WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • Rope (at least 6 feet in length) • Frisbee • Tape measure • Sidewalk chalk • Stopwatch • Dowel rod • Ribbon • Glue HOW TO DO IT: 1. Gather some friends and host your very own Backyard Summer Games! There are so many events to choose from – here are some ideas to get you started! 2. Tug of War! Did you know that Tug of War was a Summer Games event from 1900-1920? Grab the rope and mark the center using sidewalk chalk (or draw a line on the ground.) Divide your friends evenly and see who gets the Gold! 3. Discus Throw! Using a Frisbee, you can recreate the discus throw, an iconic track and field event. See how far you can toss this modern discus! For this event, you can measure each toss with the tape measure, or mark distances with sidewalk chalk beforehand. 4. 30 Meter Dash! The 100 meter dash is one of the most popular Summer Games events! The winner is often named the “fastest person in the world”! Try out a shorter version of this event by measuring out 30 meters (about 100 feet), and a starting and finish line, using a tape measure. Have a friend use the stopwatch to time the event and find out who is the fastest! 5. Rhythmic Gymnastics! Gymnastics have been in every Summer Games since the modern Summer Games in 1896! Rhythmic gymnastics became a part of the Summer Games in 1984, and this includes an event using a length of ribbon that must be kept in motion during a routine. Make your own rhythmic gymnastics ribbon by attaching a 6’ length of ribbon to a dowel rod.
