Strategic Planning ApproachesStrategic Planning Approaches
PDSA - Plan-Do-Study-ActThe Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Worksheet is a useful tool for documenting a test of change. The PDSA cycle is shorthand for testing a change by developing a plan to test the change (Plan), carrying out the test (Do), observing and learning from the consequences (Study), and determining what modifications should be made to the test (Act).
OGSM - Objective, Goals, Strategies & Measures Developed in Japan in the 1950’s by the major car manufacturers, OGSM has since been adopted by many Fortune 500 companies (e.g. P&G) as their primary strategic planning tool. What It IsA strategic planning framework that uses a top-down approach to define the Objective, Goals, Strategies & Measures (OGSM) of your business. The output is a clear, simple and concise (ONE page) strategic plan:Objective: The objective / vision for your businessGoals: Translation of your vision into specific goals e.g. turnover, profit, market share, professional organisation etc.Strategies & Measures: What strategies (i.e. ‘choices’) will be necessary in order for you to achieve the goals (& ultimately the vision) and the specific measures (milestones) used to track progress
The OGSM methodology makes a clear distinction between the ‘business’ and the ‘organisation’ i.e. people. In this respect, goals, strategies & measures will be developed for both the business and organisation (but united under a single overall objective).
