The History of Rainscreens
• Centuries old technology
• First modern rainscreens were timber, 1940’s, Scandinavia
• Alcoa Building, Pittsburgh, USA, 1952
• The term “rainscreen cladding” adopted 1970’
How do rainscreens work?

Pressure Equalised

(Pressure moderated)
Pressure Equalised
• Cavities are compartmentalised
• Openings calculated to allow rapid ingress and egress of air
• Water ingress reduced by ‘equalisation’ of internal and external pressures (pressure moderated system)
• Drained above compartment levels
• Suited to tall areas of rainscreen.
• Design intensive
• High pressures generated at corners require that the centres of vertical compartments are reduced
Cavity barriers
• Fire and smoke spread in rainscreen cavities is particularly dangerous
• It may travel more rapidly in the cavity than on the outside face of the cladding
• It may remain undetected by building users or Firefighters.
• Cavity barriers will limit the spread of fire and smoke
