Baduy People

• The Baduy community inBanten is an utterly unique andclosed society.

• The Baduy is a tribe of between2,000 and 4,000 Sundanesespeaking people living in 27villages in the mountains southof Rangkasbitung.

• The Baduy are divided into twosub-groups; the Baduy Dalam(Inner Baduy), and the BaduyLuar (Outer Baduy).

• The origin of the word Baduymay come from the term"Bedouin", although othersources claim the source is aname of a local river

• The religion of the Baduy isknown as Agama SundaWiwitan, a combination oftraditional beliefs andHinduism.

• The Baduy also observe manymystical taboos. They areforbidden to kill, steal, lie,commit adultery, get drunk,eat food at night, take anyform of conveyance, wearflowers or perfumes, acceptgold or silver, touch money, orcut their hair.

• Some people believe that theBaduy are the descendants ofthe aristocracy of the SundaKingdom of Pajajaran wholived near Batutulis in the hillsaround Bogor

• Formal education for thechildren of Baduy is againsttheir traditional customs.They reject governmentproposal to build educationalfacilities in the villages.

OverviewOuter-Baduy that consist of 22 villages including Kompol village have issueregarding on clean water. The people must walk for a distance to get access toclean water. During dry-season it is more difficult to get water, most of thecrops that are daily routine as traditional farmer are at stake. It is why, YKIPsupport through the program of humanity aid on providing clean water forthe Baduy community.Kompol village consist of 30 families that are urge of clean water to supporttheir house-hold and daily activities.

Communal Toilet

OverviewThe project continue afterwards in May 2014 by providing communal toiletfor the Baduy Kompol. It is common that previously that villagers back in the90’s doesn’t concern about the health and hygiene. Nowadays more andmore Outer-Baduy are open to modernization including usage of toilet.The idea of “communal toilet” came up at the second assessment to Baduy,when by sight no toilet can be found elsewhere in the territory or even theirhouses. Even though clean water was provided, the villagers still needs to goto nearby water access to bath and washing their clothes
