for suggestions or search the web. The key is to visit a place that ex-cites and inspires you. While there are many reasons to visit a sacred site a pilgrimage during a crisis it can take your focus off of the pres-ent situation and give you perspec-tive as you distance yourself from your difficulty.

The journey can be better than the

visit. So plan, reflect and study ahead for your visit.

I often find that a sacred site can have a particular ambience or purpose that is a reflection of what has oc-curred there. For example, Bare Hill on the eastern shore of Canandaigua Lake (30 miles southeast of Rochester, NY, www.jubileeinitiative.org/Sa-credBareHill.html) is site the Seneca Nation held their council fires. It was a place where they gathered to reach consensus and find solutions to their problems. Because of that it is a great place to go if you are soul searching. I call it “the place of the Big Answer.”

These are only a few of the ways that Mother Earth can help you during troubling times. Our modern day technological world has deprived us of Mother Earth’s nurturing benefits. When you go to her and open your heart you will receive a clearing and centering as well as an increased energy level as you reconnect to source.

The BeckonsBy George Catlin, Ph.D.

Since the dawn of time, hu-manity has sought to know itself and master the consider-able challenges of life. These

two themes, self-understanding and mastery of all the perils of daily existence, have run through every chapter in the long history of our race.

Today we are in a new chapter of this story, and both themes are poised for new turns. On the side of self-knowledge, we are now truly a global community with access to one another throughout the entire world. We can now see, hear and talk to our brothers and sisters everywhere on earth. This unprecedented change brings with it tremendous opportuni-ties to meet the basic challenges of

life. We can now see that all human-ity struggles for the same things: life, security and relationship to one another. We can also see that all have approached these basic needs through varying structures of finance, govern-ment and religion.

All this tells us two important things about ourselves: we aspire to com-mon ends and we get there through different routes. These basic facts provide the foundation for the new time that is directly before us. It will surely be a time in which we learn to respect different approaches to

common ends. It will also be a time when we think very clearly about those ends. What do we really want and how can that best be achieved?

Today, two fundamentally differ-ent answers to this question are being

advanced. One group suggests that material wealth is the most desir-able goal and that it is best realized through global capitalism. This group controls most of the raw materials and assets of the planet and would like to control them all. They believe that only when they have such “access” to all natural resources and every poten-tial consumer will we actually reach the desired state of well-being.

A very different goal is advocated by a less well organized group of men and women from every corner of the earth. This group seeks sharing, justice and right human relations as their goal. They know that this can be achieved only when all people acknowledge the common needs and diverse methodologies of humanity. They know that no one system serves all people equally well, and they advocate allowing local differences to flourish in a world with so many

different kinds of people – all with dif-ferent backgrounds and destinies.

This second group longs for the opportunity to be recognized on equal footing with the first, but they lack the wherewithal to achieve that goal. They know they need coordination, resources and access to the hearts and minds of humanity in order to make their case before the capitalists have dominated everything.

Into this fray now comes a group of individuals who know the heart of humanity and who offer their wise counsel to all who seek it. They are our Elder Brothers, people just like us who have gone far ahead on the spiritual path into realization of the divine na-ture that lives in all. They bring their gifts to a world desperately in need of reconciliation, peace and justice.

This group has been known to the western world since 1877, when H.P. Blavatsky first published her ground-

breaking treatise, “Isis Unveiled.” In that she revealed the existence of a brotherhood of service that has existed for all time, quietly serving humanity as best they could from mountain and desert retreats throughout the world.

These great ones have always sought to reach and aid humanity however possible, but their efforts were severely limited by our need to find our own way through the challenges of life. Like an adolescent species, humanity needed to flex its own muscles, make its own mistakes, and learn its own lessons. Today, however, we are more mature, more aware of the dangers before us, and more able to receive the guidance of those who know our struggle.

We have an unparalleled oppor-tunity in the coming years to build a new civilization: one in which all have enough to meet their true needs and all know their fellow human beings

as brothers and sisters within a single family. This time, this opportunity, this chance to re-form our basic ap-proach to life comes exactly when we need it most and are best able to take advantage of it. We will respond posi-tively to it because we are a species that has always met every challenge with our best effort. Today, now, this year and this time call to the very best within us. May we all find that God-given power and love that will enable us to build a world fitting our divine origin and destiny.

Many people enjoy holistic therapies to keep them-selves healthy and happy. We relax, de-stress and

heal on many levels. Many people are unaware that many of these alterna-tive therapies are available for their pets too. To most people’s surprise, animals find massage and various sorts of energy work exactly what they need to keep on a healthy path. I know this to be a fact, as this is my world... healing pets.

For those of us who practice holistic care for pets, we find that every day is a new beginning with so many les-sons, along with new challenges and miracles. Our teachers are the beloved four-legged creatures that surround us. It seems to me that the animals choose to help us in life’s journey. I find that it is helpful to stay focused with careful

attention so we may learn the many lessons that our animal guardians are here to teach us.

Pets can’t explain the problem in their own words. They can’t research their condition. Yet animals are so very wise... they know who can help, who will help. A trained practitioner in holistic care for pets learns different ways to communicate with animals. By communicating on an energetic level, these health care providers

begin to find that in becoming still and present, they learn can “hear” the animals.

By clearing their mind, therapists can tap into the animal’s unique system and evaluate and balance their energy bodies. Often healers work with the animals on the floor in front of their owners or sitting on the owner’s lap. Truly our pets know and have shown that energy balance is not only helping them but helping their owners too. They are a relationship, a unit, in an unspoken way and the energy balancing work that is done with one benefits the other.

The Chi energy restored through energy work and also through good nutrition help our beloved pets feel more energetic, even puppy like. This relaxation/ balance response to ho-listic care is profound and astonishes most first time clients.

Animal therapiesMany different therapies are available for our pets including Color Therapy, Reiki, Healing Touch for Animals, CranioSacral and Acupressure.

Color Therapy uses color and light to balance energy of the physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental body. Specific colors may be applied by lights, essences, fabric, gemstones and colored glasses. Color can be targeted at the energy centers of the body and acupuncture points to bring balance to the body.

Reiki (Universal Life Force Energy) is an ancient Japanese art of natural healing. With this touch healing technique, the healer uses her hands to transmit energy, healing and balancing the energy flows of the physical and emotional body. Reiki brings about deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages, detoxifies the sys-tem, provides new vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases body vibrational frequency.

Healing Touch for Animals (HTA) is a compilation of biofield techniques by Carol Komitor, LMT, CHTP to facilitate the healing process. Healing Touch for Animals works with the energy body to provide the correct physiology so the body can heal. HTA helps with emotional, physical, and behavioral issues. It works by releasing endorphins to establish a

By Neal Szpatura

Mary Patterson and Patricia Sage have a combined total of more than 50 years experience

in alternative healing, teaching and spiritual guidance working in Greater Cleveland and beyond. They saw in each other unique and powerful commitments to the empowerment of patients/clients who commit to em-brace personal healing, strength and joy. Together they created Spiraling Upward, a practice devoted to helping people live balanced lives by harmo-nizing body, mind and spirit.

“Healing is a process of coming into alignment with pure consciousness,” ac-cording to Mary. “Everything we think or feel has the potential to transmute to a higher state of enlightenment about our character or process, about our life,” she continues. “As that occurs, we can become aware of our environment from new perspectives with deeper, truer insight. We then have the ability − right that moment − to create a new reality about how we interact with life.” Our culture hasn’t taught this sort of thing, or not much, anyway.

“People may come to us looking for healing, looking outside them-selves,” Patricia says. “Our true, nat-ural state, though, is to be the brilliant, amazing creators of our world. We

have all the art supplies available to us and can create our life and color it in any way we can imagine it. Healing, then, is fi nding the right ways, unique to each of us, to bring everything into harmony and balance and joy.”

Patricia talks about providing a “safe space” in which clients can explore what may be necessary to help them attain healing. “I’m always conscious that I don’t heal anyone but myself,” she says. According to Mary, if the two were drawn to work together by common viewpoints of what a center of wellness would look like and what their interaction with clients would be, their desire to open a center was cemented by their experience of one particular healing modality. In early 2007, “We saw the CYMA 1000 at a training seminar,” says Patricia. “We saw and experienced rapid dimin-ishment of pain. We knew immedi-ately we wanted to bring this amazing sound/magnetic therapy to others as part of our mutual goals of eliminating

pain (physical, emotional and mental) in people’s lives. With surcease of pain its easier to empower ourselves and blossom into the beautiful beings we’re intended to be.”

In creating Spiraling Upward, they added the CYMA 1000 to an array of alternative health-care practices including massotherapy, Margaret Ruby’s DNA of Healing, sacred ge-ometry, Richard Bartlett’s Matrix Energetics, Fred Payne’s Phoenix Vibrational Healing, Dr. Hew Len’s Ho’oponopono, nutritional and herbal supplements, and personal spiritual guidance toward healing.

Bearing witnessBoth Mary and Patricia have been infl uenced in their practices by witnessing instances of remarkable healing. Mary speaks of working with Dr. Ted Dungan, a holistic Chiroprac-tor out of Flint, Mich. “He was a very well known healer and inventor of holistic tools for healing the body,” she recounts. “We were doing a presentation on alignment techniques in Canada. He brought one of his inventions, a ‘ray gun’ that emitted colored energy waves. A local farmer had a skin melanoma the size of a quarter on his cheek and within fi ve minutes I watched this cancerous form shrink down to the size of a dime.” All of the tissue where the cancer had

been [around the boundaries of the melanoma] was healed and that skin returned to normal within those fi ve minutes, Mary observed.

Patricia also shares an extraordi-nary experience. It was, as she says, a very simple act of healing. In her twen-ties, she saw a healer/teacher, “…wipe his hand across someone’s forehead and remove a headache. That shifted my reality box to know that imbal-ances can be instantly − alchemically – altered,” she says with a smile.

When asked why they “love their job,” both Patricia and Mary smile with the delight of people who have so many places to start their answers they don’t know where to begin.

“It’s so easy to love working in the beautiful, infi nitely ingenious energy of the Creator,” Mary beams, “whether it’s through structural bodywork or in clearing energies that are causing dis-ruption within the self.” She thinks for a moment. “My work is my play and my play is my work. And this is good.”

Patricia adds, “Seeing people gain strength, relaxation and joy, seeing them become awake and aware, em-powered to choose more wisely as they create their lives − that’s exciting.”

Creating Pawsitive Change for Your Pet

Waggin’Tails

By Kathryn Gaster Allen

It’s something we may not even think about. Fido and Fluffy enjoy their dry food and have no ill effects, so why should we be

concerned with food safety – it’s dry food after all. Well, food safety does indeed have a place when it comes to feeding your pet.

Between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2007, a total of 70 cases of a strain of Salmonella enterica were identified in 19 states, mostly in the northeastern U.S. The official inves-tigation identified the source of infec-tion as dry dog food produced at a manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania. This was not and is not an isolated incident. According to Medline Plus, an online service from the National

Institutes of Health, officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have stated that, “Salmo-nella infections in humans from dry dog food may be an under-recognized source of illness in people, especially young children”.

Remembering our own spinach scare and tomato panic of recent times, pet guardians need to consider proper food handling, whether it’s commercially prepared dry food, a home-cooked pet meal, and especially, if you choose to feed raw.

Consider these safety tips:● Make sure you purchase canned

or bagged foods and treats which are undamaged, with no dents, tears or discolorations.

● If at all possible, don’t feed pets

in the kitchen or allow them around food-preparation areas. Yes, that’s much easier said than done, but if your pets do eat in the kitchen, and you have young children, make sure they understand that the pet bowls are absolutely off limits to them.

● Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and hot water before and after handling food and treats.

● Wash your pet’s food bowls, dishes and scoops with soap and hot water after each use, avoiding the kitchen sink if you can.

● Use a clean, dedicated scoop, spoon or cup to dish out wet or dry food.

● Dispose of old or spoiled food safely in a covered trash receptacle outside the home.

● Promptly refrigerate or discard leftover wet food.

● Store dry food and treats in a cool, dry place.

● Store dry food in its original bag inside a clean, dedicated plastic container with a lit, and keep the top of the bag folded close.

Food safety handling tipsWhile you may feel safer if you’re feeding your pet a home-prepared diet, made with human grade ingredients, remember the basic principles of safe food handling:

● When storing, place raw meat,

poultry, and seafood in containers or sealed plastic bags to prevent their juices from dripping onto other foods. Raw juices often contain harmful bacteria.

● Wash your hands with soap and hot water before and after handling food.

● Wash cutting boards, dishes, and counter tops with hot, soapy water after preparing each food item and before you go on to the next item.

● Always use a clean cutting board. ● If possible, use one cutting board

for fresh produce and a separate one for raw meat, poultry, and seafood.

● Once cutting boards become ex-cessively worn or develop hard-to-clean grooves, you should replace them.

● Refrigerate or freeze leftovers within 2 hours or sooner in clean, shallow, covered containers to prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying.

Keep yourself, your family and your pets healthy by always handling your food and theirs in a safe, sanitary manner. Everyone’s digestive system will thank you!

continued from page 16deeper relaxation and state of being. By allowing muscles to relax, circulation is increased, sending more oxygen, nu-trients, and hormones into the body to support healing. Both HTA and Reiki are bio-field, energy based modalities.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch manual technique, which enhances the body’s natural healing processes. Osteopath, John E. Upledger, developed this intuitive guided therapy. Generally using a very lighttouch, the body is evalu-ated and gently manipulated to help the body release any restrictions and promote the normal rhythm and flow of the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems. The length of time and the number of sessions needed is extremely variable and depends on, among other factors, the layers of the injury or trauma that may mask the original cause of the problem as well as the body’s defense mechanisms. This gentle approach follows the body’s lead to uncover the source of pain or dysfunction that can open the path to wellness.

Massage and Acupressure help your pets physically as well as psycho-logically, helping to relieve distress, anxiety and discomfort. Research shows that animals that are handled when they are young learn faster and have more advanced neural develop-ment than animals that are not held. In humans, massage has been known to raise the pain threshold and reduce treatment soreness. It can do the same for your pet. Massage can be used as a prevention measure for canine

athletes. Other benefits include toxin release, increase in flexibility, build confidence and restore energy.

Optimum health and balanceThese holistic treatments work with the body to achieve optimum health and balance. All pets can benefit. These techniques help our pets heal themselves through relaxation, increased circula-tion, toxin release and immune regula-tion. Hands-on therapy can be beneficial with the following conditions:• Pre and post surgery; calms the animal before surgery and reduces healing time.• Any illness, including cancer.• Competitive canines or dogs in ser-vice, helps focus and reduces stress.• Emotional/ behavioral issues and everyday stresses.• Physical injuries to work with the body to reduce pain and increase mobility.• As a reward for your loving companion.

Holistic pet therapy is a wonder-ful complement for your pet’s health care. It is a way of giving back to our companions for all the unconditional love they give us everyday. Most pets are healers in their own way and often reflect our illnesses or imbalances. We can often learn to help ourselves and our pets by addressing physical, spiritu-al and emotional unbalances. As each of us attempts to balance our lives, we will see the healthy vibration resonate through our lives and the world.

Always seek veterinary advice before starting any therapy for your pet.
