T h e r e i s a g r e a t d e a l o f d i s a g r e e m e n t i n th e s c i e n t i fi c l i te r a t u re a b o u t t h e u s e f u l n e s so f s p e c i f i c b e h a v i o r s a s i n d i c a t o r s o f d e c e p t i o n , a l t h o u g h t h e r e i s a g r e e m e n t t h a t a t l e a s tf o r s o m e m e a s u r e s , o b s e r v e r s c a n d e t e c t l i e s ( o r l i a r s ) , o r a t l e a s t c e r t a i n s t a t e m e n t s o f" l i a r s , " a t r a t e s s l i g h t l y e x c e e d i n g c h a n c e l e v e l s [12,17,20]. I t is f r e q u e n t l y m e n t i o n e d ,h o w e v e r , t h a t o n e o f t h e s e r i o u s s h o r t c o m i n g s i n t h e a v a i l a b l e r e s e a r c h i s th a t a l m o s t a l lo f i t h a s b e e n c a r r i e d o u t i n l a b o r a t o r y e n v i r o n m e n t s [21]. I n s u c h c i r c u m s t a n c e s i t i sd i f f i c u l t , i f n o t i m p o s s i b l e , t o r e p l i c a t e t h e e m o t i o n a l i t y , t h e m o t i v a t i o n a n d t h e p s y c h o -l o g i c a l o r i e n t a t io n t h a t w o u l d b e e x p e c t e d i n re a l - l if e c i r c u m s t a n c e s . I n a d d i t i o n , l i a rs m o r e o f t e n e x -p r e s s e d r e s e r v a t i o n s a b o u t t h e s i tu a t i o n a l c o n t e x t a n d w e r e m o r e l i k e l y to c o m p l a i n a b o u tt h e p r o c e d u r e t h a n w e r e t r u th - t e ll e r s . T h e s e o b s e r v a t i o n s w e r e s u p p o r t e d b y H o r v a t h[ 6 ] w h o t a b u l a t e d v e r b a l a n d n o n v e r b a l b e h a v i o r s o f a s a m p l e o f 1 0 0 s u s p e c t s w h o h a du n d e r g o n e p o l y g r a p h e x a m i n a t i o n s ; t h e b e h a v i o r s o f t h e d e c e p t i v e s u s p e c t s w e r e g e n -e r a l l y s i g n i f i c a n t ly d i f f e re n t f r o m t h o s e o f t r u t h fu l s u s p e c t s . U n f o r t u n a t e l y , i n b o t h o ft h e s e s t u d i e s t h e re w a s a r e l ia n c e o n i n f o r m a t i o n c o l l e c t e d i m p r e s s i o n i s t i c a l l y a n d , w h i l et h es e , d a t a a r e c e r t a i n l y s u g g e s t i v e o f b e h a v i o r a l d i f f e r e n c e s b e t w e e n t r u th f u l a n d l y i n gs u s p e c t s , t h e re i s r e a s o n t o b e c a u t i o u s i n g e n e r a l i z i n g f r o m t h e m .

A t h i r d f ie l d s t u d y w a s r e p o r t e d b y B a r l a n d [23] a s p a r t o f a l a r g e r p r o j e c t to d e t e r m i n et he v a l i d i t y o f p o l y g r a p h e x a m i n a t i o n s . B a r l a n d s c o r e d a s m a l l s a m p l i n g o f s u s p e c t s 'b e h a v i o r a n d f o u n d t h a t 8 7 % o f h i s b e h a v i o r - b a s e d a s s e s s m e n t s c o r r e c t l y p r e d i c t e d t e s to u t c o m e s o n g u i l t y ( d e c e p t i v e ) s u s p e c t s w h e r e a s o n l y 5 0 % o f th e a s s e s s m e n t s o n i n -n o c e n t ( t r u t h fu l ) s u s p e c ts w e r e p r e d i c t i v e o f t h e p o l y g r a p h o u t c o m e s . B a r l a n d a l s o r e -p o r t e d , h o w e v e r , a s s o m e f i e l d p o l y g r a p h e x a m i n e r s c o n t e n d , t h a t h i s a s s e s s m e n t o fs u s p e c t s ' b e h a v i o r p r o v i d e d a n i m p o r t a n t r e a l it y c h e c k o n t h e p o l y g r a p h i c d a t a .

T h a t i s , a s i s t r u e w i th o th e rf i e ld r e s e a r c h i n v o lv in g d e t e c t i o n o f d e c e p t i o n , s u s p e c t s i n c o n f e s s io n - v e r i f i e d c a s e s m a yd i f f e r f r o m th e p o p u l a t i o n e n c o u n te r e d i n m o s t r e a l - l i f e c i r c u m s ta n c e s [25]. Unfortunately, such cases do not occur frequently. Hence, while co nfes si ons- -and per-haps factual ana ly si s- -a re the most practical and dependable criteria for field-basedresearch of the kind reported here, their limita tions must be carefully considered. Forthis reason, these findings should be cautiously generalized to real-life settings.

In spite of the caveats to be considered, these findings support the observations offield practitioners with respect to the Behavior Analysis Interview. The BAT appears tobe a procedure in which per sons with a professional interest in sorting truth-tellers fromliars, including, of course, almost all police investigators, would benefit from training.Further research is necessary to determine the effect of such training on the ability toelicit and to judge behavior and on the contribution that it may make to investi gator' sperformance.
