The decade of dedication of BAJA SAEINDIA
took place from the 15th to 21st of February,
2017 at Pithampur, Indore. The national level
competition for engineering undergraduates,
which kick started ten years back in the winters
of 2007, brought forth All-Terrain Vehicles
(ATVs) from over 175 engineering colleges
competing for the title of the overall champions
and awards worth lakhs rupees.
The event was held in the grand premises of
National Automotive Testing and Research &
Development Infrastructure Project--NATRiP,
and attracted participation from 35 eBAJA
teams, apart from the 150 teams for the
mBAJA.
The event was divided into various stages which
started from the technical evaluation of the
vehicles followed by Static events, Dynamic
events and finally the most awaited Endurance
Race. The first day started with the registration
process for all the teams, and proceeded
towards the all-important technical evaluation
levels.
Apart from the overall inspection of the vehicle
by the specially trained Judges from the
automotive industry, the rules also constituted
the engine check and the brake test. The entire
process also continued into the second day as
teams strived to clear their technical evaluation
and henceforth become eligible for the dynamic
events at the site.

Alongside this process were running the static
rounds of design, sales, cost etc., all of which
witnessed changes in their conduction and
methodologies. The dynamic events were
opened to the teams on the first day, and went
on for all parts of the third day too.
In addition to the existing kitty of the dynamic
events was the new armor of Sled Pull. Parallel
to the entire course, the eBAJA teams also had
their respective technical evaluations and
dynamic events at the track. Their endurance
race too was successfully flagged off on the
penultimate day of the event.
The final showdown of the endurance race took
place on the ultimate day of the event. Team
Avishkar from NIT Jalandhar, which also built
the lightest vehicle at the competition, started
at the coveted pole position during the 4-hour
extravaganza.
The race concluded with Team Nemesis, College
of Engineering Pune and Team Kraftwagen,
Sinhgad College of Engineering Pune grabbing
the title of the ‘Overall Winners’ for mBAJA and
eBAJA respectively.
The valedictory ceremony brought an official
close to the event, with various prizes being
distributed in both the mBAJA and eBAJA
categories and the simultaneous launch of BAJA

CHENNAI DIVISION LECTURE MEETING:
SAEINDIA Southern Section Chennai Division organized Lecture
Meeting program on ‘‘Design and Applications of High Contact
Ratio Gears” on 11th February 2017, Saturday at AIEMA,
Chennai. The Speaker was Mr. R. Ramesh Kumar. Scientist E,
CVRDE, Chennai.
Mr. M. Khader Basha, Additional Director, CVRDE, Chennai
Divisional Chairman welcomed all the participants of the
lecture meeting. Mr. K. Ganapathy Subramanian, DGM,
Marketing, M/s Simpson & Co Ltd., Chennai welcomed and
introduced speaker to the participants and handed over the
session for his lecture.
Mr. R. Ramesh Kumar started his lecture by explaining the topic
of the day Design and Application of High Contact Ratio Gears.
The main problems in gear design have changed over time.
Previously size, inter changeability, strength, and efficiency
were the principal concerns in the gear design process. The
development of high performance mechanical drives with
reduced noise presented a generic problem in the power
transmission market, and especially in the various gearing
fields.
High contact ratio can be achieved by different ways namely
increasing the number of teeth, lowering the pressure angle,
increasing the addendum factor. He has also shown the case
study wherein in CVRDE high speed gear box as well as high
torque gear assembly units were developed using HCR gear
concept and successfully test validated.
Mr. K. Ganapathy Subramanian, Treasurer SAEISS Chennai
Division delivered the vote of thanks. Mr. V. Ramakrishnan
presented the memento to Mr. R. Ramesh Kumar as the token
of gratitude.

Automotive QMS Standard IATF 16949 – Key Requirements
and Challenges” which will be the key factor in automobile
user expectation from industry. He impressed the participants
with his exemplary talks about the New Automotive QMS
Standard IATF 16949 – Key Requirements and Challenges
which can be implemented the quality and supply
management .All the participants were very much interested
to interact with him.
IATF 16949 replaces ISO/TS 16949, which was jointly
developed by the IATF and the ISO in 1999. Because ISO/TS
16949 has been widely adopted by automotive manufacturers
and suppliers, certification to IATF 16949 is expected to be a
procurement requirement for most manufacturers, thereby
creating a certification mandate for automotive suppliers
throughout the supply chain.

The background and objective of this workshop is of
Frequency domain technology for the analysis for
vibration response, fatigue analysis and loads processing
has developed at a slow pace during the last 40 years.
These new methods will fundamentally change the way
analysis and design is done in many industries
(automotive, aerospace, defence, ground vehicle, etc.).
Taken together, these new methods represent a
breakthrough in dynamic analysis, which makes the
frequency domain more practical (for both random
response and fatigue).
This workshop highlighted the key topics where
significant new tools have been created. For each topic
the background technical advancement was set out
followed by a practical CAE based examples. The
following topics were covered viz;
• Base Shake with Superimposed Sine Sweep in
Frequency Domain.
• Simultaneous Sines Plus Random in Time Domain.
