the Baker story

In 1893 a dutch immigrant named siebe Baker

made his first piece of furniture: a combination

desk and bookcase, a sought-after design in those

days. Within a few years his business grew to

encompass several other pieces for the home. over

the following decades the Baker family established

its american company as an authority on old World

craftsmanship at the forefront of contemporary

design. the company became a style leader

for many generations to follow.

Working with the duke of Bedford, Baker reproduces items from Woburn Abbey, the duke's great country estate, one of the seven great treasure houses in all of england.

Baker introduces the jacques garcia collection by renowned designer Jacques Garcia, bringing to its designer series garcia's interpretive mix of 18th and 19th century french design, laced with a distinct moderninsm.

Baker: an Illustrated hIstory

When hollis Baker became president after his

father’s death in 1925, his intentions to improve

the Baker offering led him abroad to research

fi ne antiques and craftsmanship techniques. he

traveled the world with the eye of a collector,

drawing inspiration from english country estates

to the german Bauhaus and art deco movements.

upon each trip home he expanded the line with

fashionable, collectable furniture made with old

World craftsmanship. With hollis’ collection of

rare antique furniture, photographs and drawings,

the company opened its own furniture museum

in the 1940s for further research and inspiration,

amassing thousands more pieces from around

the world. Baker assumed its position at the

nexus between tradition and now, creating the

Infl uenced by the Bauhaus and art deco periods, designer Gilbert Rohde lends his modern aesthetic to Baker.

Baker commissions widely heralded set designer Kem Weber to create several pieces in his signature West coast style.

Both contemporary and timeless, designer T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings creates furniture for Baker emphasizing molded contours and cool classicism.

drawing on the tenets of beauty, simplicity, and utility, Baker introduces scandinavian modern furniture by danish architect, Finn Juhl.

Baker introduces the Barbara Barry collection by prominent designer Barbara Barry to wide acclaim, a compilation of chic forms based on art deco design and the glamour of 1930s hollywood.

nodding to the traditional, with strong modernistic infl uences, Baker unveils the fi rst commerical endeavor by world renowned interior designer Bill Sofi eld.

or one of our renowned designers, the

result is always distinctive. upholstery

is fashion, personifying style. our

approach to upholstery honors creative

designs, boutique fabric mills and a

preference for hand-applied detail.

comfort knowing that comfort is

equal to style, exceptional care is put

into the design process. Baker uses up

to eleven layers of materials on seats

and backs to give exacting comfort

and provide lasting quality. the seat

cushions are constructed by wrapping

highly resilient foam with virgin fibers

and blends of waterfowl down. a

comfortable seat is the combination

of construction and materials. seating

construction consists of the seat

height and depth as well as back pitch,

which changes depending on the

intended use. a lower seat height and

deeper seat depth are more casual; the

addition of pitch will take a formal sofa

to a relaxed one.

craftsmanshIp It starts with the

frame. the finest-quality lumber is used

with interlocking joinery, braced and

fastened to last a lifetime. the seating

base is made with steel coil springs,

selected from twenty-nine possible

combinations, and then hand-tied and

knotted into place.

the comfort is created by using

materials in layers to give support at the

base and softness on the top. We use

at least three layers and up to eleven

layers to ensure the utmost comfort

and lasting quality, where others might

use one or two. Baker fabrics, with over

a thousand to choose from, are hand-

cut, one at a time, sewn and applied

by our team of fine tailors. meticulous

construction ensures that the look and

feel of tomorrow is just as beautiful as

the look and feel of today.

Baker approaches the design and construction of upholstered furniture in the

same manner as a couturier approaches a garment. our unique philosophy

of combining the eye and the hand — style, comfort and craftsmanship —

has been in place for nearly one hundred years. Baker knows that what is

inside your piece of furniture is just as important as what is on the outside.

Baker constructIon

the cliché about “hidden quality” applies to

the way upholstered furniture is built. the

interior construction of the piece ultimately

affects its lifespan and comfort. Baker has

always been an innovator in styling and

construction. When high-crown soft cushions

became popular there was no way to retain

the crown in use without a lot of heavy fluffing

after use. Baker designed and patented a

soft and luxurious core construction that will

retain its shape better than any other cushion

construction with only normal fluffing. at

Baker, we do not view construction as distinct

from the look and feel.

inside width regardless of the arm selected. All sectional

pieces are based on a cushion width of 26 inches per cushion

and will have an inside width in multiples of the 26 inch seat

cushion regardless of the arm selected. The overall width will

vary depending on the size of the arm and is listed in the size

chart below.

• Silhouettes that are available by the inch are available in whole

inch increments only. The overall width of these pieces is

determined by the measurement at the widest point. Sofas can

be adjusted to a maximum width of 120 inches. ottoman width

or length measurements can be adjusted to a maximum of

52 inches. Chairs can not be made smaller than the standard size.
