BAKEWELL MARKET Monday 29 th June (Store Heifers from Porter Brothers, Teveresal) (R Weston & Son, Longnor) The windy and at times very wet weekend ensured decent entries of stock at Bakewell with 557 Cattle and 1394 Sheep on offer. Trade was good on all fronts with Store Cattle particularly dear, the entry of 253 sold on an outstanding trade with steers to £1260, heifers to £1180 and feeding bulls £880. If you have store cattle to sell, Bakewell Buyers would like the chance to bid for them, speak to Alastair Sneddon if you need to know more. Finished Cattle were out in force with 125 forward and a solid trade throughout. Top figures 235p and £1602, the heifer average whilst back on the week was still respectable at 194.5 pence. There was a substantial entry of 104 OTM cattle and Feeding Cows with the best on offer to 179p and £1508. The average was an impressive 126.3p. It was good to see more Calves coming forward with 75 on offer, the largest entry for many weeks and an excellent trade to boot, bulls to £440 and heifers £320. In the sheep department lamb numbers just failed to reach 1000 but only by 8 and despite the larger entry trade looked good. The best on offer to 268p and £117.65 with the SQQ at a healthy 220.8p. There were 373 Cull Sheep with ewes to £149 and the average a decent £86.09.

Important Note Regarding The Sale of Store Heifers At Bakewell stock is sold under The Livestock Auctioneers Association National Conditions of Sale which states that the vendor warrants that a heifer which is not described as having been running with the bull or as having been served or as being in-calf Is not in-calf at the time of sale. This warranty is a 6 Months & 5 Day Warranty. We have recently had a number of heifers turning up in-calf on finishing farms. This causes all sorts of problems and animal welfare issues. Please if you are bringing heifers to sell bear in mind your responsibilities under the conditions of sale and if you have any doubt about the status of the animals, make sure the auctioneer is aware, so that potential purchasers can be properly informed. Obviously, in the case of a breach of warranty the vendor may be liable.

Having made that made important matter clear we can now report on a magnificent days trading. The special entry of 44 Lim x Suckler Bred Heifers from Messrs Porter Brothers of Teversal was a distinct highlight. Sold in decent bunched of up to 9 animals aged from 11 to 20 Months, the first 3 pens made £950, £810 and £810 this gives some indication of price levels.
