About Baja SAE

The University of Rochester Baja SAE Team is a student run program that designs, builds, and races a single person off road vehicle each year in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Collegiate Design Series. The competitions, which occur throughout the year in different regions of the country, last for several days and culminate in a grueling four hour endurance race that pushes cars and teams to the limit. Being involved in Baja SAE allows students to gain valuable real-world experience in their field. Students apply their theoretical understanding of engineering while dealing with production and management responsibilities such as cost and manufacturing analysis. Designs must be fast, robust, comfortable, safe, and easy to manufacture.

What We Do

Baja is entirely student run. Lathe, milling, welding, and design skills are passed down from one Baja

generation to the next. Many students come in without any practical experience, but we do not turn

anybody away. We take pride in shaping young engineers whether that means honing design skills or

learning how to use a wrench. We use advanced FEA and CAD software, but that does not mean that

we are afraid of getting dirty.

Recent Success and Future Goals

This past season, we attended events in Pittsburg, Kansas and Peoria, Illinois. After a decent showing in

Kansas, the team got stronger and achieved our best results on record in Illinois. Out of over 120

registered schools, the University of Rochester scored 19th overall, 7th in sales presentation, 11th in cost

event, and 19th in the endurance race. With key members returning for the 2011-2012 season, our goal

is to break into the top ten for the first time in team history. A particularly large and active freshman

class of recruits will aid those veterans. This year, events will be held in Madison, Wisconsin and Auburn,

Alabama.

The Car

Of course, the star of the team is our car. It features: 10 HP Briggs and Stratton engine

CVTech Continually Variable Transmission

Custom machined front and rear uprights

Custom fabricated 4130 roll cage, A-arm

front suspension, H-arm rear suspension

Custom drive train built around a Matex

planetary gear reduction

Fox Shocks

This year, no stone will lay unturned. With a larger

team, every component of the car can be analyzed and

optimized. Key goals for this year are:

Semi trailing arm multi link suspension

Driver communication system

Custom designed planetary reduction

Optimized drive train that no longer requires

chain and sprockets

Custom machined brake master cylinders

CNC molded body panels

Overall sharper and cleaner look

Why We Need You

We are one of the smallest represented engineering schools at competition. Despite funding from the

University, we are always in need of additional financial backing. In past years, we have reused many

components from old cars that were not optimal for new designs. That is a problem because we

redesign the car ever year. We are always short on spare tires and other parts, which can be critical in an

endurance race. We do whatever we can to make it to competition. However, this year is different. We

have the opportunity to achieve unheard of success for a team of our size. This is not the year to make

compromises. This is a year to achieve.

We are asking for your help. We hope that you support our program with a tax-deductible contribution.

Your donation will go towards materials, parts, tools, heat-treating, CNC time, gas, and travel expenses.

Donations range from $50-$2000. We are also happy to accept raw materials and tools as sponsorship.

This year, we are looking to raise at least $8,000. For donations over $200, you will receive a welded UR

Baja sculpture with a picture of our car. For all other donations, you will receive a framed photograph of

our new car. All sponsors are invited to attend a tour of our shop and have their name or company logo

on our car.

This is your chance to help students become engineers, leaders, and innovators. We hope that

sponsoring the University of Rochester Baja team is something that interests you. If you have any

questions or would like to discuss our program in greater detail, please visit our website at

rochesterbaja.com or contact myself. Thank you for your time, and we hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
