We are called Human Rights Watch. Human rights are rights that everyone has. Like the right to:

• Be treated fairly and be safe

• Speak out and have a say

• Go to school and work

• Have a family and a place to live

• Use everything in the community, like transport, buildings and information

We work to make sure that everyone in the world is treated fairly and gets their human rights.

This report is about bad things that the leaders of China are doing about human rights in the world. The leaders of China are causing big human rights problems for China and the world. The leaders may be worried about losing power and not being in charge of everything any more. They are working hard to stop this from happening.

What are the leaders of China doing?

Stopping people talking about problems in China The leaders of China are trying to stop anyone disagreeing with them. For example, the leaders of China have tried to:

• Stop people in China finding out

what other countries say about problems in China

• Stop people getting together and talking about things that the leaders do not like For example, on [social media/the internet??] like Facebook and Twitter

• Stop other people in China making news stories about problems in China

The leaders of China have also tried to:

• Take action against other countries and groups that do not agree with the leaders of China

For example, the leaders may stop companies in China doing business with companies from other countries

• Get people from China who live in other countries to support the leaders of China and closely watch what people say about them

The problem is not just in China any more. It is now harder for people to say what they think about problems in China in other parts of the world. For example, in companies and colleges in the world.

Treating Muslim people very badly The leaders of China are trying to stop many Muslim people in China from:

• Following their religion and way of life • Having their own ideas about the world Closely watching Muslim people People who work for the leaders of China are closely watching many Muslim people. They go to the homes of some Muslim people and stay there to check what they are doing. For example, they check that Muslim people do not: • Pray and follow their religion

• Have ideas that are different from the

leaders of China

Using cameras, phones and other technology to find Muslim people The leaders of China are using things like: • Video cameras that can look at

people’s faces to find out who they are • Apps on mobile phones The leaders are using these things to: • Closely watch people and keep

information about them • Try to change the ideas of Muslim

people and their way of life Keeping Muslim people locked up The leaders of China are keeping many Muslim people locked up in camps that are like prisons. But these people have not done anything wrong. The leaders of China say this is to help Muslim people and teach them new things about China.

Muslim people can only leave the camps if: • They speak the main language in

China, not their own language. • They do not follow their religion

anymore • They agree with the leaders of China Closely watching how people in China behave The leaders of China are starting a new way to closely watch people in China to see how they behave. The leaders will keep information about everyone in one place. For example, information about things that people may do wrong, like: • Bad driving • Crossing the road at the wrong time • Smoking in the wrong places

People could lose some rights if they do things like this. For example, they may not be allowed to travel on some trains and planes.

Stopping human rights work in the world The leaders of China want to stop countries doing something about human rights problems in China and the world. There is a group where countries work together to make the world safer. The group is called the United Nations. The leaders of China have tried to stop the United Nations working on big human rights problems in the world. For example, problems in Syria, Yemen, Myanmar and Venezuela.

The leaders of China have also tried to stop work on human rights problems in China. For example, the leaders have tried to:

• Stop people learning about what is happening in China or talking about it

• Give people wrong information about

what they are doing • Get other countries to say good things

about China

Countries should care about the bad things the leaders of China do. But many countries do not try to stop the leaders of China doing bad things to people.

For example, the leader of France went to visit China but did not talk in public about human rights. Many countries find it hard to talk about problems in China. There may be many reasons for this. For example: • China has a lot of money and power

in the world • Other countries may need money,

business or help from China • The leaders of China try to stop

• Some leaders in the world are also

doing bad things for people’s rights Or they are not speaking about human rights any more
